Noah and Caddys harrowing adventures

Noah returns from prior books continuing his travels back to Portland. Running afoul of escaped prisoners on their way to the big house his travels are cut short once again. He is rescued by and makes friends with Caddy a fellow survivor. Noah hears of a safe haven checkpoint where the military provides food, lodging, and safety. The story proceeds to chronicle Noah and Caddys harrowing adventures as they travel together. Good story, interesting and likable characters. Im looking forward to book six, Sanctuary.

Good follow-up but not as good as other books

This book didn't engage me as much as the other books in the series did. It was still a good listen to while away some time.

What other book might you compare The Grinding to and why?

It's definitely strongly sci-fi, a little graphic and it has some supernatural elements, with a (slightly unbelievable, but nevertheless fun) twist. So I would compare this story to Chuck Palahniuck, or Richard Matheson stories, but aimed at a younger, less sophisticated audience than Matheson.

Have you listened to any of Chris Sorensens other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have never listened to this narrator before. I found that his characters' voices were very slightly different from his own. So slight that, were the book to have more dialogue and less written explanations of who was talking, I may have had trouble following. That being said, I don't believe I had trouble discerning them on too many occasions.

Overall enjoyable, not too heavy or much thought required. Good for a beach listen, or for a young (fifteen and up) audience.

Great Horror book

Hard to stop listening because I wanted to know what would happen next in the plot. It has lots of up and downs, twists and turns, and it made my heart jump. It was everything that you look for in a book that would make such an epic scary movie. I loved the ending .

action packed, fast moving adventure

The Grinding by Matt Dinniman is action packed, fast moving adventure that screams sci-fi and aliens. However, that would be a false assumption. Dinniman sets the story up for the reader to reach that conclusion early on so that when one reaches the truth behind The Grinder, one cannot help but sit there gape-mouthed and stunned. I was truly not expecting this huge, really huge twist!

The main characters are Adam, Niff and The Grinder. This is not a tale about the military although they do play a small role. This is a tale about Adam and his relationship with his wife Niff and his blossoming relationship with The Grinder. It is a first-hand accounting of the experiences of one man against The Grinder. Dinniman does an excellent job of keeping the information flowing but keeping the stunning revelation for the right moment. Personally, Im not so sure I would take on such a huge monster to save my spouse Adams undying love and dedication to his wife is amazing. His struggles and growth builds a strong connection to the reader. I was really hoping he would make it and rescue his wife and the world.

Mediocre Zombie Outing

I've read and listened to many zombie books. You could say I'm addicted to the genre. That said, Rain was disappointing. The narrator did not fit my auditory picture of a young video gamer turned zombie apocalypse survivor and his attempts to convey excitement or tension seemed shrill and unconvincing to me.

The interaction between the characters was often jarring. The narrator Alex is pathetically grateful to his friend Mike the jock for allowing him to be his friend and Mike usually acts like a jerk and gets away with it. Then we have to hear the horny adolescent fantasies of Alex regarding Lucy (one of two girls he and Mike are on a hike with at the beginning of the book). Lucy and Elena (the two girls) never really emerge as characters; they exist to illustrate the emotional ups and downs of the two boys (we can't really call them men).

The plot follows the usual conventions of the genre. The four main characters exhibit initial disbelief followed by descent into social chaos followed by randomized killing (zombie and otherwise) and the death of a major character or two, and at the end, the set-up for the next book. The characters often behave stupidly but that's much S.O.P. for a zombie novel (and the horror genre as a whole for that matter).

Bottom line: if you're a zombie apocalypse fan and you enjoy reading about geeky, socially awkward young post-adolescents who get the girl in the end, you'll probably like this book.

even though it was not an extraordinary performance for a book I still enjoyed it an easy read and a good zombie book.

I Thought This Book Would Never End! Hated it!

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This story could have been told in 10 chapters at the most but it dragged on for 30 endless chapters that were boring and entirely too detailed. I had guessed the end by the first few chapters. The narrator was quite good. He sounded like Jude Law but the story just got on my nerves. Ugh. Save your money!

Extremely slow and disappointed

Struggled to finish this book as I kept expecting more to happen or there to be some black magic or mischief involved. The ending felt rushed and not complete with holes in the storyline. I wouldn't recommend.

Fabulous!

I really enjoy most of Mark Edwards' books. He has a knack for stunning anticipation and making his readers panic- as in 'What's going on??' or 'What will happen next??' Edwards keeps us guessing, and sometimes the most obvious things aren't that obvious, but sometimes they are- so you just never know!

A new couple moves into what seems to be their dream flat- but although their neighbours appear very kind at the beginning, things start to spiral out of control and soon the couple is living their lives in fear and suspense of what their neighbours will do next. But- is it the neighbours that are driving them mad- or is it someone else?

This book is full of terrifying tension and it's very hard to put down. I became enraptured in the story and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I strongly recommend the Magpies to someone who likes a great thriller- but a masterful writer of suspense.

Magpies is a better psychological thriller than I suspected. There are some crazy people.

Stressful thriller

A couple buys a flat, meets their neighbors, and hangs with them. Everything seems fine, they all get along donthey? Apparently not. Read The Magpies and youll find out why.

Im not sure how to review this novel. In the end, I liked it. It was getting to the end that was unusual for me. I am used to horror/thriller novels that are in your face, obviously some stuff is about to go down, type of feeling.

Interesting take on Vampire lore

the short story is a different perception of turning into a vampire. instead of people willingly submitting to a beautiful existence as an eternal creature of the night, the people who are turned in this story are all suffering and have to choose between eternal misery or a death they must request. They all gather in the same bar and watch each other struggle with the life-or-death decision to submit and let the vampire who bit them have his way with them or to struggle against the crushing need to do so.

