"Across the Square" imagines an encounter between two sharply contrasting women, each leading very different lives. Ottoline is surrounded by a vast circle of friends that includes Prime Ministers, novelists, painters, and philosophers, while Millicent has devoted her entire life to the campaign for women’s suffrage.

"On December 22, 1917, there is a knock at the door of leading suffragist Millicent Garrett Fawcett’s home at 2 Gower Street, Bloomsbury. Lady Ottoline Morrell, a patron of the Bloomsbury Group, has crossed the square from her home at 44 Bedford Square to express her condolences for the loss of a much-loved sister."

Recognising emotions and introducing healthy ways to transform them could elevate our well‑being.

St George’s Gardens were once the graveyard for two local churches, St George’s Bloomsbury and St George the Martyr in Queen Square.

The Friends of St George’s Gardens have been researching people in the graveyard and telling their stories for several years. Charles Dilly, 1739-1807, is their latest find. He and his brother Edward ran a very successful publishing and bookselling business, close to St Paul’s. They specialised in dissenting works and supported American independence. Charles ran the firm on his own after Edward died in 1779. The firm was successful partly because it looked after its authors so well. The Dictionary of National Biography says that they ‘practically adopted’ James Boswell and that their dinner parties were ‘legendary’.
