  • Binary System Podcast #189 – Black Mirror “Bandersnatch”
You can listen to this episode on our Binary System Podcast channel at Anchor.fm!
Yes we finally did it! We…what? Oh, no we didn’t watch How To Train Your Dragon 3. We watched the Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch, which has technically been out longer so at least we’re going in order? Yay?
Heads up: ALL the spoilers for this one, since this episode was so much weirder than we thought it’d be, and we thought it’d be weird.
After that we talk about our trip to the NC mountains, and discuss which is the best Old Tyme Photo place in Gatlinburg. (Hint: it’s not the one where the photographer was hungover.)

This week’s outro music is a clip from Nebula Rush by Florian Decros.
The Forbes article “Can You Actually ‘Win’ Black Mirror’s ‘Bandersnatch’ With A Good Ending” has a lot of great insights on the episode.
We went to the Old Tyme Portraits By Treadway in the Gatlinburg Mountain Mall; there’s at least four of them in the area but this was the one we really, really liked. This photo is why:

  • Binary System Podcast #188 – Start With This Podcast “Towards A Poor Podcast”
This week we’ve got a quick recap of the Start With This Podcast episode “Towards A Poor Podcast.” No, it’s not “poor” as in “bad,” it’s “poor” as in “broke.” It’s about creating fiction on a budget, basically; writing what you know and what you’ll be able to produce using the resources at hand. Naturally, this is very pertinent to our interests. (We’d go on about how this podcast isn’t recorded in a studio but you already know that based on all the TRAFFIC NOISES.)

There’s more than one “Gone” podcast out there, but the one that Jeffrey and Joseph want us to listen to is here.
Correction: Elizabeth signed off with the usual “see you in one week” but we’d JUST GOT DONE SAYING that we’ll be off a week due to vacation, but you know, podcasting autopilot mouth.

  • Binary System Podcast #187 – Welcome to Night Vale #151 “The Waterfall”
It’s tough to be starting out in college sometimes. New setting, new routine, on the edge of adulthood, maybe trying to figure out how you feel about the cute boy who was flirting with you at a party.
It’s even tougher when you’re a citizen of Night Vale who happens to be a teenage shape-shifter, and you turned into the most embarrassing, unwieldy shape you can imagine in your sleep. AND NOW YOU’RE STUCK.
Join the twins on their recap of a surprisingly sweet short-story episode of Welcome To Night Vale that can be interpreted in several different ways.
This week’s podcast is also a spoiler-free study of endings, namely the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion (seriously, Japan, what the hell?), the ending of Game of Thrones (okay, we can see where things went off track) and the ending of the last season of Dexter (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?)

This week’s outro music is a clip from Lightstream by Siddhartha
Elizabeth’s interview with Transformers writer John Bleszinski can be found here.
Correction: We probably should have looked up Brie Williams and her previous writing credits, because it turns out that in addition to this episode, she also wrote for several other Night Vale episodes, including one of our favorites, Episode 101 Guidelines for Disposal

  • Binary System Podcast #186 – Storytime
Back on episode 182 we talked about the Night Vale Presents Podcast “Start With This,” and mentioned the creators assigned the listeners two homework projects: write one story that you destroy immediately, and one story that you share with everybody. To the surprise of everyone, including ourselves, we actually did both.
(Finishing an assignment? Has Binary System been taken over by Pod People?? Hang on, did they finally watch How To Train Your Dragon 3? No? Then this was just a fluke.)
Listen in as we each read aloud the two-minute story we wrote about birds, and what we think they’re thinking. And, because we never can keep to one subject, we also talk Neon Genesis Evangelion, the dubbing in Howl’s Moving Castle, and Max Gladstone’s Empress of Forever.

This is the poem Elizabeth liked from the Performance Poetry Podcast.
Here’s that Star Trek Enterprise April Fool’s Day story Kathryn and Elizabeth wrote together yeeeeaaaars ago.

  • Binary System Podcast #185 – San Diego Comic-Con!!!
We’ve got a slightly longer episode this week, since there was a slightly big event going on in California last week. You may have heard about it…San Diego ComicCon 2019, which also happened to be the big convention’s 50th anniversary! Elizabeth went to all five days, and she’s got details about upcoming movies and TV, fantastic cosplay, fascinating items on sale, and the new Doctor Who VR game!
Of course we never stick to an agenda (just like we never plan ahead. Or do research. Or follow a schedule. What day is it again?) so we also talked about the latest Neil Gaiman short story adaptation, the latest book by Yahtzee Croshaw (of Zero Punctuation fame), our tenuous connection to the Pinter play “Betrayal”, why we hope “Carnival Row” will be better than “Valerian: City of a Thousand Planets (but may have to settle for it being pretty) and why we’re just not speaking to the creators of ElfQuest right now.Read OnBinary System Podcast #185 – San Diego Comic-Con!!!

  • Binary System Podcast #184 – The Blair Witch Project 20th Anniversary
After 20 years we know everybody has already said just about everything that can be said about this movie. And that certainly isn’t going to stop us from fangirling all over it some more. (I mean, that never stopped us before, right? Does anything stop us from fangirling all over the place? Don’t answer that.)
Listen in as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project and go over all the tidbits we turned up in our research (“research” meaning the director’s commentary and the imdb trivia) about the ultimate (as far as we’re concerned) shaky-cam movie.
And because we never can stay on topic for very long, we also touch on: the first episode of Stranger Things season 3, the first three episodes of Jessica Jones season 2, The Great British Bake-Off, The Crown, The Wicked and the Divine, Motor Girl, and Starscream in gym shorts.Read OnBinary System Podcast #184 – The Blair Witch Project 20th Anniversary
