    Excellent
I am really enjoying this authors books, love the characters and enjoy the stories. My only gripe in the relationship she has with TJ which gets a bit irritating.
Just when you think it's safe .....
Where does Screams in the Dark rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
The author is great but the narrator brings Rosie Gilmour and all the other characters to life. This rates in the top 10 authors. Read a lot of books so top ten is really good.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Screams in the Dark?
The endings are probably the best in the business. Leaves you wanting more.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Apart from Rosie, Adrian is a great character.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Makes me sad that there are people that can be like this in the world but the exceptionally great writing paints a Coulour picture on 3D in ones mind.
    Any additional comments?
Great series. Waiting to get my hands on the next one in the series.

    Terrific!
The story was filled with twists and turns that kept me unable to stop reading. The author has a way of keeping the reader guessing. A definite must read for mystery readers.
    A must read
The further I read the more sucked in I got. Got to the point I couldn't put the book down. Really enjoyed the characters and hope to see them again. Left great opportunities for sequels. I felt I was walking through the investigation with them. For the classic murder mystery reader, this is a must.

An Intelligent Thriller â A review of the novel âMardi Gras Madnessâ
âThe job of the artist is always to deepen the mysteryâ - Francis Bacon
In author Ken Maskâs latest novel, âMardi Gras Madnessâ, the recurring character of New Orleans' attorney turned private investigator Luke Jacobs from his previous books such as âA New Orleans Detective Mysteryâ, âThe French Quarterâ return to solve a new mystery in his favourite city. When Jake Matos is convicted of killing a police officer in the Louisiana state; New Orleans most favourite and feared private investigator Luke Jacobs must enter the scene to try and save his friend from a long and unjust prison term. But what Luke and his gang of detective crew stumbles upon on the way to solve the case is a deceitful tale of real estate fraud, misleading & malicious intent by a pharmaceutical corporation and also a cover up murder to boot. Luke soon realizes that the key to solving Jakeâs case lie in uncovering the truth behind all the mysterious dealings.
Ken Mask takes you on a virtual tour of the famed New Orleans city; he lets you visualize the architecture and the colourful culture contributed by the mixed races of people without all of it becoming too much of a hindrance to the actual story telling. Ken reveals his first hand, personal knowledge of New Orleans, also revealing its history, character and the dark underbelly that is a constant of any great city. And you will just love the pacing of the story, itâs like a written down version of a slick Hollywood production handled by an enigmatic director and editor combo. The way Ken Mask handles the narration is brilliant, scenes cutting into one another with such furry and dialogues that are pacy and strictly to the point are some of the major highlights. There is even a poem recital in the middle of a love making scene; that just takes top marks for ingenuity! And for a book boasting of such a âcoolâ hero, the author reveals that his hero isnât just another fighting machine but also has the intellect and acumen of a top class detective.

    Publisher's Summary:
It is the summer of 2001 and in Cairos crowded streets the heat is rising ... The unsolved murders of young homeless boys are fanning the embers of religious hatred. As tensions mount, Makana is hired to investigate threats made to a hapless travel agent.
But Makana's troubled past is trying to lay claim to him and when Makana witnesses a brutal killing he attracts the attention of both the security services and a dangerous gangster family....
    Critic Reviews:
"His skills are evident in the pace, confidence and emotional truth of this brilliant novel." (The Sunday Times)
"All the satisfying complexities of his first ... A superb novelist's eye for detail ... Like all the best crime fiction, Bilal's story has a depth and resonance which stretches far beyond its cast of characters into the wider world." (Independent)
"The Golden Scales shows modern Cairo as a superbly exciting, edgy and dangerous setting for crime fiction. Parker Bilal has delivered an absorbing, complex lively novel to match." (The Times)
    Members Reviews:
Even better than The Golden Scales
I discovered Parker Bilal after I read the review (The Golden Scales) in The Economist - and after reading Dogstar Rising - I would say that he is in class of his own. While most mystery books today are formulaic - one dimensional characters, unbelievable scenario, canned dialogs - Parker Bilal is a rare find. Although it is billed as mystery, it is a lot more than that - seeing Egypt and Sudan through his eyes is a real treat. Book verges on literature though never as dull. Cannot wait for his next book.
One escape from death after another
The story starts harmlessly enough for private investigator Makana. He's been hired by the owner of a travel agency to investigate a threatening letter.
But there are much more terrible things going on in the neighborhood. Young boys who live rough on the street are being tortured and murdered. When an employee of the travel agency gets shot dead in the street, Makana finds himself on the trail of a multiplicity of crimes â murder, fraud, thievery and political conspiracy.
The Makana mysteries are very political â very much about the struggle between Islamic fundamentalists and everyone else.
Politics aside, this book is a thriller to the core. People are shot, mutilated, thrown out windows and off roofs. Makana is constantly just barely escaping dire situations with his life, sometimes through quick thinking, more often through dumb luck.
Despite the profusion of tense scenes, the plot is not at all fast paced â probably because there are so many characters and so many storyline threads to follow.
So while I enjoyed the atmosphere of Cairo, I will probably not continue with the series. But decide for yourself. You may be better than I am at coping with complex thrillers.
Another good Makana mystery which keeps you guessing until the end
The Makana mysteries deserve a place up there with Donna Leon's Inspector Brunetti mysteries -well written, with complex plots, and bringing the unique ambiance of the great city of Cairo. Makana himself, a Sudanese in exile, is a character one wants to get to know better. He is clever and his insights into Egyptian culture and politics add much to the story. He is an outsider of a sort - but not a Western outsider.

