Even though it was only 5 hours, I could not even bring myself to listen that long. Gave up after 1 1/2 hours. The storyline did not hold my attention and the narrator was just horrible. I picked this one based on reviews and was mislead. Might work for some but not me. I think it was about demons but not sure. Like I said this sounded like a podcast actually I've heard better podcast.

Some really good stories here

Most of the stories are quite enjoyable and the writing is engaging. They are mostly vampire stories and the title story is

about an interesting werewolf. Many are cleverly imagined, just a little different. I enjoyed reading the book and will probably look for something else by Wilson.

Zombies for Spain ... a nice change

Narrator Ray Chase reads all characters with a Spanish accent--and it works. Gutsy move, but it does keep you reminded where the story is happening. This is a different type of Z story. There're guns, but they aren't going off constantly. The writing tends to be hit and miss. If your a zombie fan, I think it's worth a credit.

At one point in this book, the author went on and on about Americans failing to help their own people in New Orleans. I do think all of our successes greatly out number or failures. I found myself quote annoyed by his sarcastic point of view.

Love it

Loved it, Spanish zombie apocalypse. Brilliant build up, great character development, you care and are invested in the people. Great twist with a crazy priest and explained well too. It's a great great listen, if you like zombies get it.

What a twisted web we weave....

This series is getting downright convoluted in nature and I mostly get infuriated when stories get too convoluted; it generally reads to me that the author is trying too hard. In this case though... I'll make a huge exception!

The book becomes more and more complex with various twists and turns appearing throughout the title. As soon as you think that you have gotten a good enough grasp of the series something new is introduced which adds a twist to the series but makes it a bit more harder to follow. I find myself feeling sorry for the Talbots, they seem to can't catch a break... With all that being said though, I can't help but be gripped by the entire book... I will see this book through to the end come hell or high water and anyone who has gotten this far in the series would probably agree.

Again this series shine mostly due to the characters whose vantage point we read from. The neurotic germophobe that is Mike Talbot, his formidable and dedicated wife Mrs. Talbot, the loveable Tommy, the dangerous Thomas and the vicious Eliza all brings about their own special touch to the book. Their differing vantage points are fascinating to view from and will have you cracking up or on the edge of your seat with excitement.

The narration gets better with each book I find and Sean Runnette's command of the myriad of characters in the book is note worthy. He's truly gotten a grasp of all the characters in this book and frankly, I wouldn't have the narration done any other way.

The series thus far has been just plain fun to experience, with this one only adding to it. It doesn't take itself too seriously but it isn't a complete joke either. A young crowd will certainly love these books.

P.S. The book once again ends with a cliff hanger....

book 4 starts off where book 3 finished. i like that about this series. mike is at his brother's house. ron shows mike a hidden compartment in his closet that holds info about their great grandfather, dr. hugh mann.

we also learn mike talbot isn't the only one in his family that has come into contact with tomas and eliza. ron shows mikea box that has something of eliza's in it. i'm not going to tell you, you just have to read it.

what do you NEVER do in a scary movie? leave/break up the group. mike decides to leave his family to try to rescue alex, paul, and their group of survivors.

The narrator is not good

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I really tried to listen to this book but the narrator is just soooo annoying he reads so fast it feels like he can't wait to get done with the book. I couldn't stand to listen to the rest of it unfortunately. I had listened to the sample and thought I could get past it but listening to that for to long just ruined it for me. I recommend reading this one, from the little of what I was able to get through it was really interesting, its just the narration that I didn't care for.

the time has gone for this story to be made into a film and there isn't enough material to make it into a series. there is no real hero/heroine to keep it going.

As far as short story collections go I'd rank it in the top 5, though the individual stories, taken in themselves, are some of my favorite listens

What did you like best about this story?

The stories are short, punchy and frightening. It's great to listen to on a ride to work.

Have you listened to any of Randy Capess other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but he has a wide range of characters, and he seems like a very passionate narrator. One of the stories is read by a Veronica something, she does a great job as well.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

FOR AFTER MIDNIGHT - 18 Tales of TRUE TERROR to keep you up at night.

The book is dedicated to the author's fifth grade teacher... I think because he wrote them in her class. Just immature silliness.

Rudimentary at best

I'll compare it to the T.V., show Creepshow and assume the campiness was purposeful. Humor in horror isn't beyond me but some of the stories gave me the distinct feeling the author has a chip on his should about women. This, coming from a woman who loves all kinds of horror. The narration REALLY didn't help. Every female character's voice was affected with the kind of sarcastic, whiney imitation usually reserved for hateful children who mock their parents behind their backs.

The stories were not written well at all! They remind me of stories submitted by first semester creative writing students.

No, I still like the horror/mystery/short story genre. Fortunately, this is the first book I have purchased from Audible that was truly a bad book.

Very nice performance, not so great story

Araminta Palomer is the daughter of an elderly wealthy businessman and his second wife. Minta has been sheltered for all her life, living in the family mansion which is surrounded by high walls and patrolling Doberman Pinschers. She has a governess and is driven to town only rarely for shopping. Because she???s lonely, Minta creates an imaginary friend ??? an egg-shaped furry creature who loves her. Prophetically, she names him Willbe and she imagines him with sharp needle-like teeth because she???s got a really nasty older stepbrother.

At first, Willbe is the perfect companion; he???s warm and furry and sleeps next to Minta at night. The problems start when Willbe begins to manifest as a real creature whenever Minta feels threatened ??? and he???s not afraid to use those teeth. When Minta is kidnapped and Willbe steps in to protect her, the police start asking questions. Most people can???t see Willbe, but the governess, who has spent some time in Tibet, recognizes the creature as a Tulpa. She understands that Minta has summoned the tulpa, but she doesn???t know how to get rid of him, and he???s gradually getting more dangerous as he resists Minta???s control. He racks up several murders by the end of the story.

The Tulpa by Ardath Mayhar, who died this year, is a relatively short novel (168 pages in paperback, 5 hours in audio) that was originally published as The Tulpa: A Novel of Supernatural Horror in 2005 in ebook format. The plot is straightforward and linear ??? there is no divergence from the chronological storyline about Willbe. Since it???s a horror story, some departure or tension relief would have been welcome. The story isn???t particularly scary or gory, it???s just single-minded to a fault.

At first I was confused about Ardath Mayhar???s setting because Araminta???s family is so worried about her being kidnapped, she lives behind high walls, she has a governess instead of going to school, and her mother has been told that reading fiction causes children to become unhealthily fanciful. Then the governess mentions surfing the Internet and it???s clear that the setting is modern U.S.A. This all seemed incongruent to me.

Probably what saved The Tulpa for me was Kate Rudd???s narration of the audiobook version (published by Wildside Press). I have always enjoyed her performances and, though I accused her of being too angsty in the last audiobook I listened to her narrate, I didn???t find that to be a problem here (when she had even more cause to be angsty).
