Love Maggie's character, independent and totally in control. She is an inspiration to all women. Really enjoy Nat as well .
    Complicated Crimes
This is the fourth in the Margaret Spencer Mystery series written by Gwendolyn Southin. The story, set in 1961, occurs in Vancouver and its surrounding mountainous terrain. Margaret and her professional as well as personal partner, Nat Southby, are private detectives involved, this time out, in solving the murder of Maurice Dubois, owner of a logging company.
It is the two of them who in fact discover the body, quite by accident, when they are cross-country skiing at the end of their Christmas holidays. They are subsequently hired by Maurice's wife, Jacquelyn, to solve the murder case. The action escalates quickly and what starts out as one murder case suddenly moves on to include Jacquelyn's killing as well. At this point, Maurice's children retain the detectives to solve both murders. Add to the mix the discovery of a smuggling ring bringing Egyptian artifacts into Canada and you have a very engaging story. The inevitable police involvement leads to increased entanglements for Spencer and Southby in trying to work the case.
Southin introduces a cast of characters who have known each other since the Second World War. Margaret or Maggie, as she's known, and Nat meet with them all as the detectives attempt to piece the various aspects of the case together. There are many plot twists and turns and all of this makes for a winning and fast-paced tale.
I thought that the story had enough ingredients to keep the reader's interest at all times. It seemed like a good, old-fashioned mystery that one might curl up with in front of a fire and get through in an evening: a page turner.

    Outstanding crime novella
    Rag Baby by Mark Ellis
I wasnât prepared for how much I enjoyed Mark Ellisâs crime novella Rag Baby. Not that I doubted Ellisâs ability, but I am a jaded reader of crime fiction and he is most familiar to me as a writer of sci-fi/adventure (under the pen name James Axler). It turns out that Ellis's skill for bringing alien worlds to life serves him equally well here.
Many writers have successfully tackled the beaches and coves of Floridaâs humid coastal pleasure regions, but no one (in my experience) has brought Florida's inland cracker/cattle country so vividly to life as Ellis. The author must be intimately familiar with (real) places like Yeehaw Junction and the diverse, reaching, hard-scrabble characters that populate his "fictional" world.
Our guide thru this alien land is retired DEA agent Bonaparte "Bone" Mizell (pronounced MY-zell), whose family tree has deep roots in central Florida's cattle and cannabis industries. The crime here is almost secondary to the character play, and one gets the sense that Rag Baby is just a dry run to what (I hope) will be a broader series. Mark Ellis has finally done for Florida what James Lee Burke did for Louisiana -- strip clubs, Dixie mafia, and all -- and I hope he will revisit the region soon.
Post script: I should add that I purchased Rag Baby for Kindle with the Audible narration-ready option and I'm so glad I did. This option marries the audiobook and Kindle version of Rag Baby, allowing the reader to jump back and forth between both versions of the book and even follow along in the ebook as the narrator reads to you. I listened to the audiobook, and then immediately re-read it a second time. Highly recommended.
    Excellent Hardboiled Crime Debut
Mark Ellis is best known for his science fiction and action/adventure work (he's the creator of the highly successful series OUTLANDERS and served as its principal writer for many years) and for his excellent comic book scripts for THE WILD, WILD WEST, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., and THE JUSTICE MACHINE, among many others.

a complicated family story with a unexpected ending.
I have just finished reading this novel and found it to be intriguing. It is a story with many twists and surprise developments yet it also was in a way rather predictable.I do not usually read mystery type books but this one got me hooked and I was interested to see what was going to happen. One of the main characters , Grandma Violet was a wonderfully entertaining potrayal of an old lady who had many dark secrets and she herself made the book worth reading. I think anyone who enjoys stories about complicated families would love this book
Atmospheric British mystery set in the dark days of December...
As daylight becomes shorter, there is nothing so comforting as a good novel. âThe sleeperâ set in the dark days of December leading up to and including Christmas certainly fills the bill. To say this novel is atmospheric is an understatement. An isolated Devon farm during a winter storm, a family gathered to spend the holidays together, andâ. a body.
Originally published in hardcover in 1998 this novel is now newly available through Open Road Media in ebook format.
"The sleeper" by Gillian White is told from three different perspectives. We have the perspective of Clover Moon, the farmerâs wife, mother of two teenage daughters, and one deeply unhappy woman. Never really cut out for the farming life she has inherited through marriage, Clover is bitter. She feels having her mother-in-law Violet as a house guest during Christmas week is putting her under even more stress than the holidays already entail. Clover has never lived up to Violetâs expectations for her beloved only son and finds fault with myriad things Clover does making Clover feel inadequate and an unsuitable wife. It is only with the help of her best friend Diana â who is also staying over Christmas â that Clover can cope with her mother-in-law.
We also have the perspective of Violet, a widow, who remembers her entire married life on this farm. Hers was a very different existence there as she worked alongside her husband and was a true helpmeet who strived to make the farm a success. Upon Williamâs death, she moved to the tourist town of Torquay where she now has a small bungalow. She holds seances there and has a regular group visit her bungalow to attend them.

