We are very appreciative and want to say thank you to The Federalist Society for allowing us to use the symposium in its entirety and again we want to thank Geoff Shepard for the use of all of his materials from his three books which are available at his website ShepardonWatergate.com
This episode is the third 45 minutes of the event and it will cover a bombshell circumstantial witness in the form of panelist and legal giant Judge Laurence Silberman for the charge of a rigged appellate court " en banc" hearing of cases during the Watergate Scandal , plus abuses of evidence in defiance of the Brady requirements including the star witness John Dean's story changes all hidden from the Defense Attorneys in the case.
This is a great companion to and a much more succinct presentation of the materials we covered throughout our podcast documentary.
Just an FYI there are moments when a CLE code is played and it sounds like an Emergency broadcast test.

In this special edition we look back at a giant of the American Justice System. Laurence Silberman is a man most people, including me, had probably never heard of unless you were knowledgeable about the law. I was introduced to him because he was on a panel examining the massive evidence of prosecutorial misconduct that the 2013 Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by Geoff Shepard had uncovered. It was a symposium on the papers of Watergate hosted by The Federalist Society.
That Symposium will be featured on our podcast all next week. The legal experts that are participating in that symposium are impressive to say the least. we are honored that The Federalist Society has granted our show permission to share the event with you.
Sadly, just over two weeks after the symposium Judge Silberman passed away at age 86. The suddenness of his passing had me curious to learn more about him, when I did , I realized that this man was an impressive one.
In this episode, we will hear from Judge Laurence Silberman on a range of topics including, his role in protecting the second amendment in a ruling that struck down the Washington D.C. gun policy, his thoughts on free speech in this modern age, the Rowe v Wade decision, His thoughts on the court system, the number of lawyers in the United States, and his role as a co-chair on the special committee that looked into the second Gulf War and how we got involved in it.
This is one fascinating episode about one of the most fascinating individuals in modern American History and a man that almost no one in the general public has even heard of, until now.
It is a tribute to a giant.

In this episode I thought it would be interesting to go back and listen to the other Presidents who have made recordings during the history of Presidential recordings. It wasn't just Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon that took advantage of the new technology of the 20th century.
Here you will get to have a window on history as we listen in on a couple of the great crisis of the 20th century, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty negotiations, plus briefing the former Presidents on policy as well. It is a window on the Presidency itself. We will hear from Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman, and Herbert Hoover. We will also get to hear Presidents performing the ceremonial parts of the job as Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan make calls to outer space and, in the case of LBJ, we will get to hear him talk to a man who had been underwater for nearly a month.
Plus we will get to eavesdrop on the Secret Service while they deal with the scariest of moments for anyone in security, the attempted assassination of a President. I thought this was an interesting an enlightening show and thought you would enjoy it as well.
For it was not just Nixon who recorded himself doing the job of President.

In Former President Richard Nixon's final book "Beyond Peace" he often wrote like a psychic of some kind. He wrote:
“The United States must lead. We must lead to open the eyes of those still blinded by despotism, to emboldened those who remain oppressed, and bring out from the dungeons of tyranny those who still live in darkness. The question remains whether the United States will meet its responsibilities of leadership beyond peace as it did to defeat the communists in the Cold War. History thrusts certain powers at certain times on to center stage. In this era, the spotlight shines on the United States. How long it stays with us – – and how brightly it shines – – will be determined by us alone.
“Peace demands more, not less, from a people. Peace lacks the clarity of purpose in the cadence of war…. Our contact at home and abroad will determine how well we improvise beyond peace.”
"The failure of freedom would also have a profoundly negative global impact. The reestablishment of a dictatorship and a command economy in Russia would give encouragement to every dictator and would-be dictator in the world. Since an authoritarian Russia would be far more likely to adopt an aggressive foreign policy than a democratic Russia, freedom’s failure would threaten peace and stability in Europe and around the world. If Russia turns away from democracy and economic freedom and we have not done everything possible to prevent it, we will bear a large measure of responsibility for the ominous consequences."
Page 40
"at the same time, the West must take note of warning signs on the horizon. Russian military thinking is becoming more nationalistic and more assertive in defense of Russia’s interests in the other former Soviet states bordering on Russia, and more supportive of the use of military force as an instrument of foreign policy. Russian policy toward other post-Soviet nations represents the greatest dilemma for the United States. A new attempt by Moscow to rebuild its empire would be a tragedy for Russia and its neighbors alike. In view of the Russian-Soviet historical legacy, it is understandable that Russia’s neighbors are sensitive to any signs of new assertiveness on Moscow’s part."
Page 61
"I am convinced that the Russian people will not turn back to communism. But if they have no choice, they will turn to some kind of political dictatorship, which will at least promise the safety-net guarantees that were supposed to have been delivered by the communist regime."
Page 81
It seems he wrote about how to help Russia enter the 21st century and he wrote about what could happen if we failed to help them. What he described on page 81 of his book sounds almost exactly like a perfect description of what did eventually happen in Russia and the rise of Vladamir Putin. In this episode we will listen to a casual interview President Nixon had on Russia, the old Soviet Union, and how to deal with them in the post Cold War, and it sounds like a lesson that can still be applied today.

