  • 78 - Andrew Coates Knows All Things Muscle & Fitness
As much as possible, trainers should make our media about our clients (and the people we seek to serve). But here are some important details about me and my career
Graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Commerce(Co-op) Honours.
Grew up as a competitive cross-country skier, basketball player, and dabbled in many other sports. Became a die hard fitness enthusiast in my early 20’s.
Began my career as a certified personal trainer in the fall of 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta.
19000+ client coaching hours and counting.
Devotion to reading and studying everything I’m able to find time for, about fitness, nutrition, behaviour change, and anything related to a career in the fitness industry.
Owner of Andrew Coates Fitness, founded in January of 2017 and contracting at Evolve Strength South.
Currently split my days between Evolve and my home studio in south Edmonton.
Host of The Lift Free and Diet Hard Podcast with Andrew Coates (formerly The Fitness Devil with my friend and co-host Dean Guedo. A weekly show of discussions with fitness industry leaders.
Fitness Writer for not only my website here but for major fitness publications including T-Nation, The PTDC, Generation Iron, and TrueCoach, with more in the works.
Cofounder and MC of The Evolve Canadian Strength Symposium, an Edmonton Fitness Conference featuring industry leading speakers including cofounder Dean Somerset, Lee Boyce, and more.
Mentor of a small group of fitness professionals around the world.
I post daily ideas and fitness industry philosophy on my rapidly growing Instagram account @andrewcoatesfitness. You can follow me on Twitter but I mostly just use it to create graphics for IG.
I’ll probably mess around more with YouTube but don’t hold me to it (I mean this list is getting absurdly long)
I have a fluffy black cat named Ozzy who’s the star of my Instagram.
I love the band Tool, the world of The Witcher(games, books, show), Books, and good Highland Single Malt Scotch
I coach the general population. That means everyday people who want to get stronger and feel better. I work with some young athletes, people with wildly ranging goals, and older adults. Competitive physique or strength sports aren’t my passion or wheel house so I’m happy to refer competitors to a network of professionals I trust.
I’ll be coaching people well into retirement age. I love being able to do such fulfilling and meaningful work every day (I usually work 7 days a week).

  • 77 - Functional Medicine Fun w/Drs Emily & Chris from Miami
Dr. Emily Rowe goes beyond the world of conventional medicine by combining intellect with intuition, holding multiple paradigms in her mind simultaneously. Utilizing a customized client-centered approach, she digs deeply into the root causes of diseases, using cutting-edge laboratories and awareness of how ecological toxins can effect health. She embodies empathy for her clients, as she has personal experience with medical issues related to environmentally acquired illnesses. Treatment plans for her clients are individually created, and often combine a variety of methods including physiological detoxification strategies, eradication of stealth infections, vibrational resonance healings, meditation, hypnotherapy, medical astrological analysis, and ancient wisdom practices, such as Shamanism, acupuncture, and herbal medicines. As a result of her work as a healer, there is a higher level of conscious awareness of the environmental ramifications of toxins on chronic inflammatory illnesses, leading to insights about macrocosmic-microcosmic relationships and profound healing, and true etiological resolution.
Emily T. Rowe graduated from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2004. After a brief time in the field of Internal Medicine, she became frustrated with the Western approach to illness. She realized that she was being trained to treat the symptoms of disease and its end-stage complications, while failing to address its root cause. Inspired to find a comprehensive and definitive way to heal her patients, she went back to school and completed her Master’s Degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture and became ceritifed inn functional medicine with the Institute of Functional Medicine. She has extensively studied with Dr Richard Horowitz for Lyme and Dr Neil Nathan for mold toxicity. She holds certifications in yoga, hypnotherapy and Shamanism.
She specializes in treating patients who have exhausted or failed Western medical therapies for chronic conditions.
Dr. Christopher Estes is a board certified OB/GYN and functional medicine physician. After spending over a decade working at all levels of the conventional medical system, he became increasingly frustrated with its limitations and the lack of progress he saw with so many of his patients, especially those with the most complicated medical issues. This, combined with personal experiences with environmental toxicity and chronic infections, spurred him to go back to school and develop a better way to practice medicine. He became an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Provider then continued to dive deeper into learning about treating environmental toxicities, Lyme disease and related infections. He has also introduced advanced IV nutritional therapies, ozone therapies, quantum biofeedback, platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapies. Further, he integrates energetic and psycho-spiritual practices in his work using sound healing and shamanic techniques. Chris is on a lifelong journey to continue learning new modalities to treat his patients and help them meet their health goals using a fully integrated approach from Western medical science to ancient healing traditions. He is incredibly grateful to his wife and partner in medical practice, Emily Rowe, MD, AP. Together, they own and operate Miami Beach Comprehensive Wellness Center, a healing space for people who have been failed by the conventional medical system and anyone seeking an alternative to the inadequacies of routine medical care.

  • 74 - Mental Performance Coaching - Equipped 2 Evolve w/Jared Cohen
Jared is a mental performance coach whose personal philosophy, passion, and purpose is to EQUIP people to become extraordinary lifelong learners about themselves, their relationships, and their pursuits, so that they are more capable of living interesting, fulfilling and meaningful lives.
Jared's professional coaching journey began in 2006 when he was an overnight camp counselor. In 2010, his perspective on coaching widened as he began pursuing CrossFit. Since then, he has been incredibly active training and coaching at the intersection of health/wellness, fitness, human performance, and organizational psychology--in particular, executive coaching and leadership development.
Prior to earning his MBA, with an emphasis on organizational psychology, and a Master’s in Sport and Performance Psychology, Jared was a seasoned, enthusiastic, and dedicated CrossFit, Olympic Weightlifting, and Mobility coach.
Currently, Jared specializes in equipping clients with a plethora of mental models and skills-based practices to fast track their ability to leverage their experience and accelerate their expertise. Moreover, he delivers customized leadership and human dynamics trainings for executive teams to help them examine how they operate and provide them with frameworks for evolving their mindsets and behaviors.
Jared has worked with athletes, fitness enthusiasts/coaches, business owners/executives, newly promoted leaders/managers, physicians, musicians, call-center operators, and government employees. Fun fact: For one year, Jared worked as a cognitive enhancement coach for TSA officers to help them improve their working memory, reaction time speed and accuracy, heart rate variability, and overall vigilance and wellbeing.
Jared regularly blogs about his three favorite "L" words--learning, leadership, and life, and is working on a book that maps out and synthesizes what all personal development journeys require for someone to go from authenticity to adaptability.
When not coaching, training, reading, and/or writing, you can find Jared geeking out about John Mayer, The Grateful Dead, and Marvel movies. Topics covered: 1. Infinite vs. Finite Games (Why we should view life as long, as opposed to life is short).
    2. "What" questions are more effective than "how" questions.
    3. If you are going to demand better of yourself or someone else, it helps to have conviction about your compelling point of view or to ask someone else about their compelling point of view.
