Ever wonder if professors live quiet lives of mediocrity? Wonder no more. Professor Reeves delivers a sensational story. He gets it. Great characters make great stories, and Betrayal has both. His academic novel introduces Richie Bucceroni, and a complex supporting cast that could fund any needs of a New York CSI show. Betrayal in Brooklyn swoops. Before you know it, you're on page 30, then 50, then heading to the finish line. This thrilling gritty mystery is expertly told, easily digested; it leaves you frustrated there isn't more. If Reeves changed his first name, he may well be on his way following in the path of Dashiell Hammett.

The author's droll sense of humor is expressed through the observations and experiences of his protagongist Richie Bucceroni. Bucceroni leads the reader through seamy Brooklyn neighborhoods populated by sundry gang members, oversexed academia, and various other unsavory characters.

The story moves quickly and is fun to read. It is a page turner as the reader is anxious to met the latest character or see how our hero manages to extricate himself from his continual escapades, some of which are very scary, and I found, often nerve racking.

Who is the betrayer? I figured it out. Will you?

I am looking forward to the sequel.

Betrayal in Brooklyn

Writing in a style that would make Dashiell Hammett feel right at home, Reeves demonstrates his artistry by making that approach fresh, contemporary and entertaining - even for someone who hasn't the slightest clue who Dashiell Hammett is. Attempting to be witty can be dangerous for an author but Reeves pulls it off so well you may be anticipating the next zinger as much as the next twist of the plot. Even with the hyperbole, the insider peeks at the life of a college professor provide an unusual but natural setting for this non-stop thriller. I couldn't put it down.

Such an exciting read... its Brooklyn as you can only imagine

Bucceroni is a real "knight" of Brooklyn--this book is all about a guy who cant seem to avoid trouble. Lots of action, plus I was kept guessing until the last pages. Loved the other characters like Candy the woman with half a face and Beef Patty the security guard who's supposed to be protecting Bucceroni. A real look at Brooklyn the way it is today. I'll buy Vol.II when it comes out.

Hard Boiled Professor

Betrayal in Brooklyn is as hard boiled as they come and Bucceroni is as noire as any detective. Good stuff here from the back alleys of NYC roughest borough, written by a man who may just have seen it all from Ave A to Ave Z. I look forward to part II already.

Entertaining and unusual, but a convoluted plot and less than engaging characters left me wishing for Quinn and McCleary. It was a bit of a disappointment.

A good story with a horrible electronic transcript. Roughly a typo per page, including the main character's name.

TJ MacGregor has a way of presenting her story that is unique. This is not one of her best. I do know that she is capable of bette.r things because I have read many of them

Sad, Bad, Egad!!!

Roger Herst can spin a good tale, but his stories would be vastly improved if he did not create his lead character as a rabbi. The characterization of Rabbi Gabrielle is not true to a rabbi and is certainly not in keeping with Jewish morals, standards or practices. She acts like a self centered teenager. She is amoral. and hypocritical. In an earlier book, she sleeps with a congregant and she has a long term affair with a Christian, while refusing to perform the marriage of a Jew to a non-Jew. In this book, she is on a different path and is no longer a pulpit rabbi, which is an improvement. All of the books are poorly edited and have poor transition between the multiple story lines. I cannot believe I have read several of the books in this series, but the stories have been interesting, as long as I pretended "rabbi" Gabrielle was not a rabbi. With this one, I am done and will not read any more books in this series. Roger Herst would do well to switch to adventure stories with no religious themes. He can tell a good story.

I wish the author had picked up where he left off in the last book plus he didn't explain in detail what had happened to her husband...that was disappointing. Regardless I still enjoyed the book and was sorry (once again) to see another character killed off. I look forward to more books in this series.

Tic, Tic, Boom!

Jeffrey Walls is just an ordinary guy trying to make a living. He wakes up each morning to two guys who are constantly pulling some kind of prank that involves his new car and at work he is the low man on the totem pole.

This all changes one day when he hears a "ticking" and becomes someone totally different, someone who begins to stand up for himself.

At 52 pages, Boom, is a quick read but one that grabs you around the throat and doesn't let up until the very last page.

I look forward to more from Michael Whetzel and hopefully a little more from Jeffrey Walls as well.

pretty good

This is a pretty interesting piece. A fellow disenchanted with his life. He is aggravated and sleep deprived. He has an incessant ticking in his head, along with a number of people who incessantly pick at him.

