  • Episode 51: Turn the Beat Around
    Leading Off
    Fresh off a depressing week of Orioles baseball, we head directly to the Drink of the Week. Afterward, we check in on The Brian Robert Watch (#TheBrianRobertsWatch), and the Medical Wing:

    * Nolan Reimold
    * Wilson Betemit
    * Jason Hammel
    * Steve Pearce

    News & Notes
     There was plenty of action on and off the field this week. As usual, the guys cover the important stories:

    * Michael Morse joins the team
    * Magness family dong chant
    * September call-ups

    Are the Orioles Fading?
    Jake makes the case that the Orioles are fading:

    * The O’s are losing blowouts.
    * They’re losing shootouts.
    * They’re losing pitching duels.

    Not enough hitting, not enough starting pitching, unreliable bullpen. Nothing is coming up Millhouse. In the stretch run, we said that the Orioles would prove their mettle – asserting that they belong in playoff contention. Instead, they’ve lost series to their AL East foes, and have effectively removed themselves from AL East contention.
    Scott points out that all is not lost. In his own… special way.
    Strange that the guys seem to have switched roles – the Orioles Optimist and the Orioles Cynic.
    Buckle Up (Again), Birdland. September is going to be a bumpy ride, full of meaningful games.

    On the Road Again: Carne Cabeza
    The guys welcome Carne Cabeza to the show to talk Orioles fandom, wearing a cape, and a recent experience on the road in Yankee Stadium. Carne is a true Orioles fan, and a fixture at Camden Yards (and M&T Stadium). If you’ve seen him, you know it. He’s the shirtless Orioles/Ravens luchadore, with more passion for Baltimore sports than sense or shame. Which is awesome.

    Carne talks about dealing with notoriety, the origins of his costume, and how well (or not) it was received in Yankees Stadium this past weekend. Check out Carne at his website, and be sure to listen to his podcast, Baltimore Bad Birds.

    Fantasy Boss
    YOU GUYS! SCOTT WON FANTASY BOSS THIS WEEK! Jake totally got all snooty about it, until Scott brought him back down to earth. Chris Davis out RBI’d Adam Jones (4-3), which meant that Scott got to pick his own stat for this week: BABIP.
    Jake went with Manny Machado.
    Scott took Chris Davis.

    The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

  • Episode 50: Great Expectations
    Leading Off
    Our 50th episode is a special one. As usual, we start off with the Drink of the Week,  The Brian Robert Watch (#TheBrianRobertsWatch), and the Medical Wing:

    * Nolan Reimold
    * Wilson Betemit
    * Jason Hammel

    Great Expectations
    What should Orioles fans expectations be? What do the Orioles expect of themselves? Scott lets Jake rant about the beauty of Orioles baseball, and then reviews Roch’s interveiw with Troy Patton. What is the mark of a successful season? Is it playoff success, or merely the pursuit? The guys weigh in, and wax philisophical on what it means to “win” as an Orioles fan.

    Letters to the Orioles
    After the success of the “Dear Dan/Dear Buck” segment, Jake and Scott expand the scope of their letters. Jake rants about access to playoff games, whereas Scott throws his support behind a certain broadcaster, maligned by the common fan (he’s much better at hockey).

    Fantasy Boss
    Last week, we threw down the gauntlet: was the  best version of You’re the Boss done by Elvis or Brian Setzer? That question is answered this week. Jake and Scott square off for fantasy baseball dominance. Keep your ears open for signs of hopelessness from one of the BEV hosts.
    We decided to go easy on next week’s category. The surprise category is RBI. Scott went with Chris Davis, whereas Jake went with Adam Jones.
    Who will own it?

  • Episode 49: Billy Shears, WAR, and the Clutch
    Leading Off
    Episode 49 begins with a tip of the cap to the fine folks at OBP Apparel, for their great work on our new logo. Check out how awesome they are, and our spiffy new look:

    At the top of the show, we go through our usual shtick:

    * Drink of the Week
    * #TheBrianRobertsWatch
    * The Medical Wing

    Thanks to everyone who has followed us on Twitter and liked us on Facebook. We’re really feeling the love. Scott is busy giving stuff away left and right. Last week, we watched Wilson drift away, and this week, Scott has ensured that Aubrey Huff and Chris Davis got around.

