Bens back - and this time he means business. Family business...Benedict Macallan, protagonist of Dead of Light and wonder-worker malgr lui, has travelled the length and breadth of Europe and still discovered no family like his own. Maybe Macallan blood really is a biological sport, a freak of evolution.

He can run to the sun and hide among strangers, but he cant hide his powers from himself, and when a friend asks for help he has to use them. With blood on his hands once more, its farewell la dolce vita; he gets on his bike and goes home.

If he can work out who that is...

    A thoughtful protagonist
I liked this sequel very much. As a protagonist, Ben really lets you into his head. For being gifted with powers, he remains very human, and very vulnerable to the self-doubt and self-deprecation that comes with being human. For those people who find the perfection of Superman pretty boring, this is a fun super hero to get to know. The story rolls along at an excellent pace, with action and character development in solid, equal measures.
I'm interested in what happens with the Maccallan women though. Will they grow backbones? Will there be little short stories drifting out into the void about what happens when a perennially downtrodden group of chicks are shown that the ones constantly abusing them are vulnerable? I want to read about the revolution!
Get at it, would you Chaz?
    I love it.
I really loved this book. I think it was a combination of an imperfect hero and a good cast of characters, but mostly it was that the story didn't resemble any of the many books out there. It was a very easy read. I got hooked very early on in the story. And I didn't stop reading until the book ended. I only wish there was one more book coming out I could love to read more of Ben's adventures.
Same book - beautiful new edition :-)
I'm sure there have been some edits and the like, but it's the same fabulous story it has always been. If you've read it and loved it, support an author and get it again. If you've never read it, you're in for a treat!
Ben's return home was not a welcoming occasion.
Ben has returned after a two year self exile from everything. Ben had left the family because he did not have magic, some how his twin sister, born 30 minutes before Ben had gotten all the magic that should have Ben's. Ben's family controlled the town by fear ad demanding money from all local businesses, but now someone was killing and the family's control was slipping.
    Amazing voice!
The voice in this book is fabulous. It takes you straight to Ireland and enchants you. He does things with stream of consciousness I didn't know were possible. And it's all built on a high stakes, high tension plot where Ben has to rescue his girlfriend and stop a gang war.

    Very easy and enjoyable
The perfect story to while away time. Absorbing, but not taxing. Hours flew without me noticing. This is the second of Mark's books I've had on audible. I continue to enjoy the characters- particularly with Longworth as the narrator.
    Brilliant
Another great book. Engaging story, lots to keep you guessing, funny moments, characters you can relate to and great narrator.
    I love this series
I find myself fascinated by the characters in these books. McAvoy is a slightly confusing jumble of intense determination and incongruous shyness. His relationship with his boss is interesting and unusual with an undercurrent of something sexual.
The plot kept me guessing and a great twist at the end.
The narrator does a really good job of bringing the characters to life , I enjoyed listening to his variation of tones and accents.
I am about to download the third book !
    Still unconvinced by McAvoy
I wasn't a great fan of the first book in the series but appreciated the author's hard work enough to try the second. For a lot of the "Original Skin" I felt unconvinced, it just didn't seem as enthralling or well rounded as other detective series I really enjoyed such as PC Grant and Stuart McBride's but I stuck with it. I was rewarded by a spreading sense that maybe this series could progress as I found myself actually caring what happened to the cast of characters and rushed through the last half dozen chapters anxious to get the final twist
It'll be enough to draw me back for the third book, let's hope this improvement continues
    Detective series
I love these McAvoy books! Im looking for the next one. I have to read a series in the proper order and I have already downloaded another one but it is not the next in the series. I just love these reads!