A cross between a country-western melodrama and a film noir. Enjoyable plot had me guessing to the end. Hilary was awesome, too. Glad to learn there are more books with her.
    Very good.
This book was actually different than I expected it to be. I thought it was about different Opry stars murdered, but it was a good fiction book.

The great JFK conspiracy novel... the assassination in Dealey Plaza will never seem the same again. Darkly imaginative and believable... a totally original secret history of our time (Larry Celona, Chief Crime Correspondent, New York Post)

A welcome addition to the JFK conspiracy roster!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Most highly! This is VERY compelling read, by an author/performer duo who I hope to hear much more from in the future. Fascinating twists, no massive suspensions of disbelief required...just damn good suspense and enough personality to keep the listener on their toes...or..whatever is your favourite expression!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Our victim/hero was compelling, but I liked Georges.
What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His authentic accents and attitude are very approachable and compelling.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I wouldn't say extreme, but man, I was hooked!
    Any additional comments?
This is a VERY worthwhile read, and I can't recommend it high enough. ( Why not 5's across the board? The story does jump around at times, and the editing quality does leave somethings to be desired).
Notwithstanding, the creative idea, and subsequent movement of the storyline to advance the idea, are wonderful, with enough character development ( and engagement ) that the listener is pulled along in a whirlwhind of drama and suspense.
Spend the credit, and enjoy as much as I did!
A truth yet to be believed.
Would you consider the audio edition of Sixty-Three Closure to be better than the print version?
A clever piece of fiction(?) that sets the mind on a course of inner questioning
What other book might you compare Sixty-Three Closure to, and why?
this story concept was completely new to me, and though read some time ago still has me questioning in an unsettled way.
What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Paul has a fine repertoire of voices and together with intonations one finds it hard not to recognise them all as the one voice .
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A good storyline for a book does not always make a good film!
    Any additional comments?
A Frewin writes with a lot of skill, I would like to know about any other books he has written.

