Brillant!

With over 1100 books downloaded, this book will reign as one of my all-time favorites, easily within the top 3. It's a book with some difficult subjects (i.e. non-consensual m/m & m/f sex) addressed throughout and handled necessarily and to great effect. Surprisingly, it's also a book with no profanity and only sexual innuendos, implied sex, but you get the picture. Though there is no detail, no explicitness provided. It speaks to the brilliance of the author. The dialogue, though often antagonistic, has great wit. It was one of the great joys in the listen. It's a book about power, it misuse & abuse, its development within persons, and its various forms. It's also about personhood in its complexities. It balances depth and warmth with gravity and understanding very rarely experienced in fictional books, IMO. READ IT! I'm off to download another book by this author. I've gotten a new favorite author now too.

Very potent story with many layers, not just sex.

This is a story in which I can loose myself, I want to listen again, crack the bones and suck out the marrow, to find every little touchstone of thought and self within. The sex is only the bit of git around which the oyster builds the beautiful pearl.

This is a HARD story and a POTENT one. It is not a pretty tale, nor a clean one. I cannot stress enough, this is not a story for children or the immature. All that said, it is also a highly satisfying story, while avoiding cliche and the usual sorts of deus-ex machina that is usually employed to bail a writer out of the corners they paint themselves into in blind attempts to show pain and suffering of the main characters.

The story is about growth. About planting seeds and tending them until they germinate and begin to grow, hopefully to thrive. Fertilizing those seeds are harsh trials and terrible -- usually only implied -- details that serve to give depth in what would otherwise be a dull yarn of diplomatic cat&mouse. Thankfully M C A Hogarth spares us this fate.

Admittedly there is cross species BDSM scattered throughout, but the story is not about sex. Those acts are the canvas and paints used brilliantly in lieu of large military conflicts, functioning as weapons-of-choice and battlefield wrapped together. The level of details about the various acts is lacking but in what amounts to an abundance of good taste. It is the means to show the contests and winners in a battle between empire and alliance, against the spirits of the players.

'Even the Wingless' is far more Machiavellian than pornographic. While some of the sexual topics are shared with Anne Rice's 'Claiming of Sleeping Beauty' or E L James's 'Fifty Shades of Grey', it reads as deep as Tolstoy, Milton, or even Dante.

Apt title. Intriguing concept, inept narrator....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Educated narrator, experienced writer, intelligent follow through - any of these would have helped this book. While the concept actually had promise, the author seems to have stopped working beyond this point. The narrator was totally unequipped for reading more than short sentences and completely savaged pronunciation of common words. This premise had possibility. Too bad.

There are many terrific narrators out there who could even pull this off - to a point.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It needs to return to the rejection pile and possibly be pulled apart and completely re-imagined. From there the author could attempt a new effort.

This is a book I would return. I have purchased (thousands?) from Audible and some have been flops while most are terrific 'reads'. I listen to multiple genre but often dip into horror in hopes of finding the rare new book that really chills.

Story is good but audible narration not so much

What made the experience of listening to March Into Hell the most enjoyable?

I have listened to the prequel and book 1 with a different narrator so it was a little disconcerting to hear a "new" voice for "Mark" in book 2 but I got use to it in the first chapter. What I didn't like were the sound effects that went along with the narration. It was weird and I haven't heard anything like it in the hundreds of books I have listened to previously. it makes it sound corny and is distracting from the content of the book. I like the story but I hope the future audibles for this series do not include the sound effects and I hope the original narrator, Daniel Penz, returns, I liked his voice better but that maybe because "he" was "Mark" in the first 2 books I listened to....

Would you be willing to try another one of Lee Alans performances?

Maybe in a different series.

Leave out the sound effects, they detract from the story.

Painful Performance

First let me say that I love this series and thoroughly enjoy Mary McDonald's storytelling and imaginative characters. This is the second audible book from this series.

The performance had me searching for a hard copy so I wouldn't have to listen to the extreme vocal fry of the reader. I even had it playing at 1.25 speed! Add to that the ridiculous sound effects and dated porn music. I almost gave up.

Again, this is a great series but read the Kindle version.

Background noises and music ruined this book!

The contents noise and background music ruined this book for me. The characters / readers voice was not helping it out either.

Loved the first book ...

I enjoyed the first book and this story, but I find the music and dramatic sound effects distracting and unnecessary. The story needed no enhancement.

Beautiful, poignant and yet creepy ghost story

This audiobook captures your attention and pulls at your heart from the very beginning. By the end of the prologue you are already attached to its characters. This ghostly love story, that spans both the past and the present, keeps your attention and draws you along with both its poignancy and its creepiness. The battle, heartache and emotions of fighting cancer and loosing the person you love is expertly and concisely written, breaking your heart for the characters and making you even more invested in them. The author weaves a captivating tale that keeps you turning the pages and has a twist at the end that is very unexpected. The narrator does a great job of bringing the characters to life, creating tension, love, fear and sorrow in all the right parts. It is a very beautiful, poignant yet creepy story that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to. I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Hauntingly Heartwarming!

Would you consider the audio edition of Stillwell to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version, just listened to this version, but having a story read aloud really brings it to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Stillwell?

There are so many great moments in this book! From ghosts, to dreams, to a crazy ending...where would I even start?!

Have you listened to any of Dan McGowans other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to Dan McGowan's Audible version of Monsterland and I actually liked this one better. Maybe it was the lack of too many teenage voices.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The pivotal end scene was POWERFUL! Wow..... I really didn't see that coming and you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there.

