Turns out Billy Joel was wrong and even though he's been off the charts since the 90's no one's forgotten his name and he's never been in the discount rack. Today we are discussing the song, The Entertainer. An absolute classic. And we really get into it. The lyrics are amazing and rhyme like it's nobody's business. The Entertainer is the first song off the second side of 1974's Streetlife Serenade album and went to number 34 on the charts all the way back in 1975. AND, even though you've gotta cut the song down to 3:05 - it's 3:21. But that's alright, those 16 extra seconds are pretty great.

If you're just finding our podcast, this could be one of the songs you scroll down to checkout first (mostly to find out why it wasn't in the "Ds"). The Downeaster Alexa is an extraordinary Billy Joel song from his later catalogue and was released May 5, 1990 from the Storm Front album. It is the sea shanty Billy had been waiting to make for 11 albums and he did a pretty great job. It's a terrific song and we've got lots to say about it. Especially, that line about "I've got bills to pay and children who need booze". Or maybe we heard it wrong. Tune in to find out.

Well -- here we go. The long awaited songs that not only start with "T" but the word "THE". And we open with an absolute classic in The Ballad of Billy the Kid. The Ballad of Billy the Kid is the final song off of side one of Piano Man released November of 1973 AND appears again, of course, on Songs in the Attic. From a town known as Oyster Bay Long Island comes Billy the Kid yet apparently, it's NOT about Billy Joel. What does he take us for?!!

I read the news today, Oh boy -- Apparently Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley are an item. Or at least they certainly were one of the most popular news stories when this episodes song came out entitled, That's Not Her Style. That's Not Her Style is the first song off of the Stormfront Album and was released as a single on August 4, 1990. While the media may think Christie jets across the country and "wines and dines with Argentines and Kuwaitis," she is actually much more down to earth -- so Billy says. Hmmm.

Believe it or Not. . . Our Greatest American Hero also writes about his kid sometimes. Turns out this song is about that and NOT Christie Brinkley as everyone ASSumed in the 80s when this came out. Another "classic" from The Bridge Album, Temptation. It's not a song anyone remembers and for any other musician, this probably would have been a hit, but when you're Billy Joel and you're a hit factory. . . . Still, they're all fun to discuss so listen in. 😀

Recorded clearly in the 80's and could have been completely sung by Daryl Hall, this song is, in Dave's opinion, awesome and in Elon's opinion, just ok. Usually the consensus goes with Elon so. . . I guess it's your turn to decide.

This was Billy's second number one hit. He would only have one more in his illustrious career and the weird part is. . . he chooses never to play this happy, peppy, fun song in concert anymore.