Tempe Crabtree is the resident deputy of Bear Creek, a small mountain community in the southern Sierra. Her continuing interest in the spiritual side of her heritage often causes unrest in her marriage to her minister husband. In Bears with Us, Tempe has her hands full when bears turn up in and around her town, becoming a threat to kids and adults when an elderly woman is horrifically killed. But are bears really responsible, or is there something else afoot?
    Members Reviews:
    This mystery "bears" reading!
    A Tempe Crabtree Mystery
Tempe Crabtree would have an idyllic life living in a pine tree studded and mountainous small village of the very aptly named Bear Creek, California--if it weren't for bears plaguing this small community. And they seem to be everywhere; in people's homes, the local school yard and plundering garbage cans behind the local café. They look cute, but bears, as the author teaches the locals both new and old, aren't always cuddly, and in a couple of instances they can maim if not kill humans.
Tempe, as deputy sheriff of Bear Creek is frequently called for all sorts the reasons, not the least of which would be to rid a family's home of another bear raiding their fridge. She's called to rid the Hampton family of a bear and meets the harried relatives of the once vibrant Vivian Hampton, a woman who is now suffering with dementia. Then there's Mrs. Onstett, who insists that Tempe do something about her daughter's relationship with an unsuitable boy and the unhappy, if oddly detached, parents of a fifteen-year-old boy who has committed suicide.
Untangling all of these people's problems, along with dealing with bears, will try Tempe's patience, but ultimately, it's her no-nonsense approach to people that allows her to discover who would cover up a death by pretending it was caused by a bear.
I can see why readers come back time after time to read the next Tempe Crabtree mystery. I want to live in Bear Creek, do rounds with Tempe, eat at Two-John's wonderful café and taste his latest culinary creation, sit in a pew at Hutch's church while he gives his parishioners kindly advice.
All in all, this was very cleverly done mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
    Beauty and the Bears
The small town mountain setting for "Bears With Us" is surprisingly similar to the place I live. The quaint ,scenic setting is captivating and the characters immediately become familiar folk. Due to the fact she is a local resident, Tempe Crabtree, of Native American descent, is the most demanded Bear Creek sheriff's deputy and rushes from one hot call to another. Such a hectic schedule leaves scant time to rest or enjoy her personal life with her husband, the pastor of the community church. Marilyn Meredith lets you ride along beside Tempe as she tends to her law enforcement job.
The book covers many serious subjects, one of which is Lewy Body Disease, and provides credible insight into black bears and how to
handle living safely in towns that have sprung up on their personal turf. The pace is fast moving and is an easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it
    and know you will, too.

When a hostage situation at a small Midwest bank results in no suspects, two Des Moines police officers learn that things are never what they appear to be, even when all the evidence points to one suspect - until it points to another.
    Members Reviews:
    This Book Spooked Me...
Not in a horror novel type of way, but in the realization that this plot could very well happen in real life and probably has/does. While I do enjoy a good tale of terror, I have found that it's the everyday things that aren't intended to be scary that can be the most frightening of all!
FRAMEDis for me first a look at what can happen when law enforcement is too quick to pass judgement and becomes so enamored of a quick resolution that they become blinded to any other possibilities that there may be. Not with in any way a malicious or destructive intent, just a true desire to close a case and get their man so that any strong nudge in a direction focuses them solely on that and they become lost along the way.
It is second a look at how law enforcement can discover their error in judgement, make an honest attempt to correct it yet still get the answer wrong which results (spoiler coming next) in 2 men being successfully framed, convicted and sentenced for a crime they did not commit.
The story was well written with few errors that I discovered, but I did subtract 1 star because I had figured out a major part of the ending long before the book closed (one half of who the true criminals were) and because that ending to me felt very abrupt, kind of like here it comes- WHAM! I will be looking for more from this author in the future.
    Not well researched
Midland Savings, situated in Des Moines, is robbed of 1.2 million while a group of customers is held hostage. Kevin Peters, an electrician working in the bank at the time of the robbery, finds himself framed for the crime.
I choose this book because of the premise of an innocent person finding themselves convicted of a crime seems totally plausible to me. Unfortunately, while the author has a good story he has not done enough research to make it believable for me. There is no mention of the FBI even though that agency always investigates bank robberies working with local authorities.
In one scene, the local police who are investigating are at the bank five days after it was robbed and there was plywood on the window and broken glass inside. The FDIC would not allow a bank to stay closed that long as it would erode confidence in the bank and in the system.
While the writing is okay, the novel ended up being about bumbling cops who can jail people at will - true horror that undoubtedly happens. When 1.2 million is missing, the authorities do not stop looking for it just because a conviction has occurred making the denouement less believable in reality than the reader is led to believe.
Had the author allowed reality to intrude and incorporated it into the story, he may have had a good book. 2.5 stars
    Novel Idea
An Iowa bank is robbed in broad daylight of $1,200,000.00. Thirty plus hostages are in the bank at the time, none of whom can give a cohesive story of exactly what happened or a good description of the robber. The police procedures that follow place probable guilt on two suspects, both of whom steadfastly declare their innocence. Neither will confess for a lighter sentence nor plea bargain with the prosecutor's office.
The story that unfolds is well thought out and well written.