    A Little Help From My Friends
    The O’s bullpen could use a little help – none more than Jim Johnson. Scott uses those pesky numbers to put the bullpen’s performance in perspective. Jake mocks, and adds little of value to the conversation.
    WAR has been hotly debated on this program, but is CLUTCH really a stat? Yeesh…

    Potpourri
    Sexiest potpourri makes a return, as we listen to the sultry sounds of Alex Trebek. Topics addressed:

    * A-Rod on SNB
    * O’s troubles with RISP
    * Trade options (Justin Morneau or bust?)
    * Chris Davis
    * September call-ups

    Fantasy Boss
    Score: Jake, 5, Scott 1
    Scott is starting to walk funny. Miguel Gonzalez posted more Ks than Chris Tillman, and Jake takes another win. This week’s category is pitches seen per AB – Scott goes with Nick Markakis, and Jake selects Chris Davis.
    Who will own it?

    The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

  • Episode 48: Eight Days a Week
    Leading Off
    The guys are back together again for Episode 48. After being cruelly separated by vacation, the banter and arguing is back. The guys renewed their plea for suggestions for #TheDrunkGaryThorne. The Brian Roberts Watch reveals a poor week at the plate, but Brian Roberts is still playing baseball! The Medical Wing debates the return of Wilson Betemit, and a discussion of how hurt Jason Hammel is. Did someone say Dr. James Andrews?!?!
    The Orioles are holding a a contest, inviting fans to design a give-away t-shirt. An event like this is clearly an invitation for OBP Apparel to kick ass. In the interests of futility, the guys suggest a few other options.
    Scott has picked a winner for the #SorryWilson giveaway!

    O’s Fans at Home and Abroad
    Jake recounts his experiences with running into Orioles fans in Wildwood, NJ. Scott wonders if Orioles fans are starting to travel for the O’s, and whether there is a strong bandwagon presence. What can we reasonably expect for a turnout for the Rockies and Tampa series?

    Return to Glory Days?
    Mark Reynolds has been released by the Indians. Jake and Scott debate the “wisdom” of bringing the Sheriff back to town. Other names raised are Adam Dunn and Michael Young. What can we say? It’s nice to be a potential buyer in August.

    Fantasy Boss
    Score: Jake, 4, Scott 1
    Jake took another one – Jones over Davis in RBI last week. Jake selected strikeouts as this week’s category. Scott took Chris Tillman and Jake went with Miguel Gonzalez.

  • Episode 47: Home/Away Splits
    Leading Off
    Before we get started, please be sure to check out the Baltimore Sports Report Network, for episodes of Bird’s Eye View and four other great shows. We are thrilled to be a part of a great group of Orioles fanatics who put such great content together. Over at the BSRN, you’ll find:

    * Bird’s Eye View
    * Section 336
    * BSR Podcast
    * Baltimorons
    * Orioles Spastics

    Check these guys out. If you’ve got the attention span and the patience for us every week, you are going to LOVE the Baltimore Sports Report Network.
    Jake and Scott spend this podcast cruelly separated by Jake’s vacation, and “sub-standard” internet service in the Dirty Jersey. Undeterred, they put together Episode 47 with tape, bits of string, and a lot of wishful thinking. We start off, as always with The Brian Roberts Watch, in which we meet baby Jax, the result of this week’s Baby Roberts Watch. Roberts’ small sample size brings more of the same: mediocre at the plate, passable in the field. Competent, not stellar.
    We want to see #TheBrianRobertsWatch take over Twitter. Use this hashtag whenever he’s up – good, bad, or ugly. Let’s make this, as Jake so eloquently put it, “a thing.”
    Then, it’s a quick trip through the Medical Wing (after having missed it last week, whoops), for updates on the usual suspects:

    * Steve Johnson was activated and recalled to the Orioles. He’s since been optioned back to AAA.
    * Nolan Reimold is done – possibly as an Oriole
    * Jason Hammel is being conveniently ignored. He will join the team on the West Coast road trip, so it is possible that he will not go on a full rehab assignment.
    * Wilson Betemit is expected to begin his rehab assignment on August 6 (Gulf Coast League).

