Ever feel anxiety that makes no sense at all? Your heart starts pounding, your chest feels tight, maybe you get dizzy or flushed out of nowhere… but there’s no obvious trigger. You’re not stressed, you’re not in danger, but your body reacts like it is.
If that sounds familiar, this episode is for you.
Today we’re talking about a surprising root cause behind anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere. It’s called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, or MCAS. And it might be behind the panic, overstimulation, and overwhelm that won’t go away no matter how much you try to relax.
MCAS is a condition where your immune system becomes overly sensitive. Mast cells release histamine and other chemicals when they think you’re in danger. But in MCAS, those cells can overreact to things like food, smells, weather, or stress. And here’s the part most people don’t know—histamine is also a neurotransmitter. It can stimulate your nervous system and actually create feelings of anxiety, dread, or panic, even when your mind feels calm.
In this episode, I’ll walk you through how this process works and why so many women feel like their anxiety doesn’t make sense. We’ll talk about the physical symptoms of histamine-triggered anxiety, like racing thoughts, chest tightness, flushing, lightheadedness, or the urge to escape your own body. These aren’t “just in your head”—they’re real physiological responses that happen when your body is stuck in defense mode.
We’ll also cover some of the most common histamine triggers, including:
- High-histamine foods like leftovers, kombucha, citrus, aged cheese, and vinegar
- Mold exposure, synthetic fragrances, and barometric pressure changes
- Chronic emotional stress, overstimulation, and people-pleasing
- Hormonal shifts before your period or during perimenopause
It’s not about cutting out everything. The real goal is to lower your body’s reactivity so it stops treating everyday things like threats. I’ll share gentle first steps to start calming your system, including nervous system-safe breathwork, simple food swaps, hydration tips, and symptom tracking to help you spot patterns without obsessing.
This is the kind of work I do every day in my practice. We use functional medicine testing to look at histamine load, cortisol rhythm, inflammation, gut health, and nervous system stress. And inside my Nervous System Healing Code program, I guide women through the exact tools and steps to support their body, feel safe again, and finally experience relief.
