  • Episode 6: Tom Daschle, Trent Lott & Ernest Hollings - Solutions

    Send us Fan Mail

Episode 6 changes our focus from examining the relationships of several figures of the era to looking at concrete solutions to the divisions gripping our government and our society, These ideas come from interviews from two books written by United States Senators.

"Crisis Point" by two former  Senate Majority Leaders from different parties, Tom Daschle and Trent Lott.  They discuss the need to return to regular order, and a five day work week for Congress. They stress the power of relationships and the need to create an atmosphere to foster them across party lines. A return to the old school of politics.

"Making Government Work Again" by the late Senator Ernest Hollings, here he discusses the influence of money in the system and ways to change it. Plus his ideas about trade and the influence of the media on our politics and our society.

Plus a look at a shameful event and smear campaign against U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein from within her own party for simply reaching across the aisle and being nice to a collogue on the Judiciary Committee. Why we should resist the temptation to just pick sides and penalize those who do try and make our system work again.

  • Episode 5: Dan Inouye and Ted Stevens: They called each other Brothers

    Send us Fan Mail

The extraordinary relationship of Senator Dan Inouye of Hawaii, a Democrat, and Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska , a Republican. Together they traded places on the Senate Appropriations Committee Leadership and the Senate Appropriation Armed Services subcommittee leadership, and they made sure that no matter who was in charge of Congress and the White House, each others states had a friend to make sure they were never hurt.

They built the modern day states of Hawaii and Alaska, and they funded up the modern military. They showed the world what can be accomplished by two friends, even if they were often on opposite sides of political issues and in opposite political parties.

They often called each other, brother.

  • Episode 4: Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil : Never stop working at it

    Send us Fan Mail

Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil were not friends and had never even met. Yet, fate would land them on opposite ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. One was a staunch Conservative the other a Boston Liberal. It looked like nothing but constant stalemate was on the agenda. But together they made the 1980's roar.

And they became friends after 6 o'clock.

They also turned our economy around, saved Social Security and brought down Communism. A remarkable set of accomplishments for two people so totally opposite. The key was not only mutual respect and trust but the fact that no matter what, they never stopped trying to make it work. A lesson our current leaders could use to make our system work today.

  • Episode 3: Lyndon Johnson and Everett Dirksen : Trust and Respect

    Send us Fan Mail

Two old friends from when one was a brand new Congressman and the other a congressional elevator operator. But fate would land one in the White House through assassination, and it would coincide with the culmination of 100 years of struggle for civil rights in America.

Lyndon Johnson would make it his priority to "finish what Lincoln began" but to do it he would have to turn to an old friend, from a different political party, another man like Lincoln, from Illinois, Everett Dirksen , the Republican Leader, to get it done.

Here watch them horse-trade and maneuver past a maze of obstacles to get the 1964 Civil Right's Act and the 1965 Voter's Rights Act passed, two of the most important pieces of legislation in all of American History.

  • Episode 2: Joe Biden : The Power of Relationships: Thurmond, McCain and McConnell

    Send us Fan Mail

The 46th President of the United States Joseph R.  Biden has set an extraordinary example of the power of relationships through out his long career. He was first elected at age 29 to the United States Senate and through his entire career has made reaching across the aisle its hallmark.

Here we look back at  three of the unique relationships that he has formed and the example they set for all of our leaders today about reaching across the aisle , making a difference, and having your friends stick with you in crisis.

Profiled here is his friendship with Senator Strom Thurmond, Senator John McCain and finally a look back  at a very divisive battle in the late 1980s over the Supreme Court Nomination of Robert Bork,  where Biden's philosophy of not making enemies out of political adversaries may actually pay benefits in the coming months with another old friend, The Senate Leader of the Republicans, Mitch McConnell.

  • Episode 1: Strom Thurmond : A Conscious Decision to Change and Helping People

    Send us Fan Mail

The first episode in our Podcast documentary and first season in production features an introduction to our series , which will be profiling various leaders from the last half of the 20th Century , and the lessons in leadership we so desperately need to learn  from them.

In this first episode, we profile a surprising figure, Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. He began his career as an Education Superintendent in Edgefield, South Carolina, then became a Judge, then landed at D-Day in a glider, helped liberate Nazi Concentration Camps, and came home to be elected a State Senator , Governor and, as a write in candidate, to the United States Senate. He would serve for 48 years until he reached the age of 100. He was a staunch Segregationist, who once talked on the Senate floor for 24 hours and 18 minutes in opposition to the 1957 Civil Rights Bill.

But as the world changed, and South Carolina changed, he changed with it. He made a conscious decision to change and this symbol of the Old South became instrumental in opening the door to the New South. It was an enormously important decision to change, whether  sincere or calculated, and it sets an example many of us can learn from about not fighting the same old battles over and over again.

The Preview ads for shows 2 through 9.  The documentary goes through various examples of lessons we can learn from the Leadership of the war era young men who went on to create the American Century.  It re-examines the contributions they made and how our next generation of leaders can use their example for creating the next American Century.

The first Show is an introduction to the documentary series and a look at Senator Strom Thurmond and his example of making a conscious decision to change, not to continue to fight lost battles, and his example of a public servant helping people.  It does discuss his role in segregation and the 1948 campaign as well.
