We explore the story of the good kings of Judah and the eventual downfall of Jerusalem. It explores King Hezekiah's reign during the Assyrian conquest, his prayerful plea for deliverance, and God's miraculous intervention. The narrative continues through the rule of Manasseh and his encouragement of idolatry, leading the prophets to announce doom for Judah. Despite a brief revival under King Josiah, the tragic fall of Jerusalem to Babylon occurs in 586 BC.

We dive into the intriguing question of where Jesus is in the biblical story so far. While Jesus may not be explicitly named, we explore how he is described and the context surrounding his coming. Through promises, such as defeating evil, blessing nations, and ruling in an everlasting kingdom, the Bible builds anticipation for the arrival of the promised Seed. We uncover the significance of various pictures in the story, such as the Passover Lamb, the Tabernacle, and the Temple which provide further understanding of the Seed's purpose. In this session, we dive into the story of Solomon and the construction of the Temple. Solomon, the son of David, becomes known for his wisdom and skillful leadership as the king of Israel. Solomon builds the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem, the place where God's presence dwells among His people. As we explore the significance of the Temple, we reflect on the sacrificial system and the need for a permanent substitute to cover sins. Later, Solomon's disobedience, particularly in taking many wives, leads to his downfall and God's anger. We witness the consequences of Solomon's sin and how it ultimately results in the future division of the kingdom.

David rises. In this lesson, we explore the rise of David, from his defeating the giant Goliath to his eventual reign as king of Israel. We witness David's unwavering trust in God's power and his numerous military victories. Not only that, but we see David’s God-honoring heart, desiring to build a temple for God’s presence. God responds with promises in the Davidic Covenant. Later, however, as David's successes grow, so does his pride, leading him to commit grave sins of coveting, adultery, and murder. Confronted by the prophet Nathan, David humbly confesses his sins and seeks God's mercy and forgiveness.

We explore the transition from the era of the judges to the era of the kings in Israel. We witness the rejection of God's direct rule by the Israelites, who demand a human king like other nations. Samuel, the last judge, anoints Saul as the first king of Israel. However, Saul's reign takes a turn when he disobeys God's command regarding sacrifices, leading to the announcement that the kingdom will be taken away from him and given to a king after God's heart. Despite the mistakes made by the people and their chosen king, God's mercy and grace endure as He continues to extend opportunities for repentance and redemption.
