Publisher's Summary:
An inheritance at risk and the discovery of an extraordinary cache of old wines during Nashville's history-making flood leads to foul play and death in this Mark Rollins mystery adventure.
The old man finished a glass of wine-his favorite claret-went to bed, and died. Now more than fifty years later, a stunningly beautiful Nashville attorney, Ann Sims, is preparing to auction off his estate-a derelict old mansion with its long-forgotten secret.
Sims has lived with a secret of her own, a secret that could cost her the fortune she is in line to inherit and end her career. Beautiful women can make poor choices in men. She is no exception. Afraid, for good reason, of the possessive and greedy men in her life, she turns to Mark Rollins for protection.
Rollins, the central character in Collins' mysteries, is a modern-day hero-a protector, problem solver, and crime fighter. His superhero-like powers are technology, extraordinary wealth, and friends in high places. This time his technology is failing him as he tries to keep Ann Sims alive - his efforts thwarted by Nashville's failing infrastructure in the wake of the massive storm and flood that provides cover for bad things.
Members Reviews:
This is, at best, a very light beach read.
But frolicking in the ocean is probably a better use of your time! The plot is minimal, and the writing skill is very basic and, often, elementary-like. It can entertain for maybe 90 minutes. I'm from Nashville, so the setting gave it enough of an edge for me to keep reading and recognizing times and places. Without that, probably would not have finished. But if you're looking for something that requires no more involvement other than turning the page, this is it.
So Glad I Bought This Book
I saw something on the news about Tom Collins and how The Claret Murders included Nashville, Tennesseeรขs historic 2010 Flood in its plot. I couldnรขt resist buying the book. OMGรข so glad I did. Iรขve always heard that an author should write about what they know. Two things Tom Collins knows: wine and technology. I couldnรขt put the book down. Gobbled it up in two days. I know what Iรขm giving for Christmas.
"Tapestry-covered secret doors" in Nashville
Like Tom Collins's earlier mystery thrillers, The Claret Murders is set in the Nashville area which grounds the story in a place of familiarity and reality whether you are from here or not. In addition, Collins situates the action in the middle of the devastating May 2010 flood which affected people, homes, businesses, land, and livestock. Collins does not just tell a story -- he teaches. The reader learns about Nashville, wine, and from a business management perspective about law firms and lawyers. The characters, dialogue, and "whodunit" intrigue keep the story moving.
Collins's voice is consistent throughout, and his language is articulate and easy to understand; likewise, his narrative balances "showing" and "telling" giving just enough of each to draw the reader in and get the reader involved. The recurring characters, for those who have read the previous books, feel more like friends or colleagues not just characters in a story.