    Stinks
What disappointed you about The Anaconda Complex?
Like nothing I've ever read. This is crap to the upmost degree, sorry author. Not worth the minimum stars in step one, but they require that you put down at least one.
What could Bryan Cassiday have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Burned it before he burned me and countless others. How did this book get any positive ratings at all?
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Its impossible to detract for obvious garbage.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment, and more disappointment.
    Any additional comments?
This guy belongs in book writers purgatory. No, I guess I went too far. He ain't no freaking writer.
    Unbelievably bad performance
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    A "normal" performance.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The plot was OK, all sound effects terrible.
How could the performance have been better?
Let ONE person read the book cut out knocking, ringing, car chase, bicycle noise!! and so on.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Certainly, the "performance" ruined it.
    Any additional comments?

    sweet and surprising.
I enjoyed the details and descriptions. I could almost smell the bold coffee and garden flowers. I wish the book was longer, a pleasant escape.
    Very interesting story!
This was a very interesting and sensitive story. It's a short book, and you won't put it down until you finish it!
    Loved it!!
Great book and a quick read. Can't wait for another by Gail Heller! I hope it won't be too long.
    Great short Mystery Novel!
This book is easy to read with its big font sizes. Also a good and quick mystery that can be finish in one sitting. Since I'm so busy with my life it just makes it easy for me and save me time also. Also this book is like a mini Italy vacation for me! Love it and would highly recommended it to everyone who loves mystery and shoes!
Ribbons, Bows, and Romance in Parma
If you like to read about opera, flower gardens, robust wines, parmesan cheese, and the atmosphere in which they most thrive--the ancient city of Parma--you will be seduced by this romance fantasy ghost story as I was. An idyllic trip to the "old country" of her husband-to-be leads this heroine to experience the supernatural visit of his slain sister and to discover with him family secrets long ago buried--at the same time that she experiences the raptures of Italian culture. My only complaint, apart from this book's brevity, is that she doesn't reveal "how to tell the difference between a mediocre and a fine cheese." Maybe Heller is holding this for a sequel?

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Here is a bluesy, neo-noir crime thriller that pits an Iraq war vet against the Chicago mob.
A veteran of the war in Iraq, where he suffered extreme injury, and a refugee from a sad Kentucky family history, Tommy McClain places his faith in a beat-up blue Chevy and his future in the city of Chicago. He's got a friend there he can count on.
What he doesn't count on is Lisa DePietro. She's pretty and openhearted, with dark eyes you could drown in. . .and she's being stalked. In a bar, on the El, and outside her house - by a big guy in a brown leather jacket. She's seen him in the shadows of his Lexus, heard him on her building's speakerphone. He's put notes in her mailbox, and she's sure he's even been inside her apartment, because someone's been rifling through her drawers.
Tommy figures he'll scare the creep off. Only he does more than that, and the shot from his automatic does more than settle a score. It sets off a gangland war that will catch Tommy in the crossfire between two mob bosses and their goons, as well as tangle him in police department investigations and the operations of an FBI special task force.
With that shot, a taut, suspenseful stalker tale erupts into a craftily wrought, unpredictable crime thriller with mob family honor and half a million dollars (in cash) at stake. Snared in the fray, Tommy has some advantages, like his infantry training and combat experience. He's going to need them. Because everyone in this mean town, it seems, wants to take Tommy's future away from him.
    Editorial Reviews:
Set in the modern day but with a twinge of nostalgic romance, the stakes are high in this creepy thriller, narrated by expert audio performer Bernard Setaro Clark. Clark takes on the voice of a detective: slightly ironic, hard to excite - as if he'd been around the block. Listeners will enjoy author Sam Reaves' familiarity with Chicago - he uses details about streets, El train routes, and other landmarks, to create a sense of realism against which to contrast the creepiness of the tale. There's a beautiful woman, and a stalkerbut no matter how expected this set-up sounds, you won't believe the twists and turns this audiobook takes!

