  • Black All Year - Antiracist Discussions; From 'Not Racist' to Actively Anti-Racist: Personal Stories and Strategies for Change

    Send us a text

What happens when you're a Black person, facing discrimination and harassment in a world that often fails to provide the necessary protection and support? Join us as we explore the unique challenges faced by our guests, Loujane Alasi and Jamie Conway, who share their personal experiences of discrimination, racism and Islamophobia from a young age. Using prompts from Ibram X. Kendi's Antiracist Deck, through their stories, we examine the complexities of race, cultural identity, and the stark contrast between how society reacts to high profile cases involving white women and black women.

Delving into the topic of anti-racism, Lou Jane and Jamie discuss why it's not enough to simply be "not racist" in today's society. They highlight the importance of being actively anti-racist and how individuals can make the transition from being passive observers to catalysts for change. Drawing upon the BBC Bitesize video by John Amaechi, we tackle the essential differences between being not racist and anti-racist, and explore the importance of constant self-awareness and growth.

As we navigate the murky waters of racialisation and institutional spaces, our guests share their insights on accountability, cultural differences, and the human element in equality impact assessments. We also discuss strategies for combatting targeted violence and how we can all contribute to an antiracist future by constantly educating ourselves, checking our biases, and embracing discomfort as we learn and grow. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation with Lou Jane and Jamie on how to make a real difference in the fight against racism.

  • Black All Year - Black Baby Loss

    Send us a text

Baby loss is more prevalent in Black communities in the UK than in white communities and yet Black women and families access the support available to them less often. Following the loss of her son, midwife Alicia Burnett decided to do something to address the lack of relevant and targeted information for Black and mixed Black heritage people who've experienced baby loss and has created Black Baby Loss Awareness Week (15 - 21 May 2023).

Hear about the challenges faced by Black women; the systemic racism that contributes to higher baby loss rates and the lack of representation that means that they don't access the available support, and find out about how Black Baby Loss Awareness Week and Alicia are working to address some of these challenges.

  • Black All Year - Menopause, the Black Experience

    Send us a text

Whilst discussion about menopause is on the rise, you might be forgiven for thinking that it only affects white women. Google 'menopause' and you'll see images of white women; menopause spokespeople in the media are all white. But the menopause issues that affect White women also affect Black women, and they are then compounded by the social, economic and healthcare barriers and challenges that affect Black women of at all stages of life. Join Steph Edusei in conversation with Anita Powell.

Anita Powell is employed as a Community Engagement Advocate. With an interest in social issues and injustices, she has volunteered, worked and been an activist covering social inequality, heritage and menopause. She has worked on mental health issues, with ex-offenders, with people who are unemployed, on the menopause, and on refugee issues. She has been a menopause activist since 2019, founding the Menopause Alliance which holds a face-to-face peer support group in her hometown of Bedford where she grew up with her Afro-Caribbean family.

Anita hosts the podcast Black Menopause and Beyond which covers the topic of menopause and consists of interviews and reflections. Her reflections are made up of her lived experience, the experience of her peers and her professional experience working in the community sector.

In 2020 Anita became the Co-founder of Black Women in Menopause with Nina Kuyper, offering face-to-face online meetings via Zoom every two months. She is also a speaker on menopause, community, ethnic minorities, and women's issues and has appeared on BBC Breakfast, the Guardian, Magic FM radio, Maria Claire Magazine, Stylist and more.

  • Black All Year - Mind Your Language

    Send us a text

When it comes to race and ethnicity, language is powerful.
Fear of getting it wrong is used as a reason to not talk about race at all.
Getting it wrong can have terrible consequences for all involved.
It can uplift and it can destroy.

Join Ranjana Bell and Steph Edusei to discuss language in the context of race and ethnicity.

Ranjana Bell MBE is Chair of The Road to Recovery Trust, Newcastle upon Tyne, a charity that supports people on their journey of recovery from addictions which won the Asian Business Connexions 2021 3rd Sector Award.

  • Black All Year - No More Box Ticking

    Send us a text

The NHS is the UK's biggest employer of black and minority ethnic staff. What has it found it so hard to make progress on equality at work? How do we move from tick box exercises and make a real impact on equity and inclusion?

Anybody who is even vaguely interested in diversity, inclusion and racial equity in the NHS has heard of Roger Kline and so I was really keen to ask if he would take part in Black All year and honoured and excited when he agreed. Roger Kline is Research Fellow at Middlesex University Business School. He was the author of “The Snowy White Peaks of the NHS” (2014), and co-author of “The Price of Fear” (2018) on the cost of bullying in the NHS and co-author of “Fair to Refer” (2019) on disproportionate referrals of some groups of doctors to the General Medical Council. Roger is very active on Twitter and is well respected by many in NHS leadership.

  • The Antiracist Deck - a conversation on race and racism

    Send us a text

Talking about race and racism and having antiracist conversations is vital if we are going to see lasting and meaningful change. But conversations on race can be difficult for many, particularly when they are of different ethnicities.

Professor Ibram X Kendi is an American author, antiracist activist, founding Director of the Boston University Centre for  Antiracist Research and a historian of race and discriminatory policy in America. As well as writing a number of books including “How to Be Antiracist” and “How to raise an Antiracist” he has created a tool to help people talk about race – The Antiracist Deck.

Steph Edusei is joined by Risaria Langley, friend, writer, performer and producer, in conversation prompted by the cards in the Antiracist Deck. Neither claim to be experts in the subject of race, however, this is an honest and wide-ranging dialogue between two people who feel safe with each other.
