Edgar Allan Poe, considered the greatest of all writers of macabre stories, was born in Boston, Massachesetts, in 1809. His father, an Irish-American actor, died the following year and his mother, an English actress, the year after, in Richmond, Virginia. John Allan, a wealthy Richmond merchant, adopted him. When he was 7, the Allans moved to England, sending him to school at Stoke Newington. He wanted to become a writer, but John Allan wanted him to become a lawyer. He failed to finish courses at the University of Virginia and at West Point Military Academy, and John Allan disowned him.
Struggling to live by his writing, he became an ill-paid magazine writer, and at 26 married Virginia, his cousin, then aged 14. They were happy together, and while married he wrote much of his best work. But Virginia contracted tuberculosis, and worry over her illness and their poverty led him to drink heavily. After six years of marriage, she died. Suffering a complete breakdown, he was nursed back to health by Virginia's mother.
Returning to Richmond, he made a determined attempt to give up drinking. In 1849 he got engaged to a Richmond woman he had loved in his youth. Travelling north to collect his aunt for the wedding, he stopped off in Baltimore, Ohio. Found there lying drunk on the pavement, he was taken to hospital but died a few hours later.
His poems and short stories have influenced scores of writers. He invented the modern detective story, and his tales of terror are as chilling and powerful today as they have ever been. The stories in this volume are "The Tell-Tale Heart", "Hop Frog", and "The Premature Burial".

    I wanted to love this
But I couldn't honestly get through it. The stories were ones I was already familiar with, having read when I was younger, and the narrators brought nothing to this interpretation that reading the short stories, yourself, wouldn't bring. If you want a refresher on the tales, or want your children exposed to Kipling, and do not want to read the stories to them, yourself, this is a good choice.
    Enjoyable spooky listen
These are gentle but well written tales set mainly in India. Great stories which are not gory but spine chilling none the less. Really well read and reader matches the timbre of stories perfectly.

    A wonderful little Hardy gem...
in the Gothic style, something of a departure for him, but this story is wonderfully engaging and bizarre, worthy of Hawthorne or even Poe.

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-10-12
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Written by the author of the ever-popular Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as Charlotte Brontës finest work. The story follows the fortunes of a young teacher at a girls school in the French town of Villette and is superbly told by Mandy Weston. It is an adventure story, a romance, and a French lesson all in one! The much-praised unabridged recording returns here in a more accessible abridged format.
    Editorial Reviews:
Narrator Mandy Weston is extraordinary in her portrayal of Lucy Snowe. She provides an authentic depiction of Lucy's loneliness and despair at the loss of her three siblings. Weston's powerful characterization is especially believable as Lucy faces the challenges of moving to Villette, France, to begin a new life as a teacher at an all-girls boarding school despite not speaking a word of French. Listeners share Lucy's struggles as Weston captures Lucy's powerful emotions in her search for love, particularly her relationship with an important person from her childhood who turns up again. Weston's effortless narration, especially her subtle French and English accents, makes this production a classic to be savored.

of course some passages of brilliant writing but
I found this novel overly long, and the story-line is subjected to a profusion of unrealistic improbabilities. There are, of course some passages of brilliant writing but, on the whole, I enjoyed "Jane Eyre" more, in spite of the critics' consensus that "Villette" is the superior novel.
Wonderful book but ending left to the imagination
I truly enjoyed this book...the writing style, the personalities, the mysticism that really wasn't.... The only thing it missed was the laying out of the denouement. It was left to the readers' imagination, which, while it might be enjoyable for some, left me unsatisfied.
I love this edition so much I bought several other books ...
I love this edition so much I bought several other books with this binding. The only problem is my cat also liked the binding and the little string to mark the page and within two days had chewed the corner off the book.
    Wonderful read
This work is perhaps one of the finest written in English literature, the author not only gives us a superior story but her knowledge of the language and vocabulary are indeed extensive. Her characters are so well written and described they come to life from the pages in the book. I was slowly drawn into the story and it held my interest right through to the final thought. Not a quick read by any means but much pleasure is derived from reading slowly and thoughtfully. Much of the discourse between the characters is spoken in French, which I am sadly ignorant of, but I was still able to follow the work none the less and by way of âhintsâ and reference could understand their meaning.
    Wonderful!
Wonderful Read. I especially got excited when my favorite reader, Davina Porter read this special book. She always makes a good book even more so.
Villette is right up there with the best of Charlotte Bronte's books. I don't "tell the story" in my reviews but only my opinion of it. Not a happily after book but an inspiring story of a sensible, practical, and kind woman. Her opinions and thoughts tell her story and struggles to independence. Some strange occurances are solved with humor adding to it at the end. I enjoyed it immensely.

    Definitely worth it
Lovely dramatisation. I couldn't stop listening. If you like radio 'plays' you will find nothing to dislike. Not too complicated to follow, simple story and Dickens story excellent.
    dickens at his best
so enjoyable. twists & turns. sad & happy. characters you love or hate.great great book.
    Do bey and son
Obviously this is a good story as it is written by Charles Dickens. The dramatisation is very good and the way it is divided up is helpful, this is presumably because it was abridged for Woman's Hour.

Many critics consider this the best Henry James novelette, surpassing even The Turn of the Screw. Like that story, it has an ending that you will remember for a long time. The story concerns two young men visting the United States from London. They meet a pair of charming women who return the visit the following year in London. Romantic intrigues, miscommunication and cultural gaffs are plentiful in this short but delightful novel.

I read the free Kindle version. I enjoyed this short book, approximately 100 pages. I suppose the moral of the story is that expectations can influence outcomes.

    Title: Under the Man-Fig
    Author: Mollie Evelyn Moore Davis
    Narrator: Sally Darling
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-11
    Publisher: Recorded Books
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
A classic work of Texas fiction from popular poet and historian M.E.M. Davis, Under the Man-Fig was first published in1895. Part romance, part satire, and part realism, this entertaining novel takes place in the fictional town of Thornham on the Texas Gulf Coast. Under the sprawling branches of the ancient man-fig tree in the town square, all the male gossips of Thornham sit around and spin their colorful yarns - and in so doing, unwittingly weave a folk history of the Old South. This important work resounds with a reading from narrator Sally Darling.
    Members Reviews:
Staring up through the branches, waiting for figs to drop
Stop long enough to notice the clump of old men standing under the shade trees on the courthouse lawn. And listen. Or if they go silent when you approach, notice the murmur that resumes when you're out of earshot. In Thornham, Texas, those up-in-years menfolk standing under that big, old fig tree are the town gossips, and they're ready to pass judgment on anyone in their ken, based on hear-say or outright prevarications. Once the word is out, woe be unto the targets of their barbs of scorn. If you are a sucker for Texana and a good yarn, you won't be disappointed in "Under the Man Fig." Fans of Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers and Bulwer-Lytton may recognize the meter, dialect and shrouded tone. If you're offended by outdated/unkind/never-appropriate words referring to African-Americans, you'll find plenty to fault in this 1890s novel. But readers who are able to set revisionism aside and accept this work for something true to its era (although over-romanticized here and there) will find much to appreciate. Make sure to absorb the afterword by Sylvia Ann Grider, but I suggest reading it before jumping into the text. It has a whetting effect that makes the book even more enjoyable.