In this episode we look back on President Nixon's relationships with three world leaders who were very important to the United States during his administration. No world leader in history was as well traveled as President Richard Nixon and few, if any, knew the world better. During President Nixon's retirement years Nixon was often called upon to comment upon the passing of several World Leaders and their impact on the world stage. You will hear some of those comments here in this episode.
In one case, it was Richard Nixon who wanted to send a message to the current American President , Jimmy Carter, and the rest of the western world, that we should never forget our friends in their time of need. This was very much true in the case of the Shah of Iran. The Shah was deposed in January of 1979, and the region he had helped stabilize was thrown into chaos. Carter's treatment of the Shah was in a word, shameful , and Richard Nixon held his feet to the fire. It was only after the Shah was diagnosed with cancer that he was allowed to seek refuge here for treatment, which led to the Embassy in Tehran being overrun by militant Islamic terrorists and our diplomats being taken as hostages.
It was Richard Nixon that went to Mexico to see the Shah and then went personally to his funeral in Egypt to say to the world that America never forgets a friend. It was Richard Nixon showing the foreign policy leadership lacking by the then current occupant in the White House.
Then after the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, Richard Nixon was called on again by the new President Ronald Reagan to represent the United States to the world. Reagan tapped all three former living Presidents, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter to attend the Sadat funeral, but it was clearly Nixon that was the towering figure to the world. It marked Nixon's return to the world stage and he was greeted by a grateful world that had always revered him, and marveled at just how the United States could have ever deposed such an extraordinary leader.
Finally we will take a look at the man who was on the other side of the Cold War for much of the most important years of the struggle. For two decades the Soviet Union and the entire Communist World was dominated by Leonid Brezhnev. Here we will look back at him, his leadership, and his impact on the world stage. We will hear from President Richard Nixon on Nightline the night the Soviet leader died and listen to his thoughts on this formidable leader who represented the other side of the Cold War for so long.

This is the first episode in our series of bonus materials. This is a listen at the news coverage from President Nixon's last day in office. During our regular series I chose to use the coverage from CBS News because it is more recognizable to the public. The familiar voices of Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather are what I chose to put in the documentary but I actually prefer the coverage of ABC News which was the last place network at the time of the events of Watergate.
I have found ABC News, consistently, for over a half century, to be a much fairer broadcast than any of the other networks of the time period or , frankly, than any of the networks today as well. They have the highest standards of fairness of any of the networks or cable channels. Even though they have their moments too, and the political arm is currently run by a Democratic operative that worked for Bill Clinton.
Still it is hard to understand how Walter Cronkite came to be known as the most trusted man in America when the title really should have been given to Howard K. Smith. In this episode, we will let you listen to the coverage from ABC News of the events of the final day. Plus, once again, you will get to hear the President's rather magnificent speech given at his lowest moment.
An episode that showcases the end of the Nixon era and just before the start of the era of Gerald Ford.

In our second part of our two part series in honor of Barbara Walters we look back at her great partnership with 20/20 co-host the legendary Hugh Downs. It was Hugh Downs who as a host on the NBC Show "Today" pointed out Barbara Walters as a talent that needed to be given an opportunity on the air. It was a partnership that lasted for five decades off and on, first at NBC and then for a quarter century on ABC's 20/20.
They were one of televisions great teams. so for those of you with only vague memories of these two television icons together we present you the two of them at the top of their game in 1996.
The campaign of 1996. was the campaign of my lifetime that featured my political hero Bob Dole challenging Bill Clinton for the Presidency of the United States. It was just six weeks out from the November election. 20/20 decided to profile them both on two Fridays during the general election. i could think of no better example of all the things I have tried to stress as to why Barbara Walters was simply the best journalist in the business.
It shows her fairness to one Republican and one Democrat, it shows her skill at asking tough questions in a way nobody found offensive, it showed her ability to humanize her subjects instead of playing to any caricatures the public might have had about them, and finally it shows just how well the team of Walters and Hugh Downs worked together in these two examples from the show they hosted.
It is is a great look back at these icons of journalistic and presidential history from the most important year of my life, 1996.

The first of two very special editions in honor of ABC News journalist Barbara Walters. This show looks back at her career and it showcases her fairness. She covered countless entertainers, sports figures, and leaders at home and abroad. Some of them incredibly controversial. She treated all of them with remarkable fairness even a few who were routinely treated horribly unfairly by her colleagues.
Two that come to mind immediately were Richard Nixon and Donald Trump.
We will look back at examples of her time covering them and a list of other Presidential figures. Plus we will see her rise to network anchor at ABC News, that was nearly derailed by an angry collogue and fellow anchor Harry Reasoner. In the end, she overcame it, shattering the glass ceiling for women in journalism, and ended up having had one of the great careers in the history of television.
She was an icon, and one of, if not certainly, my favorite journalist of all time.

We begin our third season on Bob Dole's life and career, by traveling back in time to his April 1995 Presidential Campaign Announcement. At that point the Republican Party was on the rise…
In our third of four seasons, we will look back at Bob Dole's 1995 as he takes off into the Presidential campaign, while also trying to manage Congress. A Congress full of unruly new Republican firebrands in the House under their revolutionary Speaker Newt Gingrich. We will listen as that struggle between the Republican Establishment, the new House Republicans under Gingrich, and the Liberal Democrats in Congress, all converge into a battle for power, all of which allows Bill Clinton to perform one of the most dramatic political comebacks in all of American History.
We invite you to come along with us on a wild ride through the high points and low moments of modern American History, in an effort to show the citizens of today that we are an amazing and resilient nation.
