  • Binge Movie Aftertaste – Christopher Nolan Retrospective w/ Jack Falvey IV and Matthew Goudreau: Memento (2001)
After doing full career retrospectives on Michael Mann and Quentin Tarantino last year, it didn't take long to figure out whose directorial career the Aftertaste was going to tackle next. An influencer, and someone whose films can be dissected to death, Christopher Nolan is someone who has a firm grasp on what kind of vision he wants to display. From Batman to focused World War II stories, Nolan has certainly run the gamut of what kind of stories he has to tell. But with the only Nolan related things covered in this podcast being his Dark Knight Trilogy, as well as him having a film called Tenet scheduled to come out this summer, we felt it was time to tackle the rest of his career. So join myself, Jack, and Matt as we look at what his career outside of the cowl has consisted of, while leading up to a review of Tenet.

After making a mini splash with Following, Christopher Nolan was set to make his next move. Once again returning to the film noir genre, Nolan made the splash he was looking for with Memento, a complete mind fuck of a movie that garnered a lot of praise for both its director and stars.

Who stands out in this cast? Who did Nolan originally have cast in the lead role? Is the movie that the main show on this very network just a few weeks ago called the best film of the 2000s....a bit overrated? Find out as Jack, Matt, and myself review and attempt to dissect Memento, Christopher Nolan's second film.

Also, be sure to listen to the end as the boys reveal some changes made to this retrospective series!

    Memento (2001) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10)

  • Binge Movie Aftertaste – Christopher Nolan Retrospective w/ Jack Falvey IV and Matthew Goudreau: Following (1999)

In 1998, Christopher Nolan got his foot in the door with a little movie called Following. Made for less than the down payment of a car, the movie garnered praise and captured the attention of the right industry people, intent on giving the upstart the young career of the British filmmaker needed. But was this film, a movie without any stars which is less than half the length of his latest release, the kind of movie that deserves a first and second look? Or is it just something fans of the man's work like to point to just because it as an IMDB credit on their favorite filmmaker's resume?

Listen to Jack, Matt, and myself as we begin our look at one of the most praised filmmakers of our time.

    Following (1998) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10)

  • Movie Homework: Rounders
    Welcome to Movie Homework!
This week we're continuing our series of "Does It Hold Up?"  What does that mean?  Well we're watching movies that the three of us (Jack, Alyx and StepChad haven't seen in a long time) and asking the question of whether or not they still hold up today.  Last week, we covered The Wild Bunch.
This week we're revisiting the 1998 poker film Rounders.  One of Matt Damon's early (and more notable) starring roles, the film features a who's-who of acting talent, is regularly cited as one of (if not THE) greatest film about poker, and it features one of the best John Malkovich performances of all time.  Does it hold up?  Find out for yourself.
