It is one thing to work with a President from the other party and be the loyal opposition that is often getting in the news for being opposed to the President. It is another to be your President's leader on the House floor pushing through his agenda, especially when you are in the minority. That is the position that Gerald Ford will be in for much of the Presidency of Richard Nixon. He was the President's lead lieutenant in the House of Representatives.
Richard Nixon assumed the Presidency as the first President since Zachary Taylor, with both houses of Congress in the opposition hands. Somehow , Nixon got a lot of things done, and his domestic record of accomplishments is actually very strong, despite the handicap of being a minority party President and a President often seen as an enemy to the Democratic Party.
Some of that long list of accomplishments can be attributed to the legislative skill of his Minority Leader, Gerald Ford. In this episode we will listen in as the two men work on many things in the first Administration. It was there that Richard Nixon laid the groundwork for his place as one of our five Greatest American Leaders in the history of our country.
It is here that we will get a small dose of the role Gerald Ford played in all that success.

In this episode you will get to see how the sausage is made. We feature several phone calls between two of the nation's consummate legislators, Lyndon Johnson, 36th President of the United States (A Democrat) and Representative Gerald Ford, the House Republican Leader. You will get to see some serious wheeling and dealing on the grandest of stages.
While LBJ had had a long and personally friendly relationship with Republican Senate Leader Senator Everett Dirksen, his relationship with Gerald Ford had been testy at times. Johnson famously had once said "That Gerald Ford had played too many football games without a helmet". But fate had put them together, during a very tumultuous, and important moment in American History. and just like with Dirksen, Johnson needed Ford's help. In this episode you will hear Johnson ask for it and occasionally apply a lot of that famous mixture of charm and personality to the Republican House Leader.
So sit back and enjoy the ride as we listen in on Gerald Ford as he works with Lyndon Johnson.

In our season premier of Season 9 we begin our look back at "Gerald Ford: The Accidental President" as we look at his overall time as President and his film "A Time To Heal" which was also the name of his book. Then we go back to the beginning of our long look at the 1960's and 1970's to the subject of our first episode on the subject. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy and Gerald Ford's role in The Warren Commission and its report on what exactly happened on that fateful day in Dallas, Texas.
This episode begins our 14 episode retrospective on the Ford Administration and the career of the former President. We hope to show you his many examples of leadership that helped restore America's faith in its government. We do highlight things in his administration that we had not already covered during our presentation on Richard Nixon. So in a way we will be able to show you things during these episodes that you may have forgotten about his two and one half years in office.
He was a consequential figure, and his impact is still felt today in the many figures who went from his Administration on into the future to hold enormously large places in our history including a United States President (George Bush) , a Vice President (Dick Cheney) , a Senate Majority Leader (Bob Dole) , and numerous cabinet figures (Donald Rumsfeld and James Baker to name two) who would serve in subsequent administrations.
Though his most important contribution may very well be the personal example he set for leaders into the future that the job of President could be conducted in an honest and transparent way with a lot of humility too.

For all of the folks who have said to me that our long documentary on Watergate and the massive evidence of alleged prosecutorial misconduct just did not seem plausible. This special edition is for you. It is a story I had not heard before until our podcast's friend , Geoff Shepard, sent the story to me and then I proceeded to research it.
It is the story of one of greatest injustices ever perpetuated on a group of our soldiers, accusing three African American fighting men of murder, and causing 47 more, all African Americans, to face trial and court martial for a riot in November of 1944. It would be another 64 years before this injustice was ever set straight. An early investigation had been conducted of the events in question before the Army Prosecutor had been sent to work on the case and that investigation had cleared every single African American soldier involved of any wrong doing.
But the Prosecutor decided to prosecute all of them anyway, even though he knew of the report that said they were all innocent men. He actively hid the report refusing to turn it over to a rushed Defense Team knowing they only had 10 days to prepare their case. It was a travesty of American Justice.
That prosecutor was named Leon Jaworski and the case has many earie similarities to the long national nightmare of Watergate, we just chronicled in our last three season series. This is a sad, sad , story. A story that brings new insight to the massive amount of new evidence that has emerged that shows that Richard Nixon, and many of his top aids, may not have been as guilty as we have all been led to believe for the past half century.

In part three of "The Randal Wallace Show" we bring you the conclusion of the fight for the Speakership of United States House of Representatives. In this episode, we see the negotiations begin to finally bring the debate to a close. Representative Kevin McCarthy gives in to several of the requests of the conservative wing of the Party. But just when you think a deal has been done Representative Matt Goetz throws' a monkey-wrench into the works.
That leads to one of the most dramatic things seen in politics on the House floor in years as one representative has to be physically restrained all while a former President steps in to push the resisters into a final deal. It is high drama on the floor of the House.
Then we bring you the final speeches and draw this extraordinary civic lesson to a close,

Coming on February 20, 2023, The "Randal Wallace Presents Podcast" begins our 9th season with a very special look back at Gerald R. Ford, 38th President of the United States. He was the only man in the history of the Presidency that was never elected to either the Presidency nor the Vice Presidency. He was the Accidental President.
Over 14 episodes we'll look back at his time in office that has proven to have been a time of enormous consequence. He was more than just a caretaker President. He restored people's trust in government, pardoned his predecessor, presided over the final days of the Vietnam War, tried to get our economic house in order, and finally fought and almost pulled off one of the great political "come from behind" campaigns in all of American History.
He was a good and decent man, and a perfect example of the qualities we should all look for in a leader. You will get to see it in full display right here in the the first 14 episodes of our 9th season as we tackle the extraordinary life, career, and Presidency of Gerald Ford.

We are very appreciative and want to say thank you to The Federalist Society for allowing us to use the symposium in its entirety and again we want to thank Geoff Shepard for the use of all of his materials from his three books which are available at his website ShepardonWatergate.com
This episode is the fourth 45 minutes of the event and it will cover the partisan choice of defendants where they indicted prominent Republicans , Chuck Colson, who were arguably not that involved and decided not to indict prominent Democrats, like Howard Hunt's Lawyer William Bittman.
This will also be the final episode in our long series on the tumultuous era of the 1960's and early 1970s including the assassination of a President, the Civil Rights Movement, The Vietnam War, the Presidency of Lyndon Johnson, the Presidency of Richard Nixon and the Watergate Scandal.
This is a great companion to and a much more succinct presentation of the materials we covered throughout our podcast documentary.
Just an FYI there are moments when a CLE code is played and it sounds like an Emergency broadcast test.
We appreciate all of you who have tuned in throughout the past five seasons and we especially want to thank Geoff Shepard for all of his help in putting this entire series on Watergate together. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have played a small part in teaching the public the true facts about a great man who served as our 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon.

We begin our third season on Bob Dole's life and career, by traveling back in time to his April 1995 Presidential Campaign Announcement. At that point the Republican Party was on the rise…
In our third of four seasons, we will look back at Bob Dole's 1995 as he takes off into the Presidential campaign, while also trying to manage Congress. A Congress full of unruly new Republican firebrands in the House under their revolutionary Speaker Newt Gingrich. We will listen as that struggle between the Republican Establishment, the new House Republicans under Gingrich, and the Liberal Democrats in Congress, all converge into a battle for power, all of which allows Bill Clinton to perform one of the most dramatic political comebacks in all of American History.
We invite you to come along with us on a wild ride through the high points and low moments of modern American History, in an effort to show the citizens of today that we are an amazing and resilient nation.
