SHARK WEEK! Great White Sharks!

In this week’s Varmints podcast we’ll revisit Great White Sharks! In Paul and Donna’s first episode together we’re going to dive straight down with these finny denizens of the sea and talk about these marvelously terrifying giant fish.

Here’s some stuff we referenced on the show:

One might think it’s difficult to be stupid around Great White Sharks, I mean, they’re huge and full of sharp teeth. Even if they don’t come after you on purpose, an accidental bite could be pretty awful. Right? The young man in this article apparently thought it was worth the risk. Giant whale carcass, several hungry Great White Sharks having Sunday luncheon, what could possibly go wrong?

Oops.

RAWR! Great White Sharks have rows and rows of dagger-like teeth they can use like fingers. Copyright Andy Brandy Casagrande

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard the theme to Jaws, give it a listen here. It will get you in the mood for amazing Great White Shark facts and fun! Courtesy of YouTube user WEERCK:

Of course, Jaws isn’t the only place Great Whites have surfaced in the stormy seas of pop culture. One of our favorites on Varmints is the large and loveable Bruce from Finding Nemo. Courtesy of YouTube user Renato Dias:

Remember, fish are friends, not food.

No podcast about Great White Sharks would be complete without mentioning one depressing but super important fact. These beautiful creatures are highly sought after and deeply at risk because of over-fishing by humans. The worst offenders supply the market for shark fin soup. The video we talked about the first time we aired this episode is no longer available on YouTube. Instead please watch Gordon Ramsay’s investigation into shark fin soup. Viewer discretion advised for graphic content and Gordon Ramsay language. Courtesy of YouTube user Yum!Yum! Food Network:

Check out this wonderful video of shark diver Jimmy Hall, diving with a large Great White Shark off the coast of Hawaii. This is a rare and beautiful encounter that will take your breath away. Courtesy of YouTube user Tom Peary:

Now you know more about great white sharks than you did when you woke up this morning! What’s your opinion on them? We want to hear from you! Send us your suggestions for animals you’d like to hear us talk about, or just drop us a line about anything at [email protected]! We might even read your fascinating email on the show.

Your feedback is always welcome!

Pacific Rim: Uprising

David and Phil are both fans of the original Pacific Rim, so when the sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising showed up on a streaming service, it seemed like an natural pick for them to make sure they had fun watching something for BBM.  Things… did not go to plan.  Hear the guys talk about a lot of things that aren’t this movie as they run down rabbit holes and tangents in an attempt to discuss something interesting because, for reasons they cannot explain, a movie about giant robots and giant monsters was not able to meet that criteria.

Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat
