Around the Bases (Sort Of)

The Orioles’ season is undeniably over. But we’re just not ready. We’re not ready to break down exactly what happened in 2017, and to start forecasting for 2018. I mean, how long can we continue to say “get starting pitching. No, real starting pitching?”

We’re just not ready. Maybe the prospect of our first losing season in six years gave us some fatigue. Actually, let’s stop and talk about that for a minute… do you think the long season, and the way it ended caused fan fatigue in general, and for you, personally?

OK, so we’re not ready. All that will wait for a future offseason show. In the meantime, let’s go around the bases.

They Are Who They Thought We Were

Are these guys who who we thought they were? We talk through which of the 2017 Orioles are more likely to be the guys they were this past season.
Scott puts a wrinkle in it by asking us which Oriole is more likely to repeat their 2017 performance:

Well… phooey. The Orioles are in the midst of a Dark Ages style swoon. It’s the kind of stretch where you look up and realize that the Orioles are 2-8 over their last ten games. It’s the kind of stretch where they lose games in every way imaginable. It’s the kind of stretch that makes you think “please let them be good next year.”

The Orioles are in the midst of their first losing season since 2011. It’s a lost season. What’s the point? This end of this season has a different feel to it, in our frustration and hopelessness.

Tuesday’s loss to the Red Sox – their second 11-inning defeat in as many days – was interesting, because after it was over, I didn’t feel so bad. We weren’t as pissed as we expected to be in a game in which an Orioles reliever literally threw the game away.

Why?

If there’s so little to analyze, all that remains is for us to feel our own feelings. We feel our way through:

* J.J. Hardy – How do you say goodbye?
* Austin Hays – How real is real?
* Trey Mancini – We’re sorry we doubted you.
* 2018 roster – Who can we not stand to see back?