Stillwell: A Haunting on Long Island

When I read the product description for Stillwell: A Haunting on Long Island, I wasnt sure if this would turn out to be a ghost story or a love story. Since I enjoy both, I decided to give it a try. The author wrote a beautifully haunting tale of love, loss, grief and acceptance.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased the audio-book version .

I really enjoyed the narrator. Dan McGowan did a remarkable job!

Underdeveloped

What did you like best about Stillwell? What did you like least?

I'd heard this book advertised on the radio and then read a few reviews on amazon touting its fresh approach to an oft visited subject matter. All I can say is this book had very unrealized potential. One particular thing I really disliked (besides the epilogue - if you do listen, do the math on that one) was the way the main character kept revisiting the relevant location. I suppose the author intended him to just be "inexplicably being drawn" but it didn't translate. None of his reasons ever made sense.

I have to wonder if the print Mike Vendetti was reading when this was recorded had any punctuation, because it sounds like he is guessing his way through it!!!I

I am a fan of Audible.com & have at least 10+ books in my library, so I do have a certain level of comprehension. But after listening through almost the entire 1st chapter of this book, I have absolutely no idea what has happened so far!!! It's due to how the narrater drones on & chops apart sentences like there are commas & periods in strange places!!!

How could the performance have been better?

by me purchasing a version with a different narrater!!!

Fun Listen.

What did you like best about Deadly Night: The Murder of Candi Starr? What did you like least?

Let me start off by saying that this type of mystery isn't my favorite and the writing would probably appeal more to the younger generation. However, it was a fun read/listen. It kept me engaged and was definitely more on the funny side. I thought the narrator did a good job with the various voice inflections. All in all, not a bad listen.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It was entertaining and kept me engaged. I thought the various characters were amusing.

Have you listened to any of Daniel H. Vimonts other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I haven't so I don't know how it would compare to anything else he did but I thought that his various "voices" were good and definitely made it easy to tell who was speaking.

Could you see Deadly Night: The Murder of Candi Starr being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I don't know.

I would definately listen to this book over and over. It is one of my favorite Aiden James books and I enjoyed Daniel H. Vimont's vocals.

Im not sure what I would compare the book too. Part of what I enjoy about the book is that it is different from every other ghost story. I love the paranormal aspect and the touch of humor that makes this a really great story.

What does Daniel H. Vimont bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

There is an excitement in Daniel's voice that adds to the excitement in the book. Initially, I thought "it doesnt sound like Jimmy". I had his voice in my mind from reading the book. But the more I listened the more I liked the "feel" Daniel added. I throughly enjoyed him.

If you could rename Deadly Night: The Murder of Candi Starr, what would you call it?

Possibly the alternative name, Ghost Hunters or Paranormal Investigators...

The Ghost Hunter series by Aiden James, is one of my favorites. I love the main characters, Jimmy and Fiona and the story around them is awesome.

An Exciting Prelude to a Larger Story

Would you listen to The Dead Beat, Volume 1 again? Why?

I'd listen to The Dead Beat again, as the world in which it's set is really fascinating. The gritty noir Detective story in a world where "skin-riding" ghosts are a fact of life is really cool. There were all sorts of hints to a bigger mystery scattered throughout these stories and I want to make sure that I caught them all.

What other book might you compare The Dead Beat, Volume 1 to and why?

I haven't ever read a book like it. In form, I'd compare it to an Anime or a modern TV Show like the new Battlestar Galactica. This is a serial of short stories. Each one is a short story, like an episode of BSG, but there's a direct continuity and a larger arc between the stories (like a season or a complete series). This collection almost felt like a pilot mini-series; it's a whole story, but it's really setting the stage for something grand. I can't wait to hear the next volume, when it's released!

What about Daniel Dorses performance did you like?

Daniel Dorse's performance was spectacular. He created the archetypal chain smoking noir detective, his deep gravely voice rumbling along and really contributing to a great ambiance. I wish the "performance" rating were more granular. I'd give his reading a 5 star rating, but the post-production could use some work. There were some volume discrepancies, especially once between stories where I had to jump and turn down the volume dramatically, as the gain on the recording seemed to be suddenly much higher.

If you could rename The Dead Beat, Volume 1, what would you call it?

"The Dead Beat" is a perfect title.

This collection is a little short, but at less than a matinee movie ticket it's well worth the price. I found myself smiling, laughing and cringing along with the characters, all the while being sucked into the life of a police exorcist. I can't wait for more.

New & Refreshing Were Story That's a Must Read!

As a fan of anything paranormal, I was very excited to read this wonderful work by Lazo. In the paranormal genre, the werewolf has been written about time and time again, but Lazo has managed to create a twist to the werewolf I've never read before. It is one of pure creative genius.

I commend Lazo for his use of description, action, and creativity. This novel will not only provide a great read, but it will leave you considering your own beliefs in terms of love, hate, despair, fear, and darkness. The philosophical thoughts that come from The Terrible Man, the Other One, and the Priests Bryan and Innocensius, will have you pondering many of your own thoughts and beliefs. It's fascinating to see Lazo's use of emotions such as hate, anger, loss, and despair, to create a story line that proves to be one that is a page-turner.

I would recommend this work of art to anyone that likes reads filled with adventure, the paranormal, demonic creations, and self-serving kings. As I read the last page, I could not help wondering if there will be a sequel. It leaves you hanging, imagining what could possibly be coming next.