Bought this book after reading Sam Reaves other book, "Cold, Black Earth." I enjoyed that book so much I had to have more Sam Reaves. He's a new author to me, although he has several books out.
In this book, we follow Tommy who's just gotten out of the Army and trying to decide what to do with his life. He goes to Chicago and stays with an old friend. I don't want to give anything away, but things take a dark turn for Tommy. There's twists and turns and surprises galore. I almost got tired of them, but NOT quite.
Sam Reaves is an excellent writer and I mind to purchase more of his books.

    Editorial Reviews:
This audio takes place during the heart of the civil rights movement, in a small, quiet Midwestern town. A black man is found dead in the trunk of a car, and Sam McCain, the town's attorney, seeks justice. This mellowly written murder mystery really evokes the mood of small town, rural America in the '60s, and delves thoughtfully into the intense race relations of the time. Prejudice and violence are the context for this story, which is ultimately about justice and redemption. Allan Robertson's grumbling cadence adds a whole other layer of drama to this, the seventh book in Ed Gorman's series Sam McCain.

TouchWood Editions is proud to introduce the first female sleuth in our selection of mystery novels. Author Gwendolyn Southin uniquely blends the charm of gumshoe techniques with the fresh perspective of a developing female detective. The Margaret Spencer Mysteries offer action and suspense, with a human subtext.
Just one year later, Margaret is coming into her own as an investigator, after leaving the comforts of her Kerrisdale home and her inattentive husband, a corporate lawyer. Living in trendy and bustling Kitsilano with Nat Southby, her newfound happiness is undercut by her family's pleadings to return home. In need of a vacation, she and Nat head for a ranch in the Cariboo. Instead of solace, they find violence, betrayal and an unsolved missing person's case that introduces them to host of new and questionable characters.
    Editorial Reviews:
Brimming with colorful characters, luscious landscapes, and striking storytelling, In the Shadow of Death is all the more remarkable for its clever, tasteful rejection of male-driven mystery and patriarchal private eyes. Listeners meet gumshoe Margaret Spencer, recently estranged from her self-righteous lawyer husband and living with a new lover, fellow detective Nat Southby. Set in 1959, Spencers story reflects a decided rejection of domestic docility, and rightfully so: as Spencer dismisses the demands of her pompous husband, she learns her friend Kates spouse has mysteriously disappeared, and sets about rescuing him. Actress Cynthia Barrett brims with impish intrigue, her tone at once sly, suggestive, and playfully smug as she follows the hardnosed heroine across British Colombia in search of her missing man.

    Four Stars
Easy read. She keeps getting in trouble
    Terrific Whodunit
P.I. assistant, Maggie Spencer, needs a break from her life. The husband she left months earlier is demanding she return home and her new love interest and boss, Nat Southby, wants her to move in with him. Her grown children aren't overly happy with her either, so when Maggie's landlord, Josie suggests a visit to her sister's dude ranch in British Columbia's Cariboo area, Maggie jumps at the opportunity for peace and quiet. When she meets her host, Kate, however, she learns that Kate's husband is missing, Maggie feels compelled to help the distraught young woman, but it isn't easy. The local RCMP officer wants her to stop meddling and local folks aren't particularly helpful or welcoming.
In the Shadow of Death is a terrific, traditional whodunit set in a beautiful location and with enough suspects to keep you guessing. What is especially appealing about Gwendolyn Southin's mystery is the 1959 setting; a period not often written about in B.C. Maggie's struggle to walk away from a traditional role and live for herself also adds interesting depth to the story. Maggie is a strong character who will go to great lengths for those she loves, and for justice. If you love fast-paced mysteries with a traditional flavor, then this is the book for you.

When Durrant arrives, Holt City is ripe with possible suspects: illegal whiskey smugglers, spies for rival railways, explosives dealers and a mysterious Member of Parliament who insists on getting his meddling fingers into everybody elses business. Durrant must use his cunning and determination to discover to identify the killer before he finds his next victim and derails the great Canadian national dream in the process.
    Editorial Reviews:
In the inaugural installment of Stephen Legault's Durrant Wallace Mystery series, a murder in the Canadian Pacific Rail camp at Holt City gives the emotionally unstable and one-legged Durrant Wallace a chance to prove himself as a policeman. With his young mute sidekick Charlie as his aide, Durrant must find the killer under the most challenging of circumstances and a brutal winter in the Rockies shantytown. Alan Marriott has a genial demeanor that slowly builds tension as Durrant goes deeper into his investigation, and there's an expansiveness to his style that helps turn Legault's historical mystery into a gripping epic.
