Goth Goes West

Loved this book, unique take on the genres of western crossbred with horror. Really like the narrator's ability to inhabit characters from Custer to an Indian scout,remarkable.

Liked the idea of linked 'episodes', worked quite well in this context. Highly recommended, more twists than a coiled up rattler and strikes the same way. I want more stories about this sinister cast of classic western archetypes with a twist.

WAS SHAKESPEARE, QUEEN ELIZABETH?

NO BEAUTY PARLORS

The title story STEEL, was a Twilight Zone episode. This is longer. The abridged version was better. I did not get to see the movie with Will Smith. Of the 15 stories only one was bad. The problem with this collection, is that most of the stories are just so-so. Not bad, but not great. The collection is also listed as a horror, when it is more a collection of Science Fiction. There are robots, time travel, a western, nuclear bombs, a doll that talks and grows older and much more.

Brick is to narration as William Shatner is to Star Trek

If you love Matheson, you will want the collection, if you are new to Matheson, get I AM LEGEND or one of the many Twilight Zone episodes he wrote.

What made the experience of listening to Steel and Other Stories the most enjoyable?

I've always loved Richard Matheson, ever since I first picked up Hell House more than 15 years ago. Ever since then, I've read everything of his I can find, even rare and out of print titles. Matheson is a better writer than 99.9999% of all the authors writing in the horror/thriller genre today. As far as creating believable characters you can come to care about, adding details that truly make the story come alive, and having a keen sense of human nature, the only author who I feel comes close today is Stephen King, though their writing styles are widely different.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Steel, the former prizefighter in the first short story. He's a dreamer who still believes that if they win the next fight, book the next match, try the next town, he'll make it big. He believes in the run down fighter he's managing to such an extent that he refuses to see reason. When his fighter ends up unable to compete right before the match that will provide money they're absolutely relying on, he decides to take his fighter's place, despite having not fought in years and knowing there is no way he'll ever win the match and may not even survive against his opponent.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene in which Steel, facing the fact that his fighter is too run-down to compete, decides to step into the ring himself. He shows a great nobility there, knowing his partner is depending on the money from the fight. It's an amazing scene, handled with an expert observer's razor-sharp sense of human nature, emotional without being soppy. It's at this moment where I found myself caring about Steel the most.

If you could rename Steel and Other Stories, what would you call it?

I'd leave it as it is.

A Good Read, but Poor Kindle Formatting

I enjoyed the story, but the Kindle formatting is very poor. I also purchased "The Colour out of Space" by the same publisher, which had the same formatting issues, but was the best-formatted version of the story I could find for Kindle. Both stories have strange formatting, which causes every other line to consist of one or two words when the Kindle is held vertically, and for the text to be wrapped to the left 2/3 of the screen when held horizontally. The story isn't unreadable by any means, but this poor quality is very galling. On the one hand, it is only 99 cents for a short story, but on the other hand, I've purchased plenty of other short stories free of formatting errors for the same price.

Great story, poor editing

The story actually very good, but the editing / formatting of this ebook is terrible. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a different version.

Creepy, Eerie and Wonderful

Excellent rendition. I enjoyed every moment of it. I really have no criticism of it and would buy it again if necessary. Great job.

Shaun Hutson at his best

An incredible book with a brilliant twist! I won't give anything away as other reviewers do sometimes, but I think my favourite part was when paul realises where he is. The narrators timbre added to the story. I was disturbed by the description of the rape but I suppose any reader would be and that is the point at times with a horror story.

This book has been first class.

Very good thriller

This is an engrossing thriller from an author who really, really knows how to write good fiction.

The book hooked me in right away. The pace, and my interest level, never wavered. Marshall's depiction of the protagonist's wired, workaholic, ambitious, ultimately likeable character is excellent. His prose is crystal clear and razor sharp, so smooth it almost reads itself, and works in thoughtful observations about the human condition without slowing things down. The book has good tension throughout & the twist at the end is pretty satisfying.

I have been a fan of Marshall's since 2002 when I had the good fortune of discovering an abandoned copy of The Straw Men at the hotel I worked at back then. Since then I've read every one of his books (including the noir-ish Sci-Fi he wrote as Michael Marshall Smith - Spheres, One of Us, and Only Forward are all fantastic) and will continue to purchase his new books.

One quibble: the obvious choice for a title given the book's content would have been Modified & would have been a great title. Why call it Killer Move, a title that has nothing to do with the book?

a page turner

I'm a tough customer when it comes to suspense thrillers but was hooked on Killer Move almost from page one. Sure, there are some formulaic elements, but these are far outweighed by a gripping plot that draws close to the line of implausibility without ever crossing it. Marshall sustains a dark and menacing atmosphere in his Sunshine State setting and offers a textured protagonist whose admirable qualities are at times diluted by his own darker impulses. One more plus for me: no explicit sex scenes or gratuitously drawn out scenes of gore and violence -- crutches upon which less able writers so often seem to rely.

Bottom line -- it ain't exactly literature, but for what it is, Killer Move is very good.

