Mental wellbeing can be described as a combination of how we feel (our emotions and life satisfaction) and how we function (relationships with others, personal control, purpose in life and independence). It is something that affects everyone, old and young, and anyone can experience good or poor mental wellbeing. This podcast episode is the first in a whole mental health series and is mainly looking to debunk and break down some common mental health terminology to set you up in good stead for the upcoming episodes

What really is a problem?

The Chambers’ 20th Century Dictionary states that,

“A problem is a matter difficult of settlement or solution”

In true legend style, the bible comes in and reassures us in Phillipines 4:6 with,

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”

Either way we all acknowledge that problems are a part of life and in one way or another, whether we use common sense, a Ouija board or the good old Bible, we all at one point or another seek to solve the problems of our life.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented disruption to the fabric of society, our health service and economy. However, the multitude of challenges presented by the pandemic may also pose a significant threat to our psychological health. Individuals are facing a panoply of stressors including serious illness, bereavement, social distancing and unemployment.

You can only learn from a mistake after you admit you’ve made it. As soon as you start blaming other people (or the universe itself) you distance yourself from any possible lesson. But if you courageously stand up and honestly say “This is my mistake and I am responsible” the possibilities for learning will move towards you. Admission of a mistake, even if only privately to yourself, makes learning possible by moving the focus away from blame assignment and towards understanding. Wise people admit their mistakes easily.
