CRAZY AS A WHORE IN THE VATICAN

Backwoods, backward, cannibalistic inbreed Yankees, my kind of book. This is Ketchum's first book, which explains the inconsistences in the writing. At times you think great and at others NOT. Overall it is a good read if you are into this type of stuff. Konrath writes better, but I don't know if I have read his first book, so we may not be comparing apples to apples.

It has gore, it has lots of sex and yea, it is a little sophomoric. If you are not into this genre, you will not like it, if you are into it, you will have a hoot.

I thought the narrator was pretty good. He is the kind of narrator, which makes you forget someone is narrating. You feel like you are reading it in your head, can't see how anybody could object to him.

Wow!

Where has this autho been all my life? I'd never heard of Jack Ketchum till recently, and took a chance on this book. I am partial to this type of story, and the genre in general, but I didn't expect the book to be as good as it was. Very, very intense, graphic violence, but for a good reason. The antagonists (the family of cannibals) are truly froghtening, even the children. If you can deal with the violence, I highly recommend this book. One of the most frightening stories I've read in a long time.

Breathless

I now understand why Jack Ketchum's "Off Season" is a classic.

Mr. Ketchum is a master of setting a scene. He is also expert in building tension and conflict.

The story was gruesome...deliciously so. His writing...genius.

I will listen to it again.

Nice!

Flowed really well. People didn't like some of the gore but I'm all for it. It wasn't to much that made the story lose traction. It was a good listen. Fast paced and had me tense up in quite a few moments. People out to relax and end up in a fight for survival that leads to one of the most horrible nights I can remember in a book. Overall I liked this book. Good scary horror.

Disappointing

While Ketchum's story is entertaining in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way, it would require a far better narrator than Richard Davidson to make it acceptable as an audio book. The story and prose are crude and require a more skilled narration than is provided to make it work. I gave up on it about one third of the way through. Not recommended.

Painful

It would have made a nice Twilight Zone episode, but the narration made it sound like a badly-produced high-school play.

Great story-over-produced

This is a fun little, memorable, short story, but the voice changes and "special effects" are inconsistent and over the top. All in all, worth the time and money if you can get through the weird recording.

This author was trying very hard to scare and to conjure up horror. I did not get it. I think it is supposed to be a classic so maybe its me but I do not like overly contrived plot details like these.

the worst reader

I did not look closely enough to see that it is NOT a sequel to Diplomatic Immunity by Lois M Bujold. The reader is the worst I have ever heard. I have tried 4 times to get into the book, and cannot get past the flat pedantic reading where all the characters sound the same. I always adjust to readers, and this is a first. Too bad, the writing may be ok. The writer has no regard for the talent a good reader can bring to an audio book. It should be re-released with an actor reading it.

Painful to listen to

Wow, what can I say, the narrator made this story hard to listen to. I have not been able to make it past the first hour because I end up falling asleep. The story may very well be a great one... but heaven knows I may never find out!! Would I recommend this audio book? Perhaps if you are suffering from insomnia.

Great

I loved this book. The characters were so good and by the end of the book I felt like they were part of my family! Loved the interaction and hope there are more books coming with them.

I loved the narrator too!

If you're reading this review, you only have one question. You're not looking for a book review, you already know it's a classic. You already know this is the most original, and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature. You may or may not like the story, but that's a matter of personal taste. A lot of people don't like Shakespeare, but no one questions whether he was a good writer or not. If you don't like the writing style, it's because you aren't familiar with the English of this period. Nearly eighty years before Stoker's "Dracula" ( an idea stolen from Polidori's "The Vampyre", which was an idea stolen from LeFanu's "Carmilla"), this most-original horror masterpiece was born. So, your only question is, "Is this really the uncensored 1818 version? Because I've only seen one other verified version, and it's over twenty dollars in paperback. All the others claiming to be the 1818 version have been disproved." YES, as far as I can tell, it is. The only preface is Shelley's own original. There is no introduction, no commentary or editorial credits whatsoever. There are no illustrations, and the spelling and language have not been edited. Have a good thesaurus handy. So, here it is, the author's original script, no frills, for a bargain price. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Not what the movies would have you believe...

I never saw an entire Frankenstein film, only fragments here and there, but those left me with an impression that is far from the essence of Mary Shelley's book, Frankenstein. For one, Frankenstein is not even the name of the monster; it is the name of the man, Victor Frankenstein, who created the monster. But that is minor. The true surprise was how many issues relevant to today this book brings up--obligation to family; personal responsibility; fate; how far can science ethically go; does man have a right to create life; what is our responsibility for life we've created--these are a few intriguing questions raised. I enjoyed the book, but better than the book was the discussion I participated in with a group of friends; it was definitely one of the best I've ever been involved in. This is a great book to read with a friend or two who will discuss it with you. I think society would be well served if this novel were required reading, especially in every medical school and science and ethics class. We need to think deeply about these issues, and Frankenstein helps us to do so.

Another classic worth your time

Early into Frankenstein, I might have given it 3 stars because of its old-fashioned language and letter-writing format. I was not interested in Walton's whining to his sister Margaret about loneliness and friendship. And I found this part of Shelley's writing stiff and uninteresting.

That all changed once Walton rescued Victor Frankenstein from the icy sea near the North Pole. Frankenstein's story is great on a couple levels. First, the thriller element still has its appeal. You are fascinated that Victor has created life and you wonder at the consequences.
