Today we see several examples of the importance of human agency and human action in the fulfillment of God's plans. God is calling us – at all times – to act in doing the work of the Lord.

So much of today's readings relate to where America finds itself now. From Gideon telling his people to follow the Lord, not a man, to Isaiah's powerful prophesies that at the very least we in America and around the world can relate to in the face of the rise of global communism, to Paul's final instructions to be watchful and act like men, we can find encouragement and God's leadership in these readings.

Please help share God's Word and share this podcast. Our greatest need today is for Biblically reformed revival. This revival must begin with a careful and thoughtful meditation on the Bible and faithful and humble doctrine.

Today's episode feels like a miracle to me.

If you have doubts, if you wrestle with faith, this episode should be a great encouragement. God gives us the example of Jacob and Rachel, sinners that they are, and Gideon, who openly expresses his weaknesses, fears, and doubts. And He demonstrates His tender patience with us by giving Gideon so much evidence that there is no longer room for doubt.

In Job, we're given a great example of humble willingness to be judged and in Isaiah we're given a clear command to trust only in the Lord. And Paul ties up our whole lesson in such a wonderful bow in 1 Corinthians 15. It's like Paul was expositing the rest of our readings for us.

Can God actually use me? We see Gideon ask God this question. Why would God choose Gideon, the weakest of his family, which is the weakest of Menassah, which is a half-tribe, the weakest of Israel? In Job we see perhaps some of the answer to this question.

God gives us a deeply satisfying buffet today with many different flavors to taste from. From Jesus confronting the Pharisees in Mark 2 to Jacob's envious and bickering wives and deceitful father in law in Genesis 30 to the opening act of the story of Gideon in Judges 6 to the abject suffering and loneliness of Job in Job 30 we are given a huge spectrum of life circumstances we can all relate to. And then we end with 1 Corinthians 14, advice to the local church on how to organize and run our local church services.

Is it through the local church that God wants to work in our lives? In part, yes, absolutely.

All of our passages point to one crucial gift we all lack to varying degrees: Wisdom. What is Wisdom, where does it come from, and how can we get more of it? Job spells it out very clearly for us. 

God is so incredibly good, and He offers us access to the wisdom He used to create all of existence. Amazing.

After reading about Jesus crucifixion and death, we see how Jacob puts on the clothing and appearance of Esau to receive his father's blessing. How similar is this to us putting on Jesus' righteousness! We read about Job holding fast to his righteousness and we wonder if that isn't God's righteousness he is holding fast to, not his own. Can we, like Job, rest completely assured in the righteousness God offers us? This question and many more are considered in this wonderful episode.

When Jesus told Peter in Matthew 26 that he would deny Jesus three times, Peter was in complete denial. In Judges 2 we see the outcome of Israel's promise in Joshua 24 to worship only the Lord. The moral: God knows we have a radically inflated view of our own faithfulness.

Today we see clear and corroborating end times prophesy from Jesus and Isaiah. Underlying this is the theme throughout our passages that began at the end of Matthew 23: are we willing to follow Jesus? Do we really love Him? Can we love and praise Him even as the whole world is falling apart? Let's meditate on these questions sincerely and with open and broken hearts.

Today Jesus weaves a strong warning of woe against the pharisees. Are we like the pharisees? He tells them that they clean the outside of their cups – the part people see – but the inside is filthy. How does the inside of our heart, our secret inner parts, look to God?

We then turn to Genesis, where Abraham is called a prince of God. Can God make us princes and princesses also? Then Joshua gives us a warning that is very applicable to us in our times today. Job cries out to find and voice his complaint to God Himself, knowing full well that it would be completely terrifying to do so. Isaiah gives a strong warning and prophesy on Tyre and Sidon because of their arrogant pride. What does this have to do with us today?

And we land on 1 Corinthians 7, a very deep treatise on marriage. Whether you are single or married or somewhere in between, God has something here for you.