    Dear Dan / Dear Buck
    In a new feature, Jake and Scott write letters to Orioles leadership. We’ll see how the organization reacts to these letters before deciding to do it again. You can’t have too many hometown hacks complaining about being banned from the stadium.

    The Hunt for Orange October
    Jake and Scott lay the argument for whether the Orioles are playoff bound in 2013. As usual, Jake takes the rosy, Orange Kool Aid side, and Scott douses the proceedings with a dose of cold reality. Are the Orioles a playoff team?

    Fantasy Boss
    Score: Jake, 3, Scott 1
    The guys tied last week, but the possession arrow favored Scott. Think that’s a stupid rule? We agree, but it’s never stopped us before. Scott picked RBIs for next week. Jake took Adam Jones, and Scott took Chris Davis.
    Who will own it?

  • Episode 46: Happy Pills
    Leading Off
    Jake wimps out of the Drink of the Week, since he’s still heavily medicated from his wisdom tooth surgery. Scott (rightly) mocks him profusely.
    Bird’s Eye View is back, and better than never. In this week’s episode, they start with a review of The Brian Roberts Watch, which was reasonably good for this week. Roberts in hanging in there, with positive, not spectacular production in the lineup and solid defense.
    The Podcast War
    The guys briefly address the ridiculous Podcast War that is gripping the Bird-o-sphere. The other podcasts think they’re good, but they’ve got nothing on Bird’s Eye View. This thing will get settled on August 1. The gauntlet has been thrown down, and we WILL prevail.
    …but we’ve agreed to a truce for Tuesday’s Night at the Yard hosted by Section 336. But then it’s on. Like Donkey Kong.

    Trade Deadline
    The guys review the names that have been linked to the Orioles for the non-waiver trade deadline. Neither thinks the Orioles will make a splash, but there’s always the possibility that a second-tier move will be made before the end of August. Jake wonders if O’s fans need to come to terms with being in the position to give up young talent for a rental to push us into the playoffs.

    Radio, Radio
    Ben McDonald recently filled in for a vacationing Fred Manfra on the Orioles Radio Network, which prompted the question: is McDonald being groomed to replace Jim Palmer, once the Hall of Famer is ready to hang up the mic? Conspiracy theories aside, McDonald is great in the roll: good insight, a comfort behind the mic, and that smooth country charm Scott likes so much. The guys reveal their ideal TV and radio pairing.

    “You Wouldn’t Like to See Me When I Struggle”
    Chris Davis is slumping mightily, and it is not pretty. He’s struck out in almost half his at-bats since the All Star Break. Scott thinks Chris Davis should never sit again, ever. Jake is a little more tempered. However it’s handled, Davis is in a funk, and something’s got to give. The guys review the pros and cons of giving Davis a break, and talk about who would play 1B in his place (the options are not pretty).
    Once these arm-chair managers decide on Davis, the same argument holds true for Manny Machado. Firmly planted in the #2 hole, it’s been a while since Manny has doubled, and even longer since he’s consistently contributed. What do you do with The Young Machado?

    Hello? Is This Thing On?
    Andrew Stetka wrote a great piece for Eutaw Street Report which called out Orioles fans for their poor showing in the Red Sox series this past weekend. Jake goes on a rant about how right Andrew is. If you can’t get up for an exciting weekend series against hated rivals, when AL East prominence is on the line… why are you an Orioles fan again? Certainly, there’s very little hope of fans like that representing well during the Houston and Seattle series.
    We highly encourage you to read Andrew’s piece, and to check out his work on Eutaw Street Report, as well as his guest blogger spots on masnsports.com.

    Fantasy Boss
    Score: Jake 3, Scott 0
    This is getting embarrassing. Scott has got to start putting points on the board – especially because Jake picks such stupid categories. This week is no exception: which Orioles reliever will log more IP?
    Scott took Tommy Hunter, Jake took Jim Johnson. Who will own it?