Weird Menace for Kindle!

I've been waiting for this a long time: classic "weird menace" pulp horror stories collected for Kindle. Prior to this, one had to either collect the fragile, costly originals or the expensive replicas that are great but not terribly convenient for on-the-go reading. Now that I can read these ghastly shudder pulp stories on my Kindle I can do so anywhere at anytime. Plus, if I'm on a treadmill at the gym I can have my Kindle read them to me in its coldly mechanical but otherwise serviceable voice. I've downloaded every volume available so far, including this one, and the price is very reasonable. If you enjoy pulp fiction you should give Terror Tales a try.

Readers may be put off by the overt sexism in many stories here, but if you look beyond that and enjoy the atmospheric two-fisted style, you can have a lot of fun.

Sometimes the underdog wins

There are characters you read about who stay with you for a long time. Characters who find strength to do amazing deeds through sheer guts and willpower.

Janie is one of these characters. Beaten, abused, derided, there are only two things that matter to her more than life itself. Her children. The journey she undertakes to protect her children will move you to tears.

There is much ugliness in this novel. Much that is disturbing. But there is also much that will leave you cheering for the underdog. You feel her confusion, her goodness and her love. Pitted against evil she does not comprehend, Janie struggles to find a way to survive.

The supenatural elements, including the very strange Red Indian folklore, cast a shadow like a shroud across the story.

This book is surprising and, oddly for a horror story, inspiring.

I loved it.

Wow!

I was expecting this to be just a quick read about the traumas of abuse, thought I would just have a quick look, but from the first chapter I was hooked! I couldn't put it down, I got pretty emotional in a few parts, and I had to see what happened next. I can't wait for his next book to come out!

wow, not what I expected!

I needed to clear space on my kindle, so I tried to delete the horror genre (just not in the mood ). Could not delete this one. Started reading and finished in less than a day. I loved it! The characters were well drawn, Janie rang true, the ability to block out her past, her loyalty, her love for her children. On second thought, the horror is too true - taking advantage of others, greed, powermadness, this is more true than the walking dead, Jason, or Elm St.

A Unique Native American Ghost Thriller

I've loved horror books since my early teens, and that was quite a while ago now!

The authors painstaking attention to medical terminology in the early parts of this book really help to convey the confusion the protagonist is experiencing in her situation. The well researched scenarios and characters continue throughout the riveting story, which I had to finish in one sitting.

Not for the faint of heart, this supernatural adult thriller had me gripped from start to finish.

fast paced

this book was fast paced but i did find it repetitive in dialoug. the premise was a good one but more detail to background on the darker parts of the book would have been appreciated. i understood the point and thought it was an unusual way to make it. more character developement all around would have been welcome. thanks for writing the book and good luck in future.

Horror, Vampires, Ghosts, and a witch--enjoy!

A bed and breakfast with a Civil War cemetery haunted by a vampire/witch who is out of her time. Story moves along smoothly and characters are clear and strong. One might also call it a historical romance with a chilling twist!

BLA is an audio performer who shows his ability to delineate the characters well.

Didn't care for the narration

I thought this was a good book, but I think that listening to the audio hampered my enjoyment a bit. I listened to the Audible audio version, but I had a hard time with the narrator because he sounded very stilted (almost robotic), all the female characters sounded the same, and his pronunciation of words like "escape" as "excape" bugged me. I don't I think I will actively search out books by this narrator again. The story itself sounded really interested. There were ghosts, magic, and vampires. I like the idea of a civil war vampire feeding on entire battlefields, but falling in love, trying to change herself, and that love surviving the ages. It has the makings of a good story, but I just couldn't enjoy it as much with the narration. Maybe I'll give it another try on my Kindle.

Interesting, Engaging Read!!

This audio book turned out to be a bit different than I expected. My expectations of a Civil War based story rapidly turned into a lot of Vampire/Ghost/Thriller. But I enjoyed it!!

I liked the bed and breakfast setting. The author did a tremendous job of fully developing secondary characters that were guest at Willowwind.

Even though, it was definitely outside my preferred genre I found it to be a page turner. It was an interesting and engaging read.

The audio narration was definitely an asset to the reading experience.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an interesting take on a vampire themed book. Witchcraft, ghosts and the civil war....a not so bad combo. The characters were well drawn out and likeable. My only issue is the narrator. He actually did a good job with the exception of the female characters. He actually made supposedly intelligent women seemed dull-witted. It almost made it a bit difficult for me to continue listening but I'm glad I did.

Good stories and well done.

This volume is comprised of three separate stories of survivors during the zombie apocalypse. Rune a traveling biker who also has the ability to see and speak to ghosts is caught in the upheaval of the zombie apocalypse. Rune was a decent man and he used his ability to communicate with the dead to resolve the wrongs done to them and let them rest in peace. Senator Brightman was one conceited, arrogant, pompous a$$well, she was a politician after all. True to form she left the other survivors on their own in her attempt to reach a safer environment. Perhaps she may reap what she sows as her security team abandons her for brighter shores. The third story is a sad tale of a woman caught in the escalating apocalypse not knowing the condition of her young son who was visiting her ex. It takes her more than a year, but eventually finds her son. Good stories and well done.

OMG - everything!!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

RUNE!!!! It was absolutely fantastic to hear his story - it gave his character from the trilogy so much more depth. Even though I already loved his character, this solidified how I felt and more. Wish there was more of him!!!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed. I felt sad.

I did feel cranky when the second story was about the Senator, but what the heck, she has a story too - I really did feel it added more knowing this about her.
