Nice change of pace as I read all things dark tower

I'm currently reading through the dark tower series, including some of the books that tie into it. Before this I had just read:

Salems lot

The gunslinger

The drawing of the three

The stand

I've liked each book so far, but this one was very different from the others. The book is told as a bit of a fairy tale, with the narrator stopping to comment on the story, teasing what will happen next and asking you to stop and think about how you would feel if you found yourself in the story.

I very much enjoyed the narration, and while the story was simple, it was a short and pleasant change of pace.

While the book does tie in strongly with a character found in other king books, you don't need to have read anything else before this one.

If you're like me and still early on your journey through all things dark tower, I think you'll look back on this one as a nice little side vacation.

A Great Place to Start

If you haven't read Stephen King and you've been meaning to start, this would be an excellent book for you. It's also appropriate for younger readers. Featuring a villain familiar to anyone who's seen or read The Stand, or The Dark Tower series, this story stands alone and is a favorite of many of King's constant readers. Fans of Ronnie James Dio, and Game of Thrones should enjoy this.

King pulls a Tolkien

Eyes of the Dragon is Steven King's first departure from Horror into the realm of Epic Fantasy. It is different from King's standard fair and I admit I only picked this up because the book's principal antagonist, Randal Flagg, later reappears in King's Dark Tower series. That said, I was very impressed with what I found here. Eyes of the Dragon is fantastic and stands as a great novel all on its own.

Also, Bronson Pinchot's narration is absolutely terrific. The echo he uses when voicing the dark wizard Flagg is particularly bone chilling. Highly recommended!

Wow

I don't believe I've ever before heard a narrator so good that I could, as they say, listen to him read the phone book. That it's Bronson Pinchot, who I've known for his many well-remembered silly-voiced characters is amazing. I'm going to go and look for more that he's done.

inner. Listen to it with your children.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. While this book started slowly, as the story progressed, I became more interested in the characters, why they were in the reversion, and hiw they were connected. This was an interesting "study" on second chances.

What did you like best about this story?

The psychological development of the characters as they try to figure out why they are in the reversion and why they have a second chance.

Have you listened to any of David H. Lawrence XVIIs other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first time listening to David. He has a pleasant voice. The varying voices for the characters were subtle but distinctive. I would definitely listen to him again.

Samuel was the most memorable character. He was "teachable," able to learn from his experiences.

Im not a huge horror fan but I do read J Thorn's books...I love them. This book is very well narrated an written. I didnt find this story "scary" persay I think it is more of a "play with your mind" creepy. The characters are easy to know an understand an I enjoyed listening to how they handled the issues that came up for them. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to take a day an spend it in the mind of an brilliant author....

Interesting!

An interesting tale in a creepy world. As the tale unfolds, you're dragged along with the characters as they try to figure out how to get out of their predicament. Many things happen, some are explained, some are not, in the end you want to get the next novel.

Awesome!!!

Very creepy and very unpredictable! I tried to unravel the story as I went along but couldn't. It kept me on the edge of my seat as I listened tying to piece it all together. Excellent story and great narration! Looking forward to he rest of the series!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eye of the Storm: Eilida's Tragedy?

This psychological paranormal thriller, is a tale with mystery and intrigue. Told through the viewpoint of two different individuals, just when you think you have an inkling what the link between them might be another surprise comes out of nowhere, drawing you deeper and deeper into this bizarre tale. A bizarre horror story

I am quite a wide read woman, and I like to think Ive seen most and now am learning to hear most. AudioBooks are a new way for me to read. And I really enjoy listening while Im driving.

I was not totally sold on the narrator here, I thought she read far too young for the character Elida and Sunshine. I know that Sunshine is supposed to be innocent, and young in mind, but she holds a good job, has a nice boyfriend who proposes. But, the whole happy and go lucky for this character was a little over the top for me. I couldnt relate with her at all because of this and the overtly young narrator for it.

I did however not mind Elida as a character (even though she too sounded much younger than I honestly think she should have). She had flaws and of course is the reason for all the psychological storyline. There are lots of questions.

All in all, the story had many twists and turns, and although the beginning with the proposal wasnt quite for me. I do think listening to the story in full is essential. The author does bring the elements of thriller, psychological in much more towards the end. And its more enjoyable. Just takes a good amount of time to get into. There are some awkward phrasings, and use of crutch words, but I can forgive those because the ending is worth it.

Decent, But Not Excellent

I'm a little at odds with myself in regards to this book. It was definitely entertaining enough to keep me attentive, but I wouldn't say that it was anything like a great work of literary genius.

The book starts with the owner of a small coffee shop in Denver. One morning while serving customers, the coffee shop and everyone in it are transported back in time to an era filled with jungles and dinosaurs. I thought the concept was interesting, but a little cheesy.

Most of the story read like Jurassic Park or the Lost World, but not quite as well thought out.

Most of the characters were very predictable, stereotypical, and one-dimensional.

Also, the ending was practically a rip-off from the second Jurassic Park movie...

Narration was top notch, despite the story.

Having said all of that, I did enjoy this book, but probably won't re-listen like I do most of my audiobooks...

