Jack and his partner infiltrate a Chinese spy ring and neutralize them. I hope there will soon be more book from Don Easton.

GREAT BOOK

Don Easton has written a great detective series centered on Jack Taggart, a Canadian undercover officer. Taggart must solve crimes while navigating the seas between the law, the bureaucracy, and justice- which are often in conflict and even opposition to each other. It is these conflicts, as much as the crimes themselves, which form the heart of these novels.

Easton was himself a law enforcement officer in Canada for twenty years so his plots and characters are realistic and absorbing.

As a retired law enforcement officer myself, I can testify to the realism he brings to his books and the fine story telling of his writing. I purchased one book, knowing nothing about Easton or his work and quickly devoured it, buying several others. Having read all of them I believe you will be entirely satisfied with this novel and wanting more of Easton books when you have finished it.

Old-fashioned page turner!

If you are looking for a murder mystery with a bunch of weird, but very plausible twists, this is the book for you. The book opens with a very shocking murder in Jordan - Hare Stadium at the Iron Bowl, the annual Alabama - Auburn grid iron classic. The plot thickens to involve people on all levels of society, including very high officials in the SEC. I was happy to see that a some of my favorite characters from Woodfin's previous novel, "The Sickle's Compass: A Novel of Love, War, and Alzheimer's Disease," returned in this book.

I read the first couple of chapters, was interrupted and couldn't get back to the book until the next day. When I resumed reading, I stayed up until 2 a.m. the following night to finish, because I was physically incapable of putting the book down.

I give this book my highest recommendation and eagerly await the author's next novel.

Great read

This was an intreging read with lots of twists & turns in the plot as it developed the story line. I found it hard to put down at times. I'd highly recommend this book!

Highly recommended. This is the fourth book by Woodfin I have read and I was not disappointed. This one is firmly up to his usual high standard. Suspense, a multiplicity of well developed characters, nice settings, and a well-crafted plot. Get it. You won't be disappointed either.

Fast moving and action packed

What could be more fun than a murder in broad daylight in front of thousads of fans at the biggest football game of the year? Nothing. Except following a great cast of characters as they unravel the mystery ad solve the case. This is a fast paced page turner filled with memorable characters and great dialog. A fun read.

Another in the Sam Shepard series which has many twists. Plus she intertwines Sam's personal struggles as she tracks through normal people's challenges. I have brought the next in the series 'The Faceless' what is going to happen to Sam now?

Good easy read, clever plot and not too grim

Sam Shephard is growing on me - perhaps she is maturing, holding her tongue more. Enjoyed reading the Dunedin setting, Clever plot with unexpected twist, characters appropriate to the story. Enjoyable easy read

The best one yet in a cracking good series!

A leading light amongst the recent surge in quality Kiwi crime writing, Dunedin-based Vanda Symon was deservedly a finalist for the inaugural Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel in 2010, for her third Sam Shephard novel, CONTAINMENT. Over the course of the series Shephard has worked her way up from sole charge rural policewoman in a small farming community, to junior detective on the rise (well, maybe) in the 'big smoke' of Dunedin, an historic city in the south of New Zealand.

BOUND, the fourth in what has become an excellent series, sees Shephard return in a thrilling tale kick-started by a brutal home invasion. A shady businessman is shotgunned and his wife is left hospitalised after being tied to a chair, gagged, and left to watch his blood pool on the floor. When evidence starts pointing to a couple of high-profile lowlifes who are prime suspects in an earlier unsolved cop killing, many of Shephardâs Dunedin CID colleagues are ecstatic. But our sassy heroine is uneasy, and decides to investigate further - irritating and frustrating her colleagues - while at the same time juggling plenty of professional and personal conundrums; a dying father, ongoing family issues, and the stresses of a workplace relationship.

Symon also has a nice touch for the southern scenery of Dunedin and its surrounds, a real feel for the city and the people, personalities, and places there, from the youthful exuberance of the transient student population, to the historic buildings, to the natural environment, and much more.

With BOUND, Symon takes an already-great series to another level, bringing everything together superbly with real verve and personality. Shephard has become one of the better heroines in contemporary crime fiction, anywhere. A protagonist that is energetic and intriguing, with plenty of layers and personality. She's very much her own woman, and a real 'Kiwi lass' at that. Symon has a really good touch for the spiralling interpersonal relationships of her characters, the everyday, very human fears and foibles that all of us can face as we make our way through the world, regardless of whether we fight crime or not.

Great work

Sam Shepherd and her friend Maggie are living with Maggie's Aunt and Uncle. After a uni student is found dead in the river Sam wants to investigate, but her lowly status at Dunedin CIB leave her in charge of menial tasks instead. However, Sam is still the one to uncover the deeper connections involved int he case.

As before Sam's headstrong attitude and disobedience both put her at odds with everyone she's trying to help and also put her in danger. Without them though she wouldn't be able to follow the leads and clues that she puts together even though her working life seems more of an obstruction than a help.

I am really growing to like Sam's character in this series. An excellent follow-up to Overkill, and I look forward to reading more of Vanda Symon.

In the mind of Sam Shepherd capable likeable young detective - headstrong and irreverent. Enjoyed the setting of familiar Dunedin. Only gave it a 3 as the denouement was a bit weak. Good simple book if need diversion.

Love Vanda's writing as it is local but really interesting. Easy to read but with unexpected twists.

A terrific book that leaves you wanting more of the main character

Dunedin writer Vanda Symonâs follow-up to her excellent debut Overkill (Penguin, 2007) finds heroine Sam Shepherd having moved to Dunedin from Mataura; bridges burnt. Undertaking detective training, Shepherdâs on the bottom rung of the ladder, battling her grudge-holding boss for any involvement.

The Ringmaster opens with a murder in the Botanic Gardens, before switching to stroppy Samâs first-person narration. Marginalised, she struggles to participate in the investigation, working in her own time and feeding off the scraps her partner Smithy smuggles her way. She eventually uncovers a link between the visiting circus, and a series of deaths throughout the lower South Island.

Of the many admirable aspects of Symonâs storytelling, chief is her creation of Sam Shepherd, a protagonist you want to follow; headstrong, passionate, and flawed. A talented detective, but not infallible. Shepherd puts herself out there, cares, makes mistakes, and has real emotions; fear, jealousy, anger, sadness. Sheâs human, real, and well-rounded.

Symon shows a talent for creating rounded characters throughout, from Shepherdâs friend Maggie, the âvoice of reasonâ, to nemesis characters such as DI Johns and circus owner Terry Bennett. Symon ensures that even the antagonists ring true; they have good points as well as bad, and have understandable motives for their objectionable behaviour.

Another impressive facet is her use of the Dunedin setting. From the opening murder beside the Leith, to Highlanders games, and student life, Symon brings alive this southern city.
