Old Tub is a re-release by Jim Beam. They nailed the appearance on this one with the vintage label. This non-chill filtered, 4 year old bourbon hits all points for me. At 100 proof, it's not punchy on the nose and I pick up the typically Beam nuttiness, with some mint, caramel and hay. I get a bit of a mash smell on the nose too.....aromatic and balanced. To taste, I get a peppery, tobacco mouth coat but not overly strong on the alcohol. I definitely get some oak here too. The finish is long for me and reminds me of Cracker Jacks with peanut and toffee and subtle fruits, with a dash of pepper. For around $20 most everyone should give this a try and could easily become your daily sipper. Cheers

TOP 100 PGA Instructor Tom Patri on Winged Foot, Embracing Technology, Fred Couples, Bryson DeChambeau, Key West & more

The Birdies & Bourbon team had a blast chatting with TOP 100 PGA Instructor Tom Patri on golf today. Tom chats about the upcoming US Open at Winged Foot in NY, a course that he is very familiar with through the years. We chat about embracing golf technology and the golfers mindset and how these play a role in your score. Bryson DeChambeau has been slipping a bit lately and we chat about the struggles and challenges with the long drive approach to the game of golf. Tom was a ton of fun on the show. 

Tom Patri, One of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America, has been a leading voice in golf instruction for more than 30 years.

Tom has taught at every level of the game, coaching more than 100 PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and PGA Club Professionals, and hundreds of top juniors and amateurs. The game has taken Tom around the world – first as a distinguished player and, now, as one of golf’s most knowledgeable and decorated teachers.

In 1990, he became Director of Instruction at the prestigious Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York, where he worked for 11 years at the home of the famed PGA Tour stop, the Westchester Classic. Tom now resides in Naples, Florida with his wife, Denise, and son, Palmer Jackson, and is the Founder and Owner of TP Golf Services.

One of GolfTip’s Magazine Top 25 Teachers in America is just one of many honors. Tom was named one of the Top 25 Instructors in New York State in 1999 and 2000 by Golf Digest, the 1998 Metropolitan PGA Teacher of the Year and the South Florida PGA Teacher of the Year in 2006. He was twice named Southwest Florida PGA Teacher of the Year in 2003 and 2006.

Tom also carries a champion pedigree as a player. He was the 1981 NCAA II National Champion while attending Florida Southern College and was twice named a First Team All-American selection. In the 30 years since, Tom has built a formidable teaching enterprise that has made him a sought-after authority in the game. He has appeared on The Golf Channel, NBC-TV, Madison Square Garden Network and his articles have appeared in such noted publications as Sports Illustrated, Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Executive Golfer, Golf for Women, Golf Illustrated, Senior Golfer, Petersen’s Golfing and The Met Golfer. He has also been a golf columnist for The Naples News since 2007.

His first book “The Six Spoke Approach to Better Golf Learning” received rave reviews when released in 2003. He is currently working on his second book.

The Birdies & Bourbon team had a great time chatting with Marianne Eaves on the show. Marianne is Kentucky's First Female Master Distiller since Prohibition. Peyton Manning has also named her the quarterback for the Sweetens Cove Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey. On the show we were able to taste the first Sweetens Cove release with Marianne and discuss the process for making the release as well as notes and balance within the spirit.

Born in Tennessee and raised in Kentucky, geography alone may have been telling Marianne Eaves that her destiny was to be a whiskey maker. However, it was courage to buck tradition, her creative engineering mind and a voracious appetite for learning that actualized her place in history as Kentucky’s First Female Bourbon Master Distiller since Prohibition.   

After a fast and early failure in art consignment, Eaves decided to follow her long love of math and science and pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville. Her combination of technical knowledge, hands-on experience, specialized palate and focus on thoughtful innovation are a unique formula for her role as Master Distiller. Praise for her recipes come from hobbyist consumers and spirits aficionados alike — her vodka and gin confuses and excites the palette with honest balance and nuanced complexity. The fortunate few who have tasted barrels that are resting at Castle & Key Distillery agree that the future is bright for Eaves and her creations.  

As she transitions into her new role as a consultant and ambassador for Kentucky’s finest spirit, Eaves is well poised as a leader of the new generation of spirits professionals that will shape the industry. Jon Rahm wins the 2020 BMW Championship in a playoff with Dustin Johnson | PGA Tournament Recap, Highlights and Storylines

Congrats to Jon Rahm on his win at the BMW Championship this weekend. The PGA Tour season comes to an end next week in Atlanta at Eastlake Golf Club. Jon and Dustin Johnson finished the tournament in a playoff. Rahm rolled in an insane putt to beat Dustin Johnson in the playoff. Congrats to Rory McIlroy on his announcement that he is expecting a daughter in the coming days. Rory's game picked up quite a bit this week at Olympia Fields. We hope he can make the tour championship next week at Eastlake. Rory always plays Eastlake well. We have a great finish coming up next week for the FedEx Cup. Rory McIlory, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger, Collin Morikawa, Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed and Hideki Matsuyama all will compete next week with the rest of the Top 30.

Eastlake Golf Club COO/GM Chad Parker joins the show to chat about the Tour Championship, FedEx Cup, BBQ & Pickles

The Birdies & Bourbon team had a blast chatting with Eastlake Golf Club COO/GM Chad Parker. We discussed with Chad how the course will play for the FedEx Cup, Atlanta weather, the PGA Tour Playoffs and BBQ. Chad was great to chat golf with and we also learned about his passion cooking BBQ and making pickles. We can't wait to meet with Chad and try the BBQ and pickles. 

Chad Parker graduated from Mississippi State University in 1995, receiving a B.B.A. degree in Marketing/Professional Golf Management. He started his career in the golf business as an Assistant Golf Professional at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, AL before moving to East Lake Golf Club in 1996. In 1997 he was promoted to Head Golf Professional and then to General Manager/COO & Director of Golf in 2014. In 2013, he successfully completed the requirements for PGA Certification in General Management. This places Chad among the top 3% of the 22,000 members of The PGA of America.

As General Manager/COO & Director of Golf, he has been active in the area of golf tournament management, serving as host professional for 14 PGA TOUR events and 3 major amateur event. Chad also has a passion for merchandising and has been honored 13 times by the Association of Golf Merchandisers and Golf World Magazine as having one of the “Top 100 Golf Shops” in the United States. He was named Merchandiser of the Year by the Georgia Section PGA in 2002 and won the inaugural Golf World “Best Merchandising” award for in 2004. In 2011, Chad was awarded the Horton Smith Award by the Georgia Section PGA for his continuing contributions to professional education.