This tale is a couple days snapsshot in his life. The story has some fine work in it and lends itself to a number of possibilities for future works. He could become what he states he wants to be at finale (with new book focusing on scenarios related) or his next tale could be the trip out west and the events that transpire getting there (in same vein of his final wish, or perhaps more bad acts occurring TO him, driving him to become something else - good or bad). The writer has a couple of gem lines that show he has potential. The story needs a better editor than one that went over it. Or, at least a relook. There are a number of grammar and punctuation errors. There is an inconsistency as well: it flips between (his degree) architect and engineer. At one point the MC states it is architect when asked if (or stated by someone) engineer - then when relating the scene about his paernts it is written engineer. I believe this error occurs twice.

I would read another work by this author. A longer one though.

Live vicariously through this book

I read it in one sitting, and now I want to be Jeffery Walls. He stands up for himself and takes control of his life; we all want to do this and it is what makes this a fun read. Mr. Whetzel has been doing a great job at creating characters whom with the reader can easily empathize.

Short But Sweet

A quick read, as are most of Whetzel' s, but satisfying never the less. This is a story I think most of us can relate too. I think the central theme focuses on how we often witness and/or experience little injustices in the world and wish there was something we could do about it. This story let's you live vicariously through the main character and dole out your own brand of justice.

Love this series!

Good Mystery.

This book, along with all the Dido Hoare mysteries, was good. Marianne MacDonald is a very good writer. I only have one problem with her books and the use of one certain word. They don't seem to be called for and I really wish she had left them out.

Suicide and Dickens

Paul Grant weaves in and out of Dido Hares life like a bad penny, but who uses whom when the chips are down? The sixth installment of Marianne MacDonald's series has all the quirks and bends that makes this modern cozy fun to read.

A frequent customer bounces a check and plunges to his death. Timothy Curwen, who lives in the apartment house of the deceased sets Dido on a long chase when she arrives to evaluate his estate and discovers only the last purchase, which she takes home with her. Rumors and secrets emerge as Dido discovers she didn't know her customer.

A nice addition to this fine series.

Nicely written and English. A fun read

Single mother and antique book dealer Dido Hoare is supprised when one of her best customers bounces a check. Then she finds that he apparently committed suicide. Financial ruin would explain the bounced check and the suicide, but it wouldn't explain the continued interest the police have in her customer, the law firm that's handling his non-existant estate, or the odd story that turns up in the newspaper writing up the dead man's life. Dido is in to the tune of the two hundred pounds the first edition Dickens is worth and she decides to see if she can get her money back somehow. What she finds is a surprise--none of the expensive books she sold the dead man are anywhere in sight.

Author Marianne Macdonald writes an interesting story. Dido and her father, Barnabas, in particular are well developed characters with full lives and curiosity that drives them on even when they know that they are simply getting into trouble. Macdonald's strong writing sustains reader interest even when not much is happening.

Toward the final third of the novel, the story seems to meander a bit, as if Macdonald wasn't sure where to take it. The plot line recovers however, with an exciting chase scene to bring things to closure. Fans of this fine series will definitely enjoy DIE ONCE.

Dido Hoare's Antiquarian Books and Prints store is doing well and the associated mail order business and website is increasing profits for the single mother and her son. One of her best customers is Timothy Curwen who usually buys her expensive Victorian books whenever she gets them into stock.

I love Craig Clevenger and Will Christopher Baer

I'm a huge neo-noir fan. I love Craig Clevenger and Will Christopher Baer. This should have been right up my alley. BTW, I live in Brooklyn and love stories set in my gritty city.

The story is fast-paced and riveting, however this is very lazily written.

How many times can we mention the phrase " in Brooklyn"? However the payoff of that phrase is that I'm never given the flavor of Brooklyn or any specific locales so anyone not from the borough would learn squat about the area.

Secondly how lazy is it to write "I know the drug responsible" but never mention what drug it is and what it does. It was as if the author couldn't be bothered to go to his PDR and do some research.

All in all it was a good story but next go-around the author should hire a good researcher and get a little more descriptive. Overall in my opinion this is a 2.5 book. And I'm sad about that. It could have been great.

A noir novel...

Okay, so reviews are just opinions, not necessarily fact. Here's another, opinion. This IS a noir novel. Foul language and being hard boiled is the make up of such. Reeves delivers! It's gritty, so be advised. If you don't like that genre I would recommend that you find something else more to your liking. If you do, I am confident you'll be very entertained by this compelling work of - fiction!

Too raunchy for me!

Terrible language, raunchy characters. Not for me...this will be the first and last I read by this author.

The Story Idea is Good, Would Benefit from A few tweaks!

