Another great Dan Shaw novel

Ron Faust has several Dan Shaw novels out, and the intricate plots, well developed characters, and excellent pace make these both fun and engrossing reads.

Dan Shaw is not where he thought he would be as the novel starts out. Readers of previous Shaw novels will know how he ended up in this situation. It's not terrible - it's just not what he wants. So he makes a bid to change his life, maybe get his head clear and figure out where to go from here. Events of the last novel left him with enough cash to sail off into the Caribbean and find a new path.

Finding a beautiful, female castaway in the middle of the sea starts Dan on another adventure toward ostensible redemption. What happens next is why I enjoy reading these novels - it's never what you think it will be, even if it starts out that way.

An excellent read for any setting, can be read standalone but recommend Dead Men Rise Up Never and Sea of Bones first to get a better background. If you like well-paced thrillers with unusual plots and unique characters, you won't be disappointed in any of them.

Not your usual fare

The things you expect to happen don't. Our heroes are seriously flawed. But you will be hooked. Good job.

exhilarating thriller

A skimpy plot buried in flowery language

There's no doubting the fact that Ron Faust can write; he has a descriptive, muscular prose that has caused more than one reviewer to compare his style to Hemingway. That being said, I'm sorry to admit that out of the 4 books I've read by him, I've only enjoyed one and it wasn't Sea of Bones. The book starts out with an unusual hook; the narrator has killed a man and buried the body in the ocean, and he watches with interest as several other characters attempt to find the body. As the story goes on, however, we find out that these events are part of a previous book involving the same characters and have nothing to do with this book or its plot. Instead, the plot of Sea of Bones involves a talented con-man who has ripped off several wealthy people for millions of dollars. The narrator and a small group of his friends plan an elaborate scheme to turn the tables on the con-man and rip him off instead. While the plot is somewhat interesting if not highly original, we don't get into the meat of the story until roughly 150 pages in. Instead, we are given lengthy details of dinner parties and other social functions along with pages and pages of clever dialogue and other padding which does nothing to advance the plot and instead bogs the book down so heavily that I found myself falling asleep after reading only 4 or 5 pages. While the ending of the book was somewhat exciting, slogging through 340 pages of fluff to get there was almost like torture. For a fast-paced, exciting and literary thriller, read When She Was Bad by the same author, and leave Sea of Bones on the shelf where it belongs.

strong susepnse thriller

Really enjoy this series

I've been warmer the next book. I hope a third comes out. This character is great.

Enjoyable, but a bit flat after the first in the series.

My second time with John Florio and his mixed race albino Jersey "Snowball" Leo. Sugar Pop Moon, Florio's fiction debut was a pretty amazing read back in 2013 and this one has sat on the pile for a year or two simmering. High expectations then.

Slightly unfulfilled unfortunately. I didn't enjoy it quite so much as the last one. It's a fairly short book - around 230 pages long, but it still felt kind of saggy around the middle.

Jersey's childhood friend, Aaron Garvey is on death row awaiting execution. Jersey gets the phone call he's been dreading; Garvey wants Leo to join him for his last meal, a request that our man can't turn down. Garvey later escapes and seeks Jersey's help in shelter and also trying to recover some seed money invested in a nightclub. Money he needs to flee the country and start up elsewhere. As a convicted cop-killer he won't find any rest in America.

Therein follows our tale...... corrupt cops - vicious to boot, a speakeasy, nightclubs, gangsters, police raids, harbouring a fugitive, missing money, a playground romance rekindled, racism, shootouts, confrontation and death, prostitutes, a boxing club precious to Jersey and his father Ernie, dreams of a new life, a showdown, more death and an outcome and resolution.

I liked the setting with the seedy atmosphere of illegal drinking clubs in 30s Philadelphia. (World's apart from a recent book I read set in 30s Texas.) I liked the main character Jersey and his relationship with his father and his loyalty to his friends and his dreams of escape with childhood sweetheart Myra. His constant striving to do the right thing and his permanent fretting over money and his responsibilities. He has a good heart. Some of the supporting characters also had some depth and decency - Leo's father Ernie and the cop Thorndyke.

I think I just couldn't really get into the story. There seemed to be a lot of chasing around and to me at least repetition. We seemed to replay the same events a few times. Cops hunt Garvey, Jersey being watched and worrying etc etc.