  • Episode 45: The Cheat
    Leading Off
    The guys start off, as always with The Brian Roberts Watch and a trip through the Medical Wing. The only notable injury news is that of Nolan Reimold, whose season ended in surgery. Again.
    A reminder that if you missed the BEVys awards show, you can find that here. We’ve gotten lots of great feedback on it, and we had a blast putting it together.
    Since our last episode, 5 Orioles represented Baltimore in the All Star Game, and Chris Davis participated in the Home Run Derby. The guys go through the Birds’ contributions, and come to the conclusion that they acquitted themselves admirably. Jake whines about a nonsensical article in The Atlantic that blames the downfall of the Mid-Summer Classic on the city of Baltimore. Finally, the Orioles are making a bid on the 2016 game. Could there be a better venue than Camden Yards for baseball’s biggest exhibition?
    The Podcast War
    We didn’t start it, but we’ll certainly finish it. Section 336 and the Spastics seem to think that “Baltimore’s best sports podcast” is a title you can just claim… We’re not really sure what’s going on here, but you can see the gauntlet get thrown down here. Apparently, there’s some big announcement coming on August 1.

    PEDs in Baseball
    With the Ryan Braun suspension gripping the news, the guys discuss whether the steroid era is alive and strong, or waning in strength. Do the players care about steroids? Do the fans, at this point? Jake warns O’s fans not to get too far down the path of schadenfreude, as this can happen to any player, any fan base, any time.
    Now that the Biogenesis thing is a… thing, is Danny Valencia getting suspended? What does that do to our roster?

    Hammerin’ Hank
    Well, he’s here. And it looks like he’s here to stay (until he proves otherwise). How excited should we be? Will he get starts against lefties? Will we see him in the field? Will we ever bother to learn his real name?

    AL East: All Together Now
    The Orioles are firing on all cylinders at this point, featuring solid starting pitching and a resurgent offense.
    Pitching:

    * Who is the real Scott Feldman?
    * Tillman and Gonzalez are solid

    Offense:

    * It’s not just Machado and Davis
    * J.J. Hardy and Matt Wieters are getting it done right now
    * The bottom of the lineup is turning it over to get back to the top

    The Orioles are getting hot at the right time. Their schedule softens up for a bit, with teams like Houston, Seattle, and the NL West coming up. Beyond the Orioles’ schedule, they HAVE to keep pace with the Rays, if they’re going to have a chance in October. The Rays are mauling the AL East right now, and it’s going to be a dogfight from here out.
    If the season ended today, the Red Sox, Rays, and Orioles would be headed to the playoffs. Buckle Up.

    Fantasy Boss
    Score: Jake 2, Scott 0
    Jake took the win last week, and this week’s category is walks. Who draws the most walks this week?
    Scott took Davis, Jake took Markakis. Who will own it?

  • Episode 44: Jonesing for Consistency
    Leading Off
    We start off with The Brian Roberts Watch (1:44), to find that B-Rob had a decent week. Playing the field in addition to serving as the designated hitter, Roberts appeared in the 1,6, 8, and 9 hole. He didn’t have a ton of hits, but when he got them, he made them count.
    No real updated in The Medical Wing(4:00):

    * Steve Johnson – threw live BP on 7/11
    * Steve Pearce – no real update… feeling “better” after 7/14 injection
    * Wilson Betemit – no change … nowhere near a return

    The BEVys
    Catch our mid-season awards show this Thursday, July 28th!

    Jonesing for Consistency
    It seems that Adam Jones’ season has been inconsistent, with his struggles in the field, and his Vlad Guerrero-esque approach at the plate (6:50).  In fact, a look at his stats show that he’s had a very solid first “half.”  Jones has been the MVO (Most Valuable Oriole) for the past two years, and with his big contract extension last year, has become the face of the franchise in many respects (8:03).

