Twinkle's boring life on N. Dakota prairie is offset by her magical dreams
    L. Frank Baum, using the name Laura Bancroft, wrote these six stories in 1905 as separate booklets which were later published together in 1911 as this book. The color illustrations are by Frank Lloyd Wright's younger sister Maginel Wright Enright.
In this collection of short stories Twinkle is a girl living on the North Dakota prairie whose magical adventures concerning the animals she meets there are brought on by her tendency towards narcolepsy and vivid dreaming. Baum uses the animals' behaviors to create amusing fables for his young readers.
Mr. Woodchuck - Twinkle's father decides to put a steel trap outside the entrance to a woodchuck's home because it is eating his clover. That afternoon Twinkle goes out to see if the woodchuck is caught.

    BEAUTIFUL ADAPTATION of THE WAVES
An enjoyable and quite outstanding adaptation of the Waves. A complex piece typically Virginia Woolf which makes this a real treat to have in my collection. Very well thought out and beautifully acted by a strong cast. I enjoyed the book and now can enjoy listening to this extraordinary piece of Woolf literature as though it were a film acted out before my very eyes. I wish many more of Virginia Woolfs material was dramatised, as she has a beautiful way with words which in the right hands can be brought alive in so many ways.
    Very strange ,
At first, very strange, then strangely wonderful, move on to the unabridged reading, and that is really grown up, she exposes her soul. If Juliet Stevenson was reading, it would be beyond perfect.

One of George Eliot's most intriguing works. During a period of illness, Latimer first discovers an unusual ability. He is able to read other peoples' minds and see visions of the future.
Rather than being a gift, this strange phenomenon increasingly becomes a curse. But the one thing that keeps him going is his love for Bertha who Latimer knows will one day marry him, and who is the one person whose thoughts remain a mystery to him.
But everything changes when Latimer finally does gain sporadic insight into Bertha's mind... and finds her thoughts are much more sinister than he had anticipated.

    This narrator--ugh!
I can't even say if the story was good because the narrator was so annoying. She was like a British Valley Girl? At the end of every sentenceeeee, or pauuuuuse, she would drag out the last syllabllllllle?
Why did they choose a female narrator anyway? The book is written entirely in the voice of the male protagonist. Who cares that Eliot is female if her subject is male. Oh, l mean "maaaaaale?"
I found words like brothaaaaaa and othaaaaa to be especially annoying in this narration. I actually sped up the playback which put most of the narration at normal speed but the extended endings were still quite evident.
I got the story because I really enjoyed Middlemarch. In Middlemarch I found the main characters interesting, realistic and though they didn't make decisions I would make, their actions made sense for them. In this story I didn't sympathize or even understand any of the people. Too bad. Maybe with a different narrataaaaa, I would have enjoyed it moooooore?
    bad
Would you try another book written by George Eliot or narrated by Cathy Dobson?
    nope not keen
What could George Eliot have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
i think it was the narration that ruined it for me.
Would you be willing to try another one of Cathy Dobsons performances?
    no
    Any additional comments?
    not happy with this purchase

    Brilliant, moving, and au current
    A Quest with Poe

Their relationship runs into trouble when he begins a romance with student Deirdre Swann, so Catherine turns her attention to the reclusive anthropologist Alaric Lydgate, who has a fondness for wearing African masks.
Added to this love triangle are the activities of Deirdre's fellow students and their attempts to win the competition for a research grant. The course of true love - or academia - never did run smooth.

"A modern Jane Austen." (Alexander McCall Smith)
    Members Reviews:
A delightful 'old fashioned' novel , entertaining but providing food for thought.
The author has great skill in describing situations, characters, appearance in a way that brings them to life. The book is full of wry humour and perceptive observation of a way of life and an ordering of society which is long gone, yet in a way seems bang up to date. It has the flavour of everyday life with added piquancy!
Comedy of Manners at its best
A gently witty and enjoyable story, beautifully read by the narrator. I love all Barbara Pym's novels, and this one is up there with the best. Loved it!

    Title: Mrs. Ames
    Author: E. F. Benson
    Narrator: Nathalie Boltt

Length: 9 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-02-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 25 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
    E. F. Benson, best known for his irresistible Mapp and Lucia novels set in the fictional town of Tilling, England, was a prolific and beloved novelist. Though the Mapp and Lucia books remain popular to this day, this kindred book will be back in print for the first time since its initial publication.
The son of E. W. Benson, archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 to 1896, the young E. F. Benson was educated at Marlborough School and at King's College, Cambridge. After graduation he worked in Athens for the British School of Archaeology from 1892 to 1895, and later in Egypt for the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. In 1893 he published Dodo, a novel that attracted wide attention. It was followed by a number of other successful novels, including his hugely popular Mapp and Lucia series. In 1938 he was made an honorary fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. He died in February 1940.
    Critic Reviews:
"An extraordinary study in comedy and quite the best thing artistically that Mr. Benson has done." (New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
If you like the comedy of manners
Not for everyone, but if you like P.G. Wodehouse, period pieces, low key but sharp humor, give this a try. The performance is excellent.
Jane Austin fans will love this
Would you consider the audio edition of Mrs. Ames to be better than the print version?
    I prefer audio.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mrs Ames was intriguing because she was the opinion leader yet not the prettiest nor the richest woman in town. She obviously had charisma, dared to be different and to bring new interest to the village. People wanted to see what she does next. Her lack of interest in gossip and the fact that she was impervious to nasty criticsm made her a bit of a heroin to me.
What does Nathalie Boltt bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I knew who each character was and she doesn't speed through the story needlessly as some readers will do.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, but I was surprised at how she handled the situation with her husband when she became the effect of one of her social experiments.
    Any additional comments?
There was some complexity to the characters and especially Mrs Ames when she dares to stand up for women's rights at one point. I liked the twist that she suffered from one of her own creations and I especially loved how she handled it. She definitely knew who she was and didn't rely on good looks or riches to maintain her status.
    Almost Unlistenable
A truly abysmal narration. Is the narrator American, trying to sound British, or British, trying to sound American? Either way, it's like nails on a blackboard. Add to that some dreadful mispronunciations - coti-yon instead of cotillion, clar-ay instead of claret - and the book is ruined.
Love EF Benson but not the performance
I had not come across this particular EF Benson previously so was really looking forwards to it as a special treat, it feels slightly as though it was the blue print for Dodo and Mapp & Lucia, but I was happy to accept that and go with it. However I found the narrators telling quite odd, with awful voices for characters, quite often using the same voice for different characters so I did end up getting a bit muddled at times, quite distracting and disappointing.