One to Read When You Need a Good Western Mystery

I will admit that I was drawn to the book because of the location. I will also admit that I began and set it aside twice before I actually became engaged in the story. The beginning was so much a parody of Montana law enforcement that I had a difficult time swallowing the descriptions, dialogue, etc. Not to mention that it is set in a fictitious setting which was somewhat unbelievable. However, once I was introduced to the main character and his partner who take over the case, I was hooked. Not because the story was so difficult to anticipate but because the personalities and conversation between the two was to amusing to stop reading. If you have run out of anything that appeals in your book stacks, this might be one that will keep you reading, if, like Robinson Crusoe, you can get past the boring beginning.

3.5 stars, edit/proof reading issues. Interesting story with a lead character with slightly different methods of being a "hero" in the justice system.

"Canât argue that,â Draper agreed.

I may re-read this story and look forward to other works by this author.

Fun story

This was an interesting story that kept my interest from start to finish. It is set in Montana, near where I grew up so that spiked my interest.

Dead and Deader

It's easy in today's society to become weary of evil prevailing

because the mechanisms of justice are lubricated with money and adjudicated through and "undue" process. "Big Sky Dead" with Charlie Draper is a refreshing "don't get out of jail free card" being distributed by a cross between Client Eastwood' s "Dirty Harry" and Charles Bronson's, "The Mechanic." Quick action, ruthless but justified dismissals, hairpin twist, and unexpected ending. Ignore the spelling errors and appreciate the story line! Draper is Dexter gone vacationing.

Needs some serious editing

This has potential to be a good read but needs serious editing. I wonder why so few readers mentioned that. Maybe I'm just picky but words are missing or duplicated in sentences making for difficult reading at times. It seems that the bad grammar gets worse the further on I get in the book which definitely interrupts the flow. That being said I'm just over halfway through. I hope the author gets a good editor so that his full potential as a writer can be realized.

I have read all her books and love them. I wish she could write them faster.

Not bad

Biddle does a good job of recreating Philadelphia, and there was certainly a good mystery at play. However it was tied up too quickly and neatly in the end.

Great follow-up in this series

This is a wonderfully written and meticulously researched novel. The third book in this series, and it more than lives up to the beauty and passion Biddle created with the first two Martha Beale novels. I recommend this highly to anyone who loves historical fiction and stylish writing.

Great mystery

THis was a mystery until the end. As usual her character development was terrific and the plot line so authentic I felt as if I were there.

Cordelia Biddle has done it again!

This third Martha Beale historical mystery, like the first two, draws us deeply into 19th-century Philadelphia, contrasting Martha's privileged world with that of the rest of 19th-century American society. In so doing, Biddle deftly tells us something about economic and class disparities in our own time as well. In this installment, Martha continues to develop as a character, displaying her humanity and innate sense of justice as well as her personal weaknesses and class blindness. As you are drawn more deeply into her world, and into the immediate and compelling mysteries that she is drawn to solve, you will find yourself quite unable to put the book down, and perhaps even, like me, talking to Martha, wanting to be by her side, giving her the friendship and support and guidance she so needs, for she was a motherless child and, as we learned in the first book, is now fatherless as well. You will love this remarkable young woman's spunk and fearlessness in the face of the ignorance and prejudice about the role of women in society which were the reality of her time and place. You will also love the vivid and immediate evocations of the streets of Philadelphia, from Society Hill to Southwark, Manayunk to Chestnut Hill. Great suspense and whodunit!

I love a good suspense/murder/mystery, and this book has all of the above! Really had fun getting to know each of the main characters, and the author did a great job of introducing them to us. Lots of fun and a fast read...I had trouble putting it down!

I had the privilege to read Bill Rockwell's book.

I enjoyed the book very much. The characters were interesting and well formed.. I would recomend this to anyone, especially those who like suspence novels.

I found this book to be a real page-turner. A really great mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat to the end.

I loved the character development in "Not Privileged to Know"

This was the 3rd book of Bill Rockwell's I have read. Each book has drawn me in to read another. I loved the character development in "Not Privileged to Know". I was drawn in to the twin characters and the detective character was a total surprise to me. I was half way through the book and ordered the next "Death of the Innocents". Mr. Rockwell's books are wonderful get away from it all reads.

Book is a page-turner! Reading from my rental at Hawks Nest Beach I couldn't put this book down. Lost my sailfish rudder pin so I picked up this book to keep busy until the wind kicked up again.