Good story, but some parts were akward and cringy

the overall story was pretty good. the only criticism i have is the constant talk of a cetain characters erection and urges. it was completely out of place and random from the whole story.

Good but lacks some bite

Those of you who follow my reviews will know that I have a crazy lust for all things zombies and of course my not so secret man crush on all things Mr Keith C Blackmore. Yes, I know it isnt normal! You would also know that I dont often visit outside my zombie genre. But I thought a change is as good as a holiday and plunged in and purchased this title along with The Jurassic Dead.

If you know the title The Jurassic Dead then you would know that it involves zombie dinosaurs plus other 'extras'. So this title The Dinosaur Four would have to be a pretty amazing in every detail or a story so full of wild amazing ideas, or it would be destined for trouble.

I did enjoy the story itself, it just wasnt long enough or complex enough, or believable! Not that the idea of time travel is believable I just didnt find the characters believable or even likeable enough to care.

The time travel idea certainly interest me and did cause me to listen to this one in just over two days. But the time travel thing. was not enough and left me thinking that it had some glaring problems. For example, if time travel was/is possible the author didnt really take into factor the location problem Lets say the cafe moved 63 million years into the past. The location of the cafe would be totally different. The earths location would be different.

I found that I enjoyed the first one more

This is the second book in the series and it jumps right in. It is definitely advisable to start with the first one. I found that I enjoyed the first one more. This book seemed to have too much going on with aliens and a bad magician to make any sense. Too many repetitive phrases, especially with Harry protesting his innocence the entire novel. Very jumbled and I would not recommend. Sorry!

Fantasy with many lives in the balance...

Would you listen to What Remains of Heroes again? Why?

Absolutely. I have connected the dots now and would love to see the depth again with a new view. Andrew makes the story easy to follow with different voices and tones. And there is so much happening in the world.

What did you like best about this story?

We have many great things found in fantasy in one place. Assassins, successful assassins. A journey adventure with dangers in the path. Gods of powers. Greedy men who think nothing other than having power and control. A bloodline in danger of becoming extinct, and the dangers that come from that. All are weaved together in events happening. All are surfacing and influenced to do as the evil long hidden in shadows wants done.

Have you listened to any of Andrew Tells other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my second book with Andrew as the narrator and he has done an amazing job with this book. I'm impressed! He starts this story with a strong feel, like the world is strong and harsh and we need to feel that along with the words. Instantly we get different voice tones and personalities as the story opens in a tavern, and troubles brew. Andrew even *spits* as he acts out the action of a character. I really enjoyed Andrew's acting and voice variation to each character.

Any additional comments?

There are many characters here and I felt I got a lot of feel and story for each one. Lannick has me curious early on. It seems he's someone, or was someone, special for things in the past. But there is also great sorrow there too. General Fane reminds me a touch of Glokta from The First Law series. He's one we love to hate. Acolyte Bale is a member of the Sanctum and gives us a view with more descriptions regarding the magic of things and the history of the Sentinels and the High Kings. Karnag gives us the assassin view and something new as well. Fencress is also an assassin, but a true friend willing to help another. These views are all different sides and gives us the full view of the troubles and evils of the world as it starts to crumble around them.

This was a story I really enjoyed. The world is dangerous and each character is doing their best under the terrible circumstances to survive and take care of things on their list. Blood, gods, magic, and turmoil. The writing style is easy to follow and know who is who and where they are.

4 Out of 5 Ain't Bad

I was given a review copy of Dark Screams Volume 3 in exchange for an honest review. Once again, we have an eclectic mix of stories and authors in Dark Screams Volume 3.

First up is Peter Straub, with âThe Collected Stories of Freddie Prothero.â What has happened to the Peter Straub I admired so much for Ghost Story, Shadowland and Floating Dragon? This story is a mess...nothing but gibberish. So sad.

Next is âGroup of Thirtyâ by Jack Ketchum. This is quite a change of pace for Mr. Ketchum. Jonathan Daniels is a horror author who is asked to speak at a Sci-Fi book club gathering in front of about thirty Sci-Fi enthusiasts. He figures what the hell could happen? He was very wrong...

âNancyâ by Darynda Jones features Nancy, who lives in âAmericaâs Most Haunted City,â Renfield. She claims to be being followed by some kind of ghost. As a result, she is bullied by other students. What follows is a very good ghost story.

âI Love You, Charlie Pearsonâ by Jacqueline Frank. Charlie Pearson is in love with Stacey Wheeler. Who isnât? But, he has not told her because she already has a big and burly football playing boyfriend. But Charlie knows she is better off with him. Stacey is a cheerleader who is failing Math. Charlie offers to tutor her for the upcoming midterm, just to get her alone with him and to convince her that she is in love with him. This was probably my favorite story in this collection. Nice twist at the end.

Last is âThe Lone One and Level Sands Stretch Far Awayâ by Brian Hodge. Marni is a new neighbor who is perfect and in shape. Aidan joins her and her friends in running and urban exploration. They explore abandoned building before they are torn down. He soon finds that some things are not meant to be discovered or forgotten, once seen. I enjoyed this one quite alot.