    Publisher's Summary:
Cole Blackwater's life isn't what it used to be. Once a political superstar within Ottawa's environmental movement, he now runs a nearly defunct conservation strategy consulting firm that distinctly lacks a paying client. His ex-wife loathes him for a scandalous affair that ended their marriage, he feels he's failing his eight-year-old daughter as a father, and he's turning far too often to the bottle to solve his problems. When Peggy McSorlie, head of the Eastern Slopes Conservation Group, seeks his help to stop a mining project planned for Alberta's magnificent Cardinal Divide, Blackwater jumps at the opportunity to earn enough money to pay the rent and buy a few pints at his favorite pub. But when Mike Barnes, head of the mining project, is brutally murdered and a radical member of Eastern Slopes is accused of killing him, Blackwater must first prove the man's innocence in order to save his own business, and the future of the Cardinal Divide.
    Editorial Reviews:
Veteran performer Jay Snyders rich timbre sets the mood for this murder mystery from first-time novelist, Stephen Legault. Snyders well-paced delivery takes listeners up to the beautiful Cardinal Divide in Alberta, Canada, and follows a failed politicians attempts to help save this national treasure. The Cardinal Divide is the gripping and surprising introduction to Cole Blackwater, a political figure who has fallen on hard times, both professionally and at home. Peggy McSorlie, head of the Eastern Slopes Conservation Group, presents Cole with a great opportunity to not only save a beautiful piece of land, but also maybe his career. When a leading opponent turns up murdered, however, Cole realizes hes signed up for far more than a simple PR stunt.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent Murder Mystery
When you purchase a book from a first-time novelist one always wonders how much care has gone into character development and creating a seamless and believable plot. In the case of the Cardinal Divide, it's clear that Legault put a great deal of time into both. His characters are believable, and the plot entices you along for the length of the book, making it difficult to put down. This "enviro murder mystery" is somewhat unique in the genre, and is a breath of fresh air. Not only that, it does what a good murder mystery is supposed to do: it keeps you guessing "whodunnit" right up to the very end.
Lastly, I thought Legault's dialogue was a cut above many first time novelists. He has an adept ear for it, and it shows in his character development.

    Publisher's Summary:
London's Second City is shaken by a terrorist's bomb and a woman's body is found in a damaged building. The face is unrecognizable, the fingertips have been removed, but the handbag by the corpse appears to belong to Stella Pinero, the wife of John Coffin, Chief Commander of the Second City Police.
    Editorial Reviews:
In Coffin's Game, the late British mystery writer Gwendoline Butler managed to create a gripping tale of murder and terrorism without sacrificing the novel's central emotional relationship between a man and his wife. John Coffin, Butler's Second City police commander who starred in 34 of her mystery novels, is assigned to an urban bombing when he discovers that one of the victims might be his wife, Stella Pinero. The plot takes off from there, with a city's worth of twists and turns along the way.
London-based actor Nigel Carrington is responsible for performing the entire Coffin canon, thus he knows Butler's hero well. Carrington's enviable voice is cultivated and refined, but with a touch of sauciness befitting a complicated character.
    Members Reviews:
A Good Writer but Not the Best of Her Work
This latest installment in Gwendoline Butler's Coffin series was a disappointment. The plot was a convoluted mess of kidnapping, misplaced loyalties, a number of secrets, the usual deviants, detectives looking over their shoulders, a group of terrorists, and Chief Commander Coffin who knows all but tells nothing.
Stella Pinero goes on a short R&R to calm her inner demons, the ones that seem to wake her in the middle of a performance and ask, "What are you doing and why are you doing it?" She leaves shortly after two explosions (presumably placed by terrorists) occur in one day in the Second City. Stella disappears for several days, but her purse turns up at the scene of a murder, along with her clothing on the body of the deceased. There is also a disturbing photograph of Stella chewing on a human arm. Even the Chief Commander admits:
"It's like a Victorian melodrama ... The heroine's handkerchief turns up to incriminate her."
Of course, when Stella shows up, she acts as if nothing has happened. Oh, those actresses and their pesky secrets!
The investigation continues, along with much agonizing on everyone's part for having to suspect the Chief Commander's wife. Archie Young tries to get along with Inspector Lodge, a specialist in terrorism brought in to help out with the bombings. Phoebe Astley is as competent as ever, but her boss is worried about who she's sleeping with. But these have little to do with the overall plot and don't really do much to advance the story.
Coffin's "game" turns out to be little more than an investigation technique of walking the witness through familiar places. He turns it into a game of trust between him and his wife, trying to determine whether she will trust him with the truth, and it plays out rather like the melodrama Coffin alludes to earlier as he uncovers once of Stella's secrets from the past.
Butler's focus on her main character is overwhelmingly ponderous throughout the book. Coffin never seems to grow out of his staid isolationism. The seconary characters -- even the criminals -- are more interesting.

