  • Eyes Wide Open
Join Rheana Piegols, Michael Handley and our guest Robert Miklos for a full night of progressive politics tonight on Eyes Wide Open!  Robert Miklos is a former Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 101 from 2009 to 2011 when Republicans redistricted his residence outside of HD101 in 2011.  Robert ran in the 2012 election for his new 107 district, but lost because 107 was specifically gerrymandered to defeat him.
Our topics include:  Why do progressives and democrats not vote, particularly for mid-terms?  Are they not attract to (or put off by) the Democratic Party's messaging? Is the Democratic Party's issue focus too narrowly targeting "interest group" issues such as abortion, "black lives matter," immigration, LGBT rights, etc. rather than a wide focus which includes all of these issues in A way that unites us? Should the Democratic Party also add progressive-populist income/economic opportunity/equality issues to their platform?  Is Bernie Sanders good or bad for attracting more people to vote Democratic in 2016?

After calling his mother one day to report he would be crossing the southern boarder to give a friend a ride and reporting to her that his phone was acting up, Toivo promised to call her in a day or so after purchasing a new phone. That was the last time Dr. McKellar heard Toivo's voice. Tune in to Life Happened... today to hear the story from Dr. McKellar and to find out more about helping to find Toivo

  • POZITIVELY DEE HIV/AIDS DISCUSSION
SUNDAYS SHOW POZITIVELY DEE HIV/AIDS DISCUSSION 7:30PM PACIFIC TIME.. Answer this question.. Why should HIV CRIMINALIZATION matter to you? There are individuals having sex now using a condom and they don't know if the person their having sex with is HIV positive. So why is it that when a person who is HIV positive has sex with a condom goes to jail? Not only goes to jail, but gets 20 to 30 years and they used protection. The HIV criminalization laws were put into place in the 80's because there was fear of spreading the virus. Today people living with HIV are living just as long as anyone else, living their lives undetectable and the virus is not spread. Women are having babies now that are not born with the virus. This law has to change and something has to be done

  • Eyes Wide Open
Tonight on Eyes Wide Open we are talking about the historic deal with Iran over nuclear capability and the whacky, alternate reality response from the GOP and the war hawks.  They are coming up with some creative talking points to convince people to reject the Iran Nuclear agreement and the real motivation for this is pretty obvious, especially when so many of them are campaigning against one another for the GOP nomination for president in 2016.  "Walker And Bush Clash Over When To Go After Iran -- Day One Or Two" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/scott-walker-iran-deal_55acfd69e4b0d2ded39f57c2
Sandra Bland story has become the foundation for the "Black Lives Matter" protest against Democratic presidential hopeful Martin O'Malley at Netroots Nation last weekend. They also protested Bernie Sanders' Netroots session.  As the former Mayor of Baltimore, a city with a long history of strong arm police tactics against the Black community, O'Malley was a logical target for the group, but the Governor of Maryland was prime protest target. The protesters also hit Sanders for speaking about class-oriented economic inequality, but not specifically enough about black inequality.

  • Life Happened...
Today on Life Happened...  Family Ties Before, During and After The Storm we remember 10 years into the past and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the impact of the storm and its aftermath on people and families. Host Tawana Cadien was inspired by a recent trip to a family reunion.  A tornado warning forced everyone at the reunion to the basement where they found the Family Bible published in 1850. This storm-shelter find ignited hours of sharing memories and family stories of the past, including the experiences of many family members who survived Katrina. On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina caused 53 different levee breaches in greater New Orleans, submerging eighty percent of the city. The storm surge also devastated the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, making Katrina the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, and the deadliest hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. The total damage from Katrina is estimated at $108 billion. The confirmed death toll is 1,836, with one fatality in Kentucky, two each in Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio, 14 in Florida, 238 in Mississippi, and 1,577 in Louisiana. However, 135 people remain categorized as missing in Louisiana. The hurricane left an estimated three million people without electricity. On September 3, 2005, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff described the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as "probably the worst catastrophe, or set of catastrophes," in the country's history, referring to the hurricane itself plus the flooding of New Orleans. Even in 2010, debris remained in some coastal communities. Now, in 2015, the effects of the devastation remain in the hearts and seared into the memories of many who survived it and many who witnessed the horror unfold and had to wait to render meaningful assistance.