Once again, Dark Screams Volume 3 is a solid entry in the Dark Screams series. I am looking forward to Volume 4.

Third One and Still Strong

I wanted to give 5 stars but I would say that this gets 4.4. This collection was better than the last one, in my opinion.

Pretty Bad

The story line here is pretty typical zombie junk. It centers around an elite "Shadow" military team, more skilled than Navy Seals. Except they're all idiots. Lots of silly mistakes included in order to create tension, I understand some of that is necessary, but an elite force wouldn't make such huge mistakes such as what is included in Twice Dead, which made it hard to swallow.

I really didn't think I would love this but I did. I just wish it was longer! sucked me in right away narrator was fantastic. the author had written other novels in this series but they're not in audio yet! ! please put them in audio form! ! I'm a Patient Zero fan and also liked day by day Armageddon of they let's you know my tastes. I also like Diana Rowland but thats not zombie. anyway. the book is great the main character is assertive and I really need to hear more! !!

This story has promise

Confucius says: A great narrator can make an OK book GREAT.

BUT, a poor narrator can make a great book bad and can kill an mediocre book.

Unfortunately this book had 2 strikes against it.

1) A poor narrator

2) It suffers from "Lack of Editing"

BUT, this story line is very good, so there could still be hope for the series. I need to see if book 2 is available and if improvements were made before I continued with it.

I have friends who are authors and their first books that were published had some very rough edges, so I'd like to give this author the benefit of the doubt and hope he found a *better* editor AND narrator with some emotion in his voice.

Been done better before

Special Forces Black Ops team given the mission to recover the lead scientist and/or the hard drive containing the research results from a government lab on the east coast. The team leader unwisely decides to take on an unexpected side mission to save a bunch of civilians from an infested town. By the time their done half the team and half the civilians are down. Now the team lead wants to pursue the original mission with half a team, but they have to escape from their now surrounded current location. The book finishes with a hopeful escape plan and a lead-in to book two. Not a bad story, but its been done better before. The characters are not bad either, but I never feel the care and concern I should for them. I doubt I will dip my toes in the water for book two. Three.point.five for the effort.

Stunning author read offering!

Would you consider the audio edition of Interference to be better than the print version?

Didn't read print version, but OMG this is a REMARKABLE first book AND it is, quite simply, the BEST author read book I have ever listened to.

Eric Luke has 2 remarkable careers ahead of him. Namely, as a fiction writer and as one of the best voice artists I have come across in a long time.

What did you like best about this story?

Everything. Every aspect of this book is well crafted. The characters are authentic, their actions are logical, their thought processes and responses real, and the reading is ideal.

Which scene was your favorite?

Description of the seedier side of Hollywood was great.

Who was the most memorable character of Interference and why?

Difficult to pick one out , as they are all wonderful. I think Hank was the most memorable, simply because of the complexity of his large story arc. They are all wonderful.

Easily top 10 audiobook I have listened to. If you get one book or have one credit left, get this one.

Seriously, it is that good, and I listen to alot of books.

Oh, and Eric Luke, if you are reading this, WELL DONE and get at the next one! I can hardly wait!

The apocalypse is here, and it's awesome

What a phenomenal continuation to the series! James retains his status as one of the most fascinating narrators/protagonists I've ever encountered -- although, really, how can you compete with a thirty-something guy who runs around with an extra-dimensional psychopathic alien living in his head? And the plot is just so fun -- wicked creepy, yes, but fun nonetheless! As always, Burnett doesn't pull punches -- the stakes are literally apocalyptic, bad things happen to good people, bad things happen to bad people, and awesome things happen every single page. Read it! You'll love it, I guarantee.

Urban Fantasy with a Twist...At It's BEST

âAnd they all lived happily ever afterâ is not how Gingerbread Wolves ends, but Iâm not going to tell you how it did end. People/things died, lives were changed, new developments developedâI was captivated from the start once again.

The forth book of the Lost Doors series by Misha Burnett was another amazing ride. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline is dark, but in a good, highly enjoyable way.

The storyline for this forth book is a bit more âtrippyâ than the others. I really had to concentrate on parts of the book. Not that this was detrimental to my reading experience; no, Iâd say it enhanced it and made it more enjoyable. The level of sophistication Burnett writes with amazes me. When the main characters descend upon Zenithâthe descriptions really make you think.

As a whole, I liked the way this part of the story ended. I wonât give anything away, as I donât like spoilers, but the ending left me feeling complete with the storyline thus far, but anxious for the next installmentâit was a great balance between a great ending and a new beginning.

I highly recommend this story and the previous three to anyone that wants to enjoy a wonderful, yet slightly twisted tale. Urban Fantasy with a Twist at itâs BEST.

Burnett does modern Lovecraft better than anybody working in the business today

An epic conclusion to this four volume series. Burnett does modern Lovecraft better than anybody working in the business today, and the long slow buildup to this book makes the wait worthwhile. Everything else was just putting the chess pieces in place for this final chapter that ends with a cosmic bang.

Misha Burnett continues to take us on a fascinating journey into an unusual world where things may not be as they seem. He has a real knack for developing complex characters who are faced with consequences making the read most interesting and unpredictable.