Once this book grabs you it will be till the END!
I found myself caught up in the first moments of the narration. Like a visual opening of a movie. Tony slowly closing in on his prey. A cadet from Annapolis tied up and drugged. As he comes to, Tony slowly cutting the buttons off his jacket. Caressing him as the cadet realizes that this was not the women he met at the bar the night before. Asking what do you want with me. Pleading to leave him go. Of course I will let you go says Tony as he then stabs him and pushes him into the water to never to be seen again! or so as he thinks. Great start isn't it? Now moving into the story as the other main characters evolve are Liz and Garret Adams. A middle age couple so tired of the busy life that they left for Mystic, CT to live on a boat for a slower pace in life. Well, so they thought. The couple soon finds themselves propelled into the murder of the cadet. Upon finding the missing body of the cadet a few days later washed up along the shore during their boat outing. Liz starts to get her psychic feelings and does not like what she is feeling and hearing from the cadet. "What are you saying?" asked her husband. Just get the police begs Liz. And so the couple especially Liz is now head deep in wanting to find the killer since the cadet asked her to do so. Except the captain tells her that the police will do the job in finding the killer.
As the audio narration proceeds you cannot help but keep listening to see what happens next! The author has done a marvelous job of taking the first introduce main character Tony that in your mind you will as I did think "Okay he is a cross dresser with issues". Only to find out there is an even darker secret that will come out later in the book. The investigating police officer like most I have encountered in other crime dramas finally comes out saying "Leave the investigating to us! Just share your info." That was until Liz starts getting threats and they think she is next! She finds herself sharing her concerns with some friends but should she? That is something that she and you the reader will find out!
Is her vision of the cadet real. She sees a psychic suggested by a friend and only finds that what she feels and other info that just may help find the killer. But everything she is told is like a riddle and shares that with the police.

    Editorial Reviews:
Canadian Mountie Jack Taggart's back. This time, he's in El Paso and a woman's gone missing. Taggart will need to penetrate a Mexican drug cartel to find her. Author Don Easton writes from personal experience, having worked as an undercover police officer in Canada for 20 years. David Drummond gives a strong performance. With casual pacing, he embodies Taggart's bravado while managing a variety of character voices. Meanwhile, Drummond's airy tenor compliments the mysterious tone. Fans of this series, and edge-of-your-seat drama, will enjoy this action-packed audiobook about the ugly underbelly of crime.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent
Jack travels to El Paso to rescue a teen aged girl and ends up in Mexico bringing down a major drug Lord.
    Gritty and realistic
It is absolutely frightening to think about what goes on in Ciudad Juarez. I found this novel really dramatic and read it at a great pace, anxious to find out how the hero survives. It has the ring of veracity.
    GREAT BOOK GREAT SERIES
Don Easton has written a great detective series centered on Jack Taggart, a Canadian undercover officer. Taggart must solve crimes while navigating the seas between the law, the bureaucracy, and justice- which are often in conflict and even opposition to each other. It is these conflicts, as much as the crimes themselves, which form the heart of these novels.
Easton was himself a law enforcement officer in Canada for twenty years so his plots and characters are realistic and absorbing.
As a retired law enforcement officer myself, I can testify to the realism he brings to his books and the fine story telling of his writing. I purchased one book, knowing nothing about Easton or his work and quickly devoured it, buying several others. Having read all of them I believe you will be entirely satisfied with this novel and wanting more of Easton books when you have finished it.
    Trite and preachy
If it were not for occasional profanity, I would have thought this book was for teenagers. Very simplistic and predictable.
And please save the preachiness about how evil Americans are for owning guns. It does not fit with the rogue cop character.
And FYI, the Spanish word for dog is perro, not pero. It got really tiring reading one of the main character's names as "El Pero".

    Any additional comments?
** spoiler alert ** I thought the concept for K.A.R.M.A was interesting. I still think it's interesting. But I couldn't go any farther than Ch. 11. It's not that it's horribly written (well, the dialogue could be better), or littered with grammatical errors, there's just something off about the focus. There's too much emphasis on details that don't need it, and where it could be developed, it's glossed over. I know this is vague, but I don't want to leave too many spoilers for those that this doesn't bother (I admit - I'm particularly picky about what I read) and are reading or would like to read the book. For me, there's also an issue of plausibility. I read fiction. Fiction is fake. But to have a good story, even if it's vampires or faeries or zombies (nothing of that nature in this book, just an example), there has to be an air of plausibility, a hint that this could be happening... some root in something in which the reader is familiar or identifies. I am thinking of a very specific thing, but I can't do this without a bit of a spoiler, so stop reading now if you don't want to know.

