Just like any other style of music, hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different artists, but it came to life on August 11, 1973, at a birthday party in the recreation room of an apartment building in the west Bronx, New York. The specific location of that birthplace was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, and the man who presided over that historic party was the birthday girl’s brother, Clive Campbell—better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop.
From that day on, Hip-Hop as we know it has changed the lives of African Americans all over the globe. Hip-Hop gave many of us voices & even painted the picture of some of the very harsh realities for many urban communities. But more importantly Hip-Hop has become a way of life since it's birth in 1973. Today we welcome back two of our favorite guest, Harlem Cee & Sade to talk about something that we all love...Hip-Hop. Join us in this 1st of 2 parts as we discuss the current state of Hip-Hop, our introduction to it & even why we think it is so important. We are talking about all that & more so make sure you tune in & don't forget to catch the 2nd part next Thursday(4/15) on all streaming platforms!!!

Barber shops and beauty salons aren't just small businesses in the black community; they are metaphorical street corners or town plazas. Customers visit both to get their hairstyled or cut but also for the therapeutic experience: They chat with the stylist behind the chair about what's going on in their lives, they hear about other regular customers — and they may even catch up on a little gossip. Sadly, many of these shops around the country are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and has meant shutting off the connection that leads to the heart of the black community.
Today we talk about the importance of the barbershops & hair salons in the black community. These shops have been in our communities since the beginning of time & if we don't protect them they will fade away & just be a thing of the past. Join in as we take a trip down memory lane with our first trips to the barbershop and even some of the bad experiences we've had at a barbershop. Lastly, 52 gives his 10 rules for going to a black barbershop at the 52minute mark. So no matter if you've been in a shop for 20 years, 20 months or 20 mins we want to make sure we protect you at all cost!!!

In 1967 the Queen of Soul recorded a song that become an anthem for decades. Not only was it a vocal masterpiece but she took the time to spell it out so you knew exactly where she was coming from. Let's be honest we've all sang "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" at some point in our lives. But is wasn't just Aretha who wanted respect but one of the biggest rappers/businessmen to come out of Louisiana also demanded respect be put on his name at a radio station in 2016. No matter if you ask for it or demand it, everybody wants respect. So we felt it was only necessary to touch on some of the folks with felt are deserving of respect or even credit for their impact. We're talking about celebrities, social networks & even technology that needs some respect on the name. So tune in as we let it be known to "put some respect on it".

On this episode we discuss the "Real Man" stigma and how it's been intensified by social media. Is our society putting extreme expectations on us black men? Or maybe, the standards are correct but the delivery is off. We compare the old school ways to the new in topics like chivalry, financial support and overall protection. Now of course we couldn't do this on our own so we welcome our very special guest "Sade" to the show to help us dive into this topic. Tune in to join the conversation as we figure out if fellas need to step up or if ladies are just asking too much right here on The People's Podcast!

For the past 15 years the NBA has instituted the rule that players must complete one year of collegiate ball before entering into the draft. While the league has stated that this is designed to help give players more time to mature, many people have criticized this move as controlling and just a way of not paying these young athletes. But what if we told you that many of us have felt they we only had one shot to make it in life? Whether it be in the classroom, workplace, the street or on a basketball court. As African-Americans we've been trained since we were younger to be great athletes or entertainers. More importantly we've been trained to think that we only get one chance to do make something of ourselves. Today we wanted to break down some of the different ways to define what one & done means to us. We know that many will automatically gravitate towards sports when they hear the term but we wanted to dig a little deeper. So listen in as we give our views on college athletes looking to make that transition into the league and so much more.
