I never want this to happen to me, but I sure love reading it

A good read is about vicarious experience: let me do something in my head that I can't do in real life.

"Under Low Skies" pulls that off nicely.

Interesting people fighting tough situations looking for answers. Brotherly love, along with all the other stuff brothers do to each other. High stakes and plenty of action without turning into an endless chase scene.

A large cast can get confusing, but Teja makes sure we know who everyone is and what they're doing â and eventually, at the right time, why they're doing it. He manages main characters and secondaries well; I found them all believable (in the context of imaginary-novel-land, not the real world) and enjoyed the ride.

There was room for more of the beautiful scenery and more nautical lore (I'm a sailor, I can't help myself) but the lack doesn't hurt the story. I'm partial to less strong language than the characters use, and there are a couple scenes of intimacy I could have lived without, but in context, they're believable and probably won't offend most people. Yeah, I'm a sailor who doesn't like swearing or reading about sex.

Well done, Ed. I'm off to find the rest of the Martin Billings books.

Locked Up Abroad

One of the scariest things an American can think of is being locked up in another country.

This book is a classic example of "what can go wrong, will go wrong".

The characters and the storyline draw you in from the very beginning and it is almost impossible to put it down until the end. Definitely keeps you in suspense and guessing about who is the one behind all the madness until the very end.

I have a *book hangover* now that it's over.

Fun to Read But Not Very Realistic

Under Low Skies has a good story line, but you must filter it through a scruffy, 40-year-old bachelor narrator who, for some reason, women can't resist. The settings are fantastic: Trinidad and the Northeast coast of Venezuela. Be forewarned: it's the good guys verses the bad guys, very little complexity. Still, I found myself looking forward to reading it, and finished it quickly.

I loved the book, written by a true traveler gives it great realism.

A murder mystery taking place in Venezuela, Under Low Skies was a good read. The author did an excellent job of delving into the setting, bringing the readers to the waters of Venezuela. A nice read, and I rate it four stars.

If you want to read a book that goes from one rape and murder to the next with nearly nothing in between, you might like this book. Honestly I think its some sort of twisted sick genre type book.

John Corrigan Just Gets Better and Better

In golf another term for a "bad lie" is "rub of the green." I am not sure of it's derivation although I am pretty sure it's an old Scottish expression meaning "you figure your way out of this on your own - you get no help."

That is pretty much what is facing PGA Tour Pro Jack Austin as he undertakes to fulfill a promise to his surrogate son, Nash Henley to help him find his biological father.

That doesn't sound like an undertaking that would be fraught with danger and even death, but as it turns out, it is all that and more.

One of the things I like about this series is that while Jack Austin is a PGA Tour golfer, that fact does not dominate the story, but is very nicely woven into it's fabric with much factual information as well as vignettes which have a ring of authenticity to them.

That Jack Austin has managed to have a career that has now lasted several years on the PGA Tour is in itself remarkable given the outside distractions he has had to endure. However, Corrigan makes it all plausable.

A note on the book jacket compares the author favorably to Robert B. Parker and Dick Francis. He is a much better writer than Parker, but as I have thought about it, the allusion to Francis works for me. John Corrigan's books about Jack Austin are as much about golf as Francis's were about horse racing. They both have interesting characters, pay attention to the details of the sport that they use for a background and spin stories that keep you turning the pages.

I see no point in outlining the plot. What you really need to know is that if you like a nice mystery, enjoy good writing and every so often tee it up you will most likely find this author well worth your time. Teeing it up isn't required, however. I never rode a race horse, but I read all of Francis's novels. I have read all of John Corrigan's also. I hope he has as long a run.

I enjoy golf associated books

I enjoy golf associated books. But this series casts the golf pro as a cross between Rambo, Houdini and Sherlock Holmes. In two books he has escaped kidnapping by Mafia types twice, killed five bad guys and played tournament golf well without sleep and injured. Enough is too much!

Golf fiction at its best

Some golf fiction books have very little golf weaved into the story or has too much golf and a thin story line. Bad Lie is the perfect balance of golf and story line. This book has me hungry to read more from the Jack Austin series.

