  • Binary System Podcast #194 – WTNV #155 “The Heist Part 3”
You can listen to this episode on our Binary System Podcast channel at Anchor.fm!
This week we recap the final episode of “The Heist” storyline, and the whole thing wrapped up neatly although NOT THE WAY WE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO. Geez, Night Vale writers, give us a heart attack why don’t you…
Believe it or not, the recap only takes up the first ten minutes of this podcast. The rest is a We Can’t Stop Digressing special as we talk about the new Picard trailer (practical makeup versus digital effects), the new season of Peaky Blinders (they haven’t brought back Alexander Siddig’s character and we’re not happy about it), Carnival Row (the show should really consult with some furries about the best way to make digitigrade legs), and Elizabeth’s trip to California Adventure Park (did YOU know George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch has a winery?)

This week’s outro music is a clip from Crescents by Ketsa.
Correction: We spent so much time talking about how much we liked this week’s Weather that we forgot to say what it was. It’s “Good Luck with That” by Fathom All the Animals.

  • Binary System Podcast #193 – More Horror Movies
October’s here so it’s time once again for Binary System to go over our list of Favorite Horror Movies and scare ourselves silly. Two years ago we had a conversation with Hannah about our go-to movies, and last year we talked about The Cell and As Above So Below, so this year we’re talking about The Thing from Another World (the 1951 version), Crimson Peak, The Wicker Man (the 1973 version), Angel Heart, 28 Days Later, Paranormal Activity, and Pitch Black.
And then we went off on a ton of tangents as we listed movies that aren’t great but have parts you should fast forward to (Prophesy for Christopher Walken, and Amityville Horror for Ryan Reynolds’ abs), debated on whether or not having vampires in it makes it horror, wondered whether or not Christopher Eccleston has really and truly made his peace with Doctor Who, and briefly touch on Carnival Row (pretty!) and Jessica Jones season three (…darnit…)

This week’s outro music is Synthwave E by TeknoAxe.

The article where Cara Delevingne explains why she uses an Irish accent in Carnival Row is here. (Short version: it made sense to her, especially since so much about fairies comes from Irish folklore. Also because she just likes the accent.)
The artist who inspired several of the images in The Cell is Odd Nerdrum.
If you want even more horror movie goodness on Pixelated Geek, you should check out The Spookeasy Podcast.
You can read about the Frances, the 1926 building Elizabeth lived in when she was in Asheville, in this article. (There’s no mention of it being a former nunnery, so that might be a myth.)
Correction: Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury is the animated one and YES it’s animated by Peter Chung, who also did Æon Flux.
Correction #2: that moment long after you watch something when you realize a plot point didn’t make sense is called Fridge Logic, not a Fridge Moment. (It’s sometimes called a Jellybean Moment, after a Harlan Ellison story, so that’s where we mixed up the name.)
Not really a correction but HOLY COW, somebody archived the entire IMDB forums. Here’s the one for “Angel Heart”; enter at your own risk.

  • Binary System Podcast #192 – WTNV #154 “The Heist Part 2”
On this week’s Night Vale recap WE ARE NOT FANS of the Secret Police’s behavior lately NO SIR THIS WILL NOT END WELL.
After the recap we also get into a little more of Carnival Row, Stranger Things Season 3, and The Good Place Season 3. Then Kathryn talks about Terry Moore’s Five Years, and Elizabeth talks about The Wicked + The Divine finale (with no spoilers. And there will continue to be no spoilers because Kathryn hasn’t read it yet. AND SHE NEEDS TO.)

Elizabeth would like to apologize for the INCREDIBLY ANNOYING thumping on her track, the building management was stomping around on the roof, at 7pm on a Sunday night. Because OF COURSE THEY WERE.

  • Binary System Podcast #190 – WTNV #152 “The Great Golden Hand”
It’s that time of year we like to call “The BSP Post-Vacation Catchup,” and if we were smart we would’ve recapped two episodes of Night Vale this week and been all caught up! We’re not that smart.
As of the time this episode drops, the NC branch of Binary System Podcast is hunkered down and waiting for Hurricane Dorian to go AWAY already. Coincidentally, this week we’re recapping a Night Vale episode that’s all about a (cue reverb) GREAT GOLDEN HAND that’s reaching over the horizon to cover the entire town. If you’re in the path (of the hurricane or the latest Night Vale weirdness) stay safe, and make sure you’re stocked up on human hair.

  • Binary System Podcast #189 – Black Mirror “Bandersnatch”
Yes we finally did it! We…what? Oh, no we didn’t watch How To Train Your Dragon 3. We watched the Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch, which has technically been out longer so at least we’re going in order? Yay?
Heads up: ALL the spoilers for this one, since this episode was so much weirder than we thought it’d be, and we thought it’d be weird.
After that we talk about our trip to the NC mountains, and discuss which is the best Old Tyme Photo place in Gatlinburg. (Hint: it’s not the one where the photographer was hungover.)

The Forbes article “Can You Actually ‘Win’ Black Mirror’s ‘Bandersnatch’ With A Good Ending” has a lot of great insights on the episode.
We went to the Old Tyme Portraits By Treadway in the Gatlinburg Mountain Mall; there’s at least four of them in the area but this was the one we really, really liked. This photo is why:
