Before Star Wars, there was Bond. James Bond. It is a film franchise that has inspired everyone in in the industry from Steven Spielberg to Christopher Nolan to Rian Johnson. Eight actors have (unofficially) played the character over its almost sixty years in existence. And there is another one coming out this April. So what better time for the Binge Movie Aftertaste to gear up and cover a franchise that has been requested for years. Myself, Adam, and Matt are going to fire through a gun barrel the entire 26 film franchise, cultivating in a review of Cary Fukunaga's No Time To Die, which is being heralded as Daniel Craig's final bow as the character.
After Quantum of Solace, the James Bond franchise was once again at a stand still. Sure, they had their most well regarded pure actor in the role receiving a ton of accolades. But to say the second movie didn't live up to the potential of its previous entry would be an understatement. And once again, MGM was on the verge of losing to the IRS in the form of bankruptcy.
Yet, the Broccolis found a way to not only greenlight another film with Daniel Craig in the lead, the also got Oscar winner Sam Mendes to helm the movie. Skyfall was born and, when released, garnered almost as many good notices as Casino Royale, with 007 pundits predicting Oscar wins for their beloved secret agent. While gold statues in the major categories still alluded them, Skyfall did not come up short in the box office department, making over $1 billion in its initial run. Do we feel the huge box office is warranted? Listen to find out!
We also talk about when Mendes came back in 2015 to direct Spectre. This time they were armed with an Oscar winner in the role of Bond villain Franz Oberhauser. Or were they? Listen in as we spew a review in which we dissect a movie that was praised by many (including at least one person on this podcast) as being among their most anticipated of the year. Did it live up to the hype?
We would again like to thank one and all who took this Bond journey with us, and as a reminder, we will in fact give a week of release review of No Time To Die when it is finally released to theaters.
In the meantime, the Aftertaste isn't going away. Stay tuned for more retrospectives, and maybe even an interview or two.
