We have been looking at this section in Jeremiah’s prophecy in which we see the Lord teaching how to have a heart for God. As we come to Jeremiah 25 we are coming to a chapter that most people are not going to be happy reading. We live in a time in our society where our culture does not like the idea of consequences for actions or experiencing judgment. In fact, we so bristle at the idea that modern Christian teaching tries to press that there is no such thing as the wrath of God. They do not believe God could be angry and have a problem with any such assertion. We want a God who is supportive and approves of everything that we do. We do not want to talk about wrath or judgment. So I say these things because Jeremiah 25 could be a jarring chapter to read. But wrath has an important place in God’s revealed character. Romans 1:16-17 is the thesis for this letter. Paul is not ashamed of the gospel because the gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes. But then Paul continues by saying that in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith. Romans 1:17 has so much written about it as people try to understand what Paul is teaching. What is the righteousness of God? What does it mean that the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith? What does it mean that the righteous live by faith? How does this all work together for our faith? I want to begin the lesson by hearing a promise that God makes:

I will give them a heart to know that I am the LORD, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart. (Jeremiah 24:7 ESV)

God says that he is going to give his people a heart to know him because they are going to return to him with their whole heart so that they will be in relationship. They will be the people who belongs to the Lord and the Lord will be their God. Now this is quite an amazing promise considering what we have been reading about concerning the people. We have read that the people do not have a heart for the truth. They just want to follow their own stubborn hearts. So what is God going to do so that his people will have heart to know him and return to him? “For I am not ashamed of the gospel…” (Romans 1:16). It is a bold statement that I want us to think about as we begin this lesson. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel. Do you feel ashamed of the gospel? We do not want to be ashamed but we can certainly be tempted to be ashamed. I believe everyone would readily admit that we need to have more boldness. As bold as we might be with the gospel, all of us want to have a greater courage regarding the gospel. I want us to think about Paul saying that he was not ashamed of the gospel. This was a man who had been severely mistreated because of the gospel. Paul was imprisoned because of the gospel. He experienced beatings for the gospel. He was often near death for the gospel. Five times he was scourged with 39 lashes because of the gospel. Paul was beaten with rods three times for the gospel. Paul experiencing stoning for the gospel. Three times he was shipwrecked for the gospel. He experienced hunger, thirst, and sleepless nights for the gospel. Paul was in constant danger from people and from nature due to the gospel (cf. 2 Corinthians 11:23-29). How was Paul not ashamed of the gospel even with all he experienced? Notice that is how the apostle framed this when he wrote to Timothy…

Our culture has coined a phrase that we consider to be new. People will speak about “my truth.” I expect that you have heard this phrase used before. In fact, we are encouraged to speak “our truth.” You are told that you need to speak “your truth.” The idea is that there is something that can be true for me that is not true for you. But this is not a new idea as much as we might fancy that we have made a breakthrough about truth. The prophet Jeremiah was also dealing with people who were making claims about truth that were contrary to Jeremiah’s truth claims. What God is going to do through the prophet Jeremiah is to help them know how to seek the truth and to build a desire for the truth in the hearts of his people so that they will seek him. Now, before we can move into the text, I want to remind us of the context. The beginning of Jeremiah 23 revealed that God himself would rescue his people by sending the righteous Branch. He will do justice and righteous. He will save his people and he will be called, “The Lord is our Righteousness.” So after talking about God himself will rescue his people, he immediately starts talking about having a heart for truth. Listen to what Paul says: “I am a debtor…” (Romans 1:14). We do not want to be debtors. We do not want to have obligations. We try to free ourselves from every debt. But this is a good debt. Paul embraces the fact that he is debtor and it is understand the debt of the gospel that has changed his life purpose.

After opening his letter to the Roman Christians by proclaiming a summary message of the gospel, the apostle Paul turns his attention to being thankful. Paul says that he is thankful to God for these Christians because their faith is being proclaimed all over the world. Paul says that he has been praying for these Christians in all his prayers. One of the things that Paul is praying for is the ability to go to Rome to see these Christians…

There are many New Testament scriptures that speak about the glory of God as seen through the amazing work of our Lord Christ Jesus. But we can miss the depth of what those images and teachings are giving because we do not know intimately what the prophets were proclaiming. Often the New Testament assumes we know those prophetic pictures so that we are ready to cry out to our God when we see their fulfillment in Christ. God is giving us these pictures so that we would see the multifaceted work of the Savior. Jeremiah is going to proclaim another name for the Savior so that we would see who he is and what he came into the world to do for his people. I want to begin the lesson today by asking an important question. What is the gospel? If someone were to come up to you, could you answer this question? If your neighbor asked you, “What is the gospel?”, what would you tell them? What exactly is the gospel? Now if you have grown up in the pews, you might quickly answer that the gospel is good news. This is what the word “gospel” means. But I want us to think deeper than this. Do not merely provide a definition of the gospel, that is, being good news. What exactly is the good news? What is the good news you have received? What is the good news you proclaim? What is the good news that you put your hope in? What is the good news that you have placed your faith upon? What are the contents of the good news? The book of Romans can seem complicated to the point that we can avoid reading it. But the book of Romans was not written to theologians. The book of Romans was written to everyday people like us. We should understand the gospel and not make the book of Romans so hard that we feel lost by it. So open your copies of God’s word to the book of Romans and we are going to be learning about the glorious gospel from this book…

We are in a section in the prophecy of Jeremiah where we are learning about having a heart for God. In Jeremiah 20 we saw the terrible treatment of God’s prophet. Jeremiah is mocked, scorned, and verbally abused. His close friends seek revenge on Jeremiah because of his teachings. Jeremiah was arrested, beaten, and put in prison for proclaiming God’s coming judgments. Yet in the face of his deep discouragement, Jeremiah has a fire in his bones that compelled him to continue to work as God’s prophet. The word of God was a fire in his bones that he could not shut even if he tried. But for more than a decade, Jeremiah has been preaching to the people only to receive rejection and scorn as their response. In fact, it is possible that at this point Jeremiah had been preaching God’s word to the nation for about 40 years. For decades no one has listened to Jeremiah…

We are looking at how to fight against the temptations that our enemy, the devil, is using to attack our faith. Our enemy wants us to doubt God, doubt God’s love, doubt our relationship with God, and doubt that God cares for us. There are many, many doubts that the devil launches at us so that we will question God, weaken our faith, and ultimately destroy our souls. I want to remind us the promise that God has given to us regarding our temptations.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)