    A Little Predictable
Sheriff John Twait and his wife of 20 years, Sarah, are a month away from retirement. The little town of Hillsville, Nebraska is a fairly quiet town. Twait is training his replacement, Detective Mike Yeager. It's a culture shock for him .... dial-up internet, CSI is a box with fingerprinting supplies.
And then it seems like a dark cloud has covered their little town. First they find the body of an elderly lady and her adult daughter is missing. This would be the first murder here in at least 30 years.
But it doesn't end there. Two more citizens are murdered. No clues, no fingerprints, no suspects.
So how do these murders connect to an on-line social network? And since all the bodies had traces of heroin ... where is the heroin coming from? Are these killings motivated by revenge, greed, money? And just what part do twitching eyes play?
Since this is a short story, Twait has only a little time to solve the crime.
The characters are okay as far as a short story will allow the author to give them some depth. I really liked the cover .. that's what drew me in to begin with. Story line is a little predictable, except for the ending. That was a shocker!
Didn't this guy have an editor
Not a bad story idea for a novella but soooo many errors. Wrong words, words used in error and so much more. Really bad, obviously this guy didn't have anyone else read it before he published.
This one begs for proofing and editing
Unfortunately, I can't really recommended this short story to anyone other than a competent editor. This story is difficult to read due to the author's writing style and is particularly bad when his characters are conversing. There are myriad mistakes in puncuation and grammar, not to mention a plethora of spelling errors and omissions. Additionally, the characters seemed flat and one dimensional and the author saw fit to give unusual traits to many of them. There just wasn't anybody who was really likable. Now add a predictable plot with no real shocking twists or turns and you end up with, at best, a 2-star read.
    Too silly
Characters not realistic at all. Plot ridiculous. Don't know why I kept reading it. I would not recommend this book.

Don't enjoy giving bad reviews, but this is the first book that I ever just quit reading and deleted from my Kindle. Whatever category - grammer, punctuation, context, maturity level, style, etc., it is the worst book I've ever read. My apologies to the author, but the book should have been handed to a friend or editor to read first so that they could have told the author that it should never be submitted for actual publication without a complete re-write.

TouchWood Editions is proud to introduce the first female sleuth in our selection of mystery novels. Author Gwendolyn Southin uniquely blends the charm of gumshoe techniques with the fresh perspective of a developing female detective. The Margaret Spencer Mysteries offer action and suspense, with a human subtext.
Back in Vancouver, Maggie and Nat begin their next adventure at a cranberry bog where a veterinarian's assistant has been found dead. A long trail with a faint scent to follow, their victim's double-life leads them to a strip club, a bogus religious sect, and a nursing home with a dark underlying secret.
    Editorial Reviews:
In this third book in Gwendolyn Southins Margaret Spencer Mystery series, plucky protagonists Nat Southby and Margaret Spencer stumble onto a violent crime in an unexpected location, and must track a killer through cults, clubs, and even an old-folks home as they seek truth, justice, and above all, answers!
Cynthia Barretts light, measured tones accentuate the tension in this exciting mystery, and she is especially skilled at breathing life into Margaret Spencer herself, whose adventures in sleuthing are made especially exciting by her role as a rare female detective in this 1950s drama. Barretts pacing is perfection, and listeners will find themselves loath to press pause as she spins this yarn to its stunning climax!

An Entertaining Romp with a Feisty Sleuth
Vancouver in the Sixties might seem like a naive and innocent Canadian city, but amateur sleuth Margaret Spencer finds herself embroiled not only in a neferious puppy-farm plot but extortion and murder. Her boss and lover, likable investigator Nat Southby, tries to keep her on the short leash of the title, but nothing stops the redoubtable Maggie from discovering the truth. This formidable lady may enjoy her cup of tea, but she's also unafraid to crawl though a muddy pasture, sneak into a hideaway, or face down a gun-wielding villain. The action's non-stop as ace storyteller Southin knits up her plot with needles of perfection, dropping no stitches as she builds to a neat climax. The best news is that Margaret has many more adventures awaiting her in one of British Columbia's most exciting cities.