This was a gritty look at life in present day Brooklyn with a vengeance/mystery twist. Candy is a college student with a shady after class job selling drugs. . . (Not your typical work study job am I right? But people who work in the grey areas of society sometimes experience a tragedy and this is what happens to Candy.Â

She ends up getting caught cooking drugs at the school by her chem professor and he encourages her to clean up her act. . . Which she does but there is just one thing she forgot. . . New 2 partners haven't forgotten her and they are bent on showing her that you don't up and leave the life unscathed. She survives but with extensive damage to her face that even plastic surgery cannot fix.Â

She turns more to the dark underworld where the gang that her main competition is involved in new dealings and Candy is bent on finding her 2 partners and making them pay (in painful, slow ways!) There are some plot twists and that kept me reading despite some issues I had with the writing style (the author made some choices style wise that i'm not sure I quite understand) and the editing at least in my version was not as good as it could have been.

Not a compelling read -- but I did finish it

Almost every chapter started out with Kimberly did this, or Kimberly did that "stepped out of the building" "stood before the building" etc. I also got tired of the references to the 'killer' doing this or that. It detracted rather than added to the story. However, having tried a couple of times to write a mystery myself and realizing it wasn't that easy, I learned to respect anyone who can finish writing a book and getting it published. So I wish the authors good fortune. The criminology professor angle was interesting; however, I'm not sure how realistic it might be that a detective would confide so much to anyone outside the investigation, particularly someone so personally involved with the victim(s). It would make sense for her to share her insights with the detective, but the other way around...?

An Exciting Murder Mystery! Will keep you spellbound!

I just finished reading Jan and Fred Yager's first novel written together entitled "Untimely Death", and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I was so hooked, I could hardly put the book down. As it states on the jacket cover, the story is written in the tradition of other thrillers such as "Silence Of The Lambs" or "Single White Female". I would add "Basic Instinct" to that distinguished list. As a matter of fact, all the way through I was thinking that this book would make a great movie. I must say I had no idea of the real killer's true identity up until the end when the authors finally revealed it. I enjoyed the characters and found them very fascinating. The book explores the nature of friendship between two of its major characters in a very intriguing way. One obvious benefit of a husband and wife writing team was that the male and female characters were both developed without showing a preference for one gender over another. I am looking forward to the next novel from this great writing team!

This book was a fun read and a good puzzler

This book is a fast, fun read. And while that may sound odd for a book about murder - it illustrates the real power behind this book. Like any good murder mystery, there has to be strong visualization, but without dwelling on the gory details.

A well-done story

Marla Gershe is a middle-level supervisor on the Textile Planet, an entire world devoted to textiles and the making of clothes. It's a high-stress job; Marla has daily production quotas that must be met. One day, Marla's boss takes away half of her staff to put them on another project, but Marla still has to make her daily production quota. Marla has had enough, and organizes a strike among the employees. In the confucion, Marla is shot in the stomach, and is rushed to the hospital.

Wherever Marla is, it is not exactly a hospital. She undergoes several months of experiments, like someone is doing psychological warfare on her. BAC, the consortium that runs the Textile Planet, would very much like Marla back at work, but Marla would rather be anywhere else. She gets out of the hospital, and immediately hops a spaceship to the most distant planet, a place called Ansonia.

Ansonia is said to be the "end of the line." Think of an 1800s American frontier town. It's a planet with a severe employment shortage; as long as you have two arms, two legs and a semi-functioning brain, you're hired. Marla finds herself doing data entry, locked into a cubicle for several hours a day, entering rows of numbers that come to her off of pieces of paper that come out of a chute. Marla has no idea what the numbers mean. At lunch, her fellow workers talk about the usual lunchtime topics, and about much deeper subjects, like the roles of men and women. After a year, Meko, Marla's boss, tells her that people have been asking about her, so a fast departure is a very good idea.

Marka ends up on an unexplored, desolate rock called XKJ-10. If Ansonia is the end of the line, XKJ-10 is much farther out than that. Marla meets Sam, a human who has been living on the planet for several months. He has a beard down to his waist, he has quite a mansion (made up of a number of different tents) and he claims that he can talk to the local ants. A major scientific discovery is made several million miles away (next door in astronomical terms), so XKJ-10 goes from being a desolate planet in the middle of nowhere to the most popular spot in the galaxy. Marla and Sam plan all sorts of construction, including a spaceport and hotel, to take advantage of all those scientists who will be coming their way.

Here is an interesting story that moves very quickly, perhaps too quickly. It's well done, and it will keep the reader's attention.

Funny but Moves to Quickly

Sue Lange's Textile Planet follows the trials and tribulations of Marla Gershe, a high-octane manager working in a futuristic world of high fashion. Marla is so over-the-top as to be completely believable, spending much of the book either screaming at the top of her lungs at people around her or just on the verge of doing so. With a quirky sense of humor and touch of compassion, Lange hits on everything for corporate greed to government apathy to workers' rights to discovering one's true purpose in life.

The book, however, suffers two issues that get in the way of an otherwise entertaining story.