    Many fans considered all to be forgiven with his home run against Mariano Rivera, to avoid a sweep in New York (8:49), but some are still clamoring for him to be moved from center to left (10:24), or dropped in the order (13:23).  With the frustrating at bats, when you look back at Jones’ body of work, he’s going to have more clutch at-bats than not (13:52).

    Hammel Woes
    The guys debate what reasonable expectations for Jason Hammel were before the start of the season (19:52). Though he will never be an absolute stud – an ace – Jason Hammel was tapped to be the veteran presence that made him the #1 starter in a weak rotation. Instead, he has done a good job of impersonating the guy who got run out of Colorado. Hammel has been very fortunate in his seven wins (23:25), and hasn’t won since late May.
    Scott broke down Hammel’s pitches with the help of his friends at brooksbaseball.net (24:30). Whereas there are “facts” and “numbers” involved, the bottom line comes to the fact that Hammel is getting less movement on his pitches, and the velocity has come down on his fastball and slider (26:39).
    The question becomes “what do you do with Jason Hammel? The options are (29:20):

    * Leave him in the rotation
    * Send him to the bullpen
    * Get him to agree to being sent to AAA
    * Release him

    OK, so it’s very unlikely that he’ll agree to a demotion, or that he’ll get released. The most likely development is that Buck will leave him in the rotation (29:50). The question is how long a leash he will get it. There aren’t a plethora of talented arms waiting to replace him.

    BEV: Fantasy Like a Boss
    Score – Jake 1, Scott 0 (32:55)
    Last week: Jake took Machado and Scott took in Markakis in a battle over OBP.
    This week: Which Orioles All Star will be involved in more at-bats? Scott: Manny Machado Jake: Chris Davis

  • Episode 43: The Best of Times, the Worst of Times
    Leading Off
    And… we’re back at full strength! Scott returns from vacation, and leaves the bell back at the beach. The Brian Roberts Watch (3:05) highlights Brian’s week: great defense, but slow week at the plate. From there, a trip through the Medical Wing (5:43) shows that the Orioles are getting healthy at the right time.

    * Wei-Yin Chen – Joined the team in NY. Will probably rejoin the team this week.
    * Steve Johnson – Threw 35 pitches off a mound today, good command, no setbacks.
    * Steve Pearce – No change… soreness in left wrist is nearly gone, hasn’t been cleared for baseball activities
    * Wilson Betemit – no change – nowhere near a return

    The BEVys
    Thanks to our friends and colleagues who have provided categories for the BEVys (11:16). The BEVys Awards Show episode will air on Thursday, July 18th. We’ll review first half highlights, and hand out awards for first-half greatness. Thanks to our friends from:

    * Baltimorons
    * Section 336
    * Orioles Uncensored
    * Eutaw Street Report
    * Orioles Spastics
    * National Discourse

    Be sure to tune in for our first annual awards show.

     All Star Voting
    The Orioles will be well represented at the 2013 All Star Game (12:53). This is the Birds’ best showing since 2005. Jones, Davis, and Hardy will Start, and Machado will serve as an alternate. Nick Markakis was a near miss, and Nate McLouth (5th among AL All Star OFs) was not selected.
    Scott worries that such great All Star representation will lead to a mid-season downfall (15:10). The guys debate whether the MLB All Star game is the best all star game in professional sports, and whether the NBA counts as a major sport (22:42).

    Get Some Perspective
    Scott gets his positive thinking on, and takes Orioles fans to task for complaining about the results of the past week (29:10). Scott tells those of us who are on ledge to “chill the F out.” Back-to-back series losses is definitely a bad thing, but those have been few and far between for the Orioles. As bad as the Yankees series was in New York, the Orioles went 4-2 against the Yankees within a week (32:30).
    At this point in the season, the Orioles are keeping themselves within striking distance even through rough patches (35:13). Jake wonders aloud if social media, and Twitter specifically, drives overreaction (35:45).
    Potpourri
    Potpourri returns, with a cleaner version of the Alex Trebek intro. Scott is benevolent, and leaves The Bell at home. Here are the topics that can’t stand alone on their own:

    * Buck’s celebratory leg kick (40:18)
