Why did these kids end up on the street, and how do they get by every day, now that they're there? Each has a history that took them away from their family; nothing of their daily lives is enviable.

I'm fortunate that my kids didn't end up on the street - and appreciate it all the more after reading Guttentag's book.

A quick, haunting read with characters that seem all too real. If you're like me, you'll be pained reading this book, but be unable to put it down. And when you're done, this story will have you hugging your kids.

Haunting and gripping

A haunting portrayal of teen-aged runaways living on the streets of L.A. and caught in the crossfires of a grisly murder of a high-profile lawyer at the famed Chateau Marmont. I was instantly compelled by the plight of Casey--a sweet girl who just cannot seem to catch a break--and her street "family." The LAPD detectives, Jimmy and Erin, eschew old "cop" stereotypes and are refreshingly NOT grizzled old noir cliches. Yet the police procedural itself takes a backseat to what is the real crime: the lives these teens live, and while some of Guttentag's descriptions of the horrors they face might startle, shock, and even unnerve some, to deny the reality would be to do a great injustice to what is happening in our world today.

not a John Coffin

I am a fan of Ms.Butler's John Coffin novels; however, I was disappointed in this book. I might follow the others in this series if I can find them in the library, but I would not buy another one to keep. The end "surprise" was obvious early on. The characters were not up to the Coffin standard. I did not think the story moved all that well either. I was expecting more action and better background information on the main characters. It was an effort to finish it. I will donate this to my local Friends of the Library rather than keep it in my personal library.

Clunky

I wanted to like this book because of its setting and the author (she's a favorite of mine); but the book was disappointing. The writing was of the "See Spot. See Spot run. Run, Spot, run," type. I'm donating it to the local book sale.

If you like THE KING CRIED MURDER you might try a little of this one, which takes up Major Mearns and Sergeant Denny a few years later, and embroils them in a mysterious case abd in the welfare of a little boy, Charlie, too cute for his own good. Almost ready for prime-time

New mystery series that takes place in the early 50's. I liked that part. Gwendolyn Southin did a good job of capturing that atmosphere/time, and her presentation of a woman's typical life back then was clever. Narration was pretty good.

Liked the interaction between Margaret Spencer and her husband. Comical, and sadly filled with elements of historical accuracy (at least as far as I recall). When she applies to be the assistant to Nat Southby, detective, he starts calling her Maggie (which is the symbol of her "liberation") and that aspect of the book was also very good. Her interactions with her daughters and mother-in-law were also funny and pretty accurate for the times. Great that it took place in Vancouver, though that aspect was not as developed as I might have liked.

So then the crime part. Could not decide if Southin was aiming to tell this story in a 1950's crime novel style, or whether it was still a bit amateurish. (I, sadly, leaned toward the latter). She had all the elements: people who were in league to be committing crimes, damsels in distress, the requisite danger and excitement at the climax...but it somehow, still felt a little unpolished. I think I would try another one, to see of it flows better as she keeps writing, because the idea of the plot was good, even if inelegantly presented.

A sizzler

This is perhaps ms. Weldon's most straightforward novel. The thrilling - and chilling - plot will have you on the edge of the seat as you feverihsly turn the pages to get to the end of the story. Do try to get a copy of this book. The plot? Well its about a woman who has an out-of-wedlock child with an american politician. All is well until he suddenly is in a position to become the next president of The United States. From then on the woman and her child is in deep trouble.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The reader had a New York accent, but that is all that made his reading bearable

What was most disappointing about T. M. Wrights story?

A premature ejaculating cop? This was not in the summary, I kept waiting to get hooked into the story, just when I thought things were getting normal, I was wrong. The main character came across as disturb from the beginning not at all what the summary advised.

What three words best describe Richard Henzels performance?

Steady, monotone, boring

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Laughing Man?

I would at least give Jack a couple of feathers in his hat on how this type of person made detective in the NYPD. nope just started off as him being a nut job from pressing play.

Simply put, this book sucks, I made it to chapter 12, almost 2 hours of listening, nothing makes sense and the main character is a premature ejaculating weirdo who the author lets you know that he sleeps naked way to many times. A detective that almost communicates with his victims sounds cool but this book is pure trash..... no no no run away run away

Who swindles whom: riveting tale of generations past to present

A riveting, very well constructed tale of a Nigerian banking swindle played on a Calgarian, and its impact on both Canadians and Nigerians far from the original players involved. From frozen Alberta to the coastal swamplands and then deserts of Nigeria, the setting and storytelling are so realistic you'd think the author had trekked through every mile described in the book as he tried to decide--just like myself -- who exactly are the good guys, who is playing whom, and who really are the winners. The winners and losers, we find out, evolve over time as there are multiple complex and overlapping historical undercurrents: consequences of slavery from both ends of the whip, remnants of colonialism that come back generation after generation to haunt the present, and of course black gold. The dark oil that seeps into so much of the action is well used as a mechanism to bind all these different societies together and highlight how the associated money and power drive so much human activity on different continents, from Canadian and Nigerian industry, to debates about which African really designed the necklace, the potent type. The engineering and technical aspects are well described and treated with refreshing respect, helping give added credibility to the novel. And, on a personal touch, the underworld boss pointing out his 46 and a fraction birthday just when I crossed that line as well at the time of reading this book was an interesting coincidence. Brought together, the hard scrabble lives, the backdrops, the plot, and the connections all make for very lively and gritty characters to which I became very attached by the end of the novel. Overall a fantastic read that connected on so many levels.

Exceptional Mystery

419 was an exceptional book that I would recommend anyone to read. It is narrated by many different people whose lives somehow intertwine in the most fascinating way. It is not only a mystery but it is also a thriller and on top of that it gives the reader an inside of the 419 scams that happen in Nigeria. This book truly opened my eyes too a whole new culture due the the global influence this book has. There is an educational aspect to it because the author really grasp the persona of each character in the book by exposing us to their culture. A good mystery book should always have you wondering by providing just enough detail to keep you wondering and always asking questions? That is exactly what this book does making it the perfect mix of thriller, surprise, empathy, sadness, happiness and revival. This book was all that it lived up to be. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Another good one in the series

I am reading this whole series. Good characters, well written. Love the location...western Washington, mostly the east side of the Seattle area. Since I am familiar with that area having lived there in the mid '80s, it's like visiting without having to deal with the traffic! ;)

Outstand book.

A fast, broad action-adventure.

The action in KBE is fast and furious, and the characters are painted with broad, colorful strokes. It reminded me of characters from the movie like Snatch - everyone's got a name or nickname (Officer Moranus comes to mind) that dispenses with pages of unnecessary backstory. The main character - EZ Knight - is equal parts Roger Moore's James Bond, Jack Reacher, and Sterling Archer.

It's not subtle, nor is it meant to be - my take on it was that it was an author having some over-the-top fun with the conventions of the action-adventure genre. Most of the adult content - there's one scene with a henchmen and a finger used as a weapon that stands out in particular - is played mostly for laughs.

The book ends with a cliffhanger that will have fans of this book reaching for the next one in the series.