Graphic, original horror novel with a ridiculous alternate title

This book was first published in 1974 under the title "Children of the Night." The title was no doubt derived from the line spoken by Dracula in the novel of the same name. Hearing wolves howling outside Dracula says "Listen to them! The children of the night! What music they make!" Considering what happens in the book, the title is very apt. But for some reason this book was reprinted with the title "Dracula's Children." The new title is ridiculous; the novel has nothing to do with Dracula or vampirism. But a new line is added to the reprint: "What had he expected...Dracula's children?" I suppose the line was added to help make sense of the new title. But the title is still incongruous and strange.

The novel is set in New York in the seventies. It's the story of five children, all around twelve or thirteen years old: "two Spanish, one black, one (possibly) white and the other, God knows."

Their lives are a living hell, replete with grinding poverty and physically and/or sexually abusive parents. These five children, in order to escape the misery of their lives, dissociate (it's like a form of multiple personality, before multiple personality disorder became a cause célèbre) into carnivorous beasts. Not literally; they don't sprout hair and fangs and claws like Larry Talbot in "The Wolf Man." But they do take on the characteristics of animals. They lose the power of speech, run around on all fours and hunt in a pack, tearing apart their prey with their teeth. And although they are not together all the time if one comes in contact with a potential victim, all the others telepathically sense what is happening and come running to take part in the attack. It all sounds insane, but Richard Lortz makes it seem plausible and the result is a terrifying horror novel.

This is not a politically correct novel. Its depictions of minorities and homosexuals are bound to offend some people. Still, it's an engrossing, well-written tale.

This reprint, with the silly new title has another new aspect, this one much more effective. The illustration on the cover of a child (its race is not clearly determined), long-haired, wild-eyed, grinning a feral grin with a mouthful of prominent teeth is startlingly scary.

The voice belongs to the born again Russell Gavon, a former high school class mate, who believes God wants him to save Leila from her sinful existence. With this objective, he kidnaps Leila and confines her in an abandoned building. The two engage in a protracted battle of wills, Russell believing Leila's soul is at risk, Leila soon realizing that her very life is what's really at stake. Hampered by worsening eyesight (Russell withholds her medication, believing the Lord will heal her after she comes to her senses) and self-imposed mental obstacles, Leila vacillates between defiance and despair between increasingly desperate escape attempts.

It is somewhat disingenuous to call Slain in the Spirit a horror novel; it is more accurately classified as a suspense novel, psychological thriller or tragedy. While certain aspects of the story can be deemed horrific, the book contains nary a whiff of the supernatural - whatever shivers the novel evokes lie in the characters' reactions to events, and in the way they treat each other and themselves. Still, this is enough, at least for someone with Tem's storytelling talents.

Tem continues her tradition of writing about damaged souls, characters whose personal demons are far more dangerous to their well being than are outside forces. Leila is a curious, almost annoying choice for a heroine. Far from the durable, quick witted protagonist one might expect to encounter in a piece like this (think Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark), Leila is exceedingly passive, almost complacent, at several points in the story even feeling empathy for her deranged captor's skewed point of view. Russell also defies expectations - although he's the villain of the piece, readers begin to feel sorry for this unfortunate man, whose mental illness makes him so dangerous.

Decadent Delight

Fans of high fantasy in the style of Lord Dunsany get a treat in Clark Ashton Smith's The Double Shadow. One of the "big three" writers of pulp fantasy in the 1920's, along with H. P. Lovecraft and Robert Howard, Ashton Smith wrote numerous well-crafted, stylish, and decadent short stories in several series. The six stories in The Double Shadow are independent of these series, but just as stylish as any of the stories in them were.

"The Voyage of King Euvoran," an ironic tale of a king's quest for a missing crown, should please any fan of the Arabian Nights. "The Maze of the Enchanter" is a brooding tale of transfiguration that must have inspired some of the early tales of Jack Vance's Dying Earth. "A Nightfall in Malneant" is a tale of a spiritual journey through despair worthy of Poe himself. "The Devotee of Evil" follows a quest for the source of evil to its ultimate wellsprings of madness. "The Willow Landscape," on the other hand, is a delicately written Chinese fairy tale showing the breadth of Ashton Smith's skill as a writer. The title story, "The Double Shadow," is a masterpiece of dark fantasy, tracing in delicate, poetic, yet malific tones the course of a conjuring of the unknown.

In his work Ashton Smith plumbs all of the dark emotions of a decaying world. Perhaps nowhere else will a devoted reader of fantasy find such variety and value in so small a space as in the collection of six stories published by Wildside Press.

Lyrical, magical, brooding, horrific

I've known about Smith for years from reading Lovecraft, Leiber, Howard, etc, but this was my first experience. You can easily see his kinship with those other geniuses of the weird tale, but his style is his own, from whimsical to dreadful (in a good way :). Highly recommended as an entertaining intro to his work.

Spooky gothic tales

Halloween is right around the corner, so I thought I'd get in the mood by reading a collection of spooky stories by Clark Ashton Smith, a writer and poet who's known for his contributions to the pulp magazine Weird Tales. Smith was a friend of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard and an influence on many of the later pulp writers.

The Double Shadow collects six of Clark Ashton Smith's excellent short stories. You can read each of these at The Eldritch Dark, a website devoted to the writings of Clark Ashton Smith. They have posted the text of most of his stories online either because the story is in the public domain, or with permission from Smith's estate. I don't like to read stories from my computer screen, so I recommend the audio version I listened to by AudioRealms, which was beautifully narrated by Steve Cooper.
