  • GOD'S GIFT #LesaBelle #GospelMusic 323.927.2913
    Hosted By: Lesa Marie Belle
As we go about our everyday lives, we encounter highs, lows, joy, sadness and various emotions as the world has a tendency to beat us up and bring us joy all at the same time.  Some of us will take the good with the bad & keep it moving. We get home and if we're lucky we have someone to vent to and discuss our hectic day with. So many of us are going through trials and tribulations, health issues, financial troubles, living from paycheck to paycheck, or with no check.   We' re faced with heartache, disappointment, loneliness, anger, and all too often we aren't able to easily shake it off or to talk about it with someone. We keep issues bottled up, maybe because we don't feel comfortable with sharing with others or we fear judgment for the issues we have or the things we're going through. Do you find yourself looking to the heavens and asking " Why me God?"  We've all been there and we all need to be restored! We're seeking answers and questioning "What is going on?"  Mind, body, soul & spirit need restoration.  Lord, please come by here and restore our minds, bodies, souls and spirits.

  • Black Reconstruction #LaShawnAllenMuhammad 323.927.2913
    Hosted By: LaShawn Allen-Muhammad
Who were the first Black Elected Officials? During the month of November, as the country gears up to re-elect or vote in the next wave of politicians, Black Reconstruction will revisit the Reconstruction era to pay homage to the Black Men who came before Obama.  During this tumultuous time, Blacks not only established townships, they also positioned themselves to be an integral part of government.
At a Glance.. In 1855, Brownhelm Township, founded by Col. Henry Brown,  gained notoriety throughout the U.S, when the township elected an African-American to government office.  The NY Syracuse Daily Journal, May 31, 1855 reported that John Mercer Langston was a fugitive slave who had been elected clerk.  Brownhelm's early residents had long been known for their strong anti-slavery stance; and Col. Henry Brown's home on the Lake Shore was often a final stop on the Underground Railroad, before reaching Canada by boat.    African-American Firsts: Government
Local elected official: John Mercer Langston, 1855, town clerk of Brownhelm Township, Ohio.
State elected official: Alexander Lucius Twilight, 1836, the Vermont legislature.
Governor (appointed): P.B.S. Pinchback served as governor of Louisiana from Dec. 9, 1872-Jan. 13, 1873, during impeachment proceedings against the elected governor.
U.S. Representative: Joseph Rainey became a Congressman from South Carolina in 1870 and was reelected four more times.
U.S. Senator: Hiram Revels became Senator from Mississippi from Feb. 25, 1870, to March 4, 1871, during Reconstruction.
There have only been a total of five black senators in U.S. history: the remaining two are Blanche K. Bruce [1875-1881] and Barack Obama

(This is a rebroadcast from May 2015; “Live” broadcasts will return Aug. 3rd.)
Program Title: 15 Deep & Simple Ways to Practice Gratitude
“One of the incredible truths about gratitude is that it is impossible to feel both the positive emotion of thankfulness and a negative emotion such as anger or fear at the same time.  Gratitude births only positive feelings—love, compassion, joy, and hope.  As we focus on what we are thankful for, fear, anger, and bitterness simply melt away, seemingly without effort.” –- M.J. Ryan, Attitudes of Gratitude: how to give and receive joy every day of your life.
My theme for May is Gratitude Attitude my two previous programs discussed the 5 Gifts of Gratitude (Generosity, Independence, Belonging, Mastery and Wisdom). So, tonight it’s time to talk about how to get those gifts that insure emotional and spiritual wellness!  Using the wisdom and insights of M.J. Ryan, author of Attitudes of Gratitude, I’ll share 15 different ways in which gratitude can be practiced on a daily basis.  Join me to learn how to strengthen your ability to transcend anxiety addiction and live a more joy-filled life.

  • Mother’s Milk #SamiyyahSaafirMuhammad 323.927.2913
Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing.
While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow.  It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam. Within the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad University, Samiyyah underwent educational training and worked as a teacher’s assistant.
Since 2005, Samiyyah has had the privilege of serving as the Directress at Muhammad University of Islam in Atlanta, which serves students from Pre-K to the eighth grade. She has been blessed to carry on the 84-year educational tradition, which was started by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his brave followers in the 1930’s.
A widow after 35 years of marriage, Samiyyah presently enjoys the blessing of her and her husband’s nine children: six sons and three daughters, all of whom attended or are attending HBCUs. Samiyyah has been a mother to not only her nine children, but also to her two stepchildren, her nieces and nephews, her eight grandchildren and countless other children and adults in the community who come to her for advice, wisdom and guidance. Affectionately called MamaMiyyah, Samiyyah’s house is never empty.