So-so book

Not a bad read, but not a great one, either. Didn't make me want to read the other Jack Austin books. The author needs a good proofreader.

Almost a "10"

If the Inspector Hennessey novels are a "10", then this series with DCI Vickery is a "9".

Nothing except police procedural.

The title of this novel tells the reader that this will be a police procedural so I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was that it would be absolutely nothing but a police procedural. Minimal description, clipped on-topic-only dialog, and a tiny amount of character revelation which more often left me more confused than informed is what I found here. If you want to be a fly on the wall to listen in while police have strategy sessions, attend postmortem examinations, and interview witnesses........well, this is definitely the book for you. Frankly, it was more bare-bones than any mystery novel I've ever read and not a favorite style for me, but I can understand how readers who want only to concentrate on the crime involved and the processes used to solve the crime would like it.

Detective Inspector Harry Vicary is the head of this team with four investigators in the Murder and Serious Crime Squad of New Scotland Yard. Members of the team are Frankie Brunnie, Tom Ainsclough, Penny Yewdall, and Victor Swanell. Also featured is John Shaftoe, the forensic pathologist. I think these characters were present in the previous three novels in this series since none of them was introduced as new to the team, but I've never read a novel by Peter Turnbull so I can't be sure of that. A milkman on the early morning portion of his route has found the body of a dead man lying in the street between parked cars in the suburb of Wimbledon. When Vicary and his team arrive to investigate they discover that a car, later found to have been stolen, was set ablaze a few streets away from this crime scene the previous night in this same section of Wimbledon. The investigation begins to identify the victim and determine the cause of death. Twenty-four hours later a second body and a second burned out vehicle are found in the exact same locations. Now police must work to try to find a link between these two victims and hope that link will lead to the killer.

As I've said, this novel was not a favorite of mine. I like to feel that I get to know the characters in a story and I got no personal involvement here at all. It was also clear very early on who the officers would be looking for so the only discovery for me as a reader was to see the past histories of all the victims, witnesses, and criminals uncovered and watch as the police gathered evidence to make arrests. There was this really annoying element of having snatches of dialog repeated two or three times during conversations which was quite irritating for me. Bare-bones, cut-to-the-chase, no time wasted on the feelings or personalities of the official investigation team; these all describe what I found in this novel.

Maybe with a better reader this book could have been saved. I couldn't get far enough into it to say what the editor could have done differently, maybe a match would have helped.

My last name ends in "ski" and I'm from western Pennsylvania so I thought this might be a fun book to listen too....wrong! The reader is awful, I'm sorry but she is. Her voice makes the main character sound like she is 90 yrs old. If you want entertainment start counting how many times you hear the names "Polish Lou" or "Polish Peg". I never thought I would ever return a book but this one is going back.

More like this please . . .

Tremendously elegant prose. The author conveys the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of contemporary Milan as a subtle tapestry serving to anchor the many characters, most but not all of them living, that constitute the Della Torre family of exorcists. Particularly impressive is how well Beyer captures each distinct voice - particularly that of the endearing protagonist, a young woman simultaneously wiser and more innocent than her sixteen years can explain. The book is excellent for teens and adults, and boys in particular should be encouraged to read it - as they will find not just a character they'd be lucky to meet, but will learn through her experience the kind of young men they should aspire to be.

wonderful novel

The second in the series, this book is as good as the first. The fact that I am not especially partial to the supernatural reminds me again that the genre is unimportant - it is the quality of the work that matters, whatever the subject. The sincerity and warmth of the author shines through every page, so that the world that she has conjured up has become one of my favorite places in fiction, one I am looking forward to revisit as soon as the third volume comes out. Highly recommended for lovers of well-told stories.

Great read for YA and adults!

I LOVE this series! The author, Kat Beyer, takes us into another world of demon catchers in Milan! Magical and very true to life emotions of a teenage girl.

Ingenious story

At the end of The Demon Catchers of Milan, Mia had decided to enter the family business of demon-catching. While she does miss her home, she is settling well into life in Milan and since she has her talisman, she no longer needs to be on house arrest or accompanied by a member of her family. She is now actively hunting down her demon, while also being intrigued by the fact that the demon bothered to cross an ocean to possess her.
