On Wednesday, an immigrant detainee was killed and two others injured by a sniper, who then killed himself, outside of an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas. Although only detainees were targeted and no one else was harmed, the Trump administration immediately began telling the media that the attack was against ICE agents. FBI director Kash Patel claimed that the bullet casings had the word "ANTI-ICE" written on them. The shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, but nothing is yet known about his motive. In other news, about approximately 1,200 detainees held at the Florida detention facility called "Alligator Alcatraz" are now missing. The facility was temporarily shut down due to safety concerns, and in the process hundreds of detainees have disappeared from the government's database. Around 800 detainees showed no record on ICE's online database. More than 450 listed no location and only instructed the user to "Call ICE for details," which attorneys say could mean that a detainee is still being processed, in the middle of a transfer between two sites or about to be deported.
On Saturday, California governor Gavin Newsom passed five new laws that challenge the power of law enforcement officials, especially in the context of the civil rights violations committed by ICE. The laws ban officers from wearing face masks while performing their duties, require them to openly display their agency and name or badge number, ban officers from entering schools and hospitals without a judicial warrant, and require schools and colleges to notify parents when ICE is on a campus. The laws don't go into effect until next year, and will likely be challenged in court because it is unclear how much power the State has over federal agencies. The Trump administration has maintained its position that ICE agents must wear masks because activists, who the administration refers to as "terrorist sympathizers," have posted the names of ICE agents on the Internet. Since ICE agents began wearing masks in public earlier this year, it is likely that this is the first time in US history that a law enforcement agency admits to hiding the identity of its arresting officers who engage with the public.
On Wednesday, Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said during a real estate conference that the Gaza Strip was a "real estate bonanza" and that "a business plan is on President Trump's table." Israel's occupation and settlement of Palestinian Territories since 1948 is illegal according to international law. Since October 7th, 2023, Israel has been bombing and ethnically cleansing the Gaza Strip, claiming that they are targeting members of the Hamas organization. But several Israeli officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have made clear that total annexation of the Gaza Strip into Israel's borders is the goal of the campaign. In the past two weeks, Israel has begun bombing residential buildings in Gaza City, killing hundreds of people and forcing thousands more to relocate. During the real estate conference, Smotrich said, "We paid a lot of money for the war, so we need to decide how to divide the percentages of the land in Gaza. The demolition phase is always the first phase of urban renewal. We did that, now we need to start building."
On Friday, ICE agents shot and killed Silverio Villegas González, an undocumented 38-year-old man from Michoacán, Mexico. Officials immediately released information to the media, saying that Villegas González had attempted to hit officers with his car, and that one agent was "dragged a significant distance" and had to shoot Villegas González to save his own life. However, security footage shows two plainclothes agents approaching the vehicle which had been blocked from moving by an unmarked SUV. The vehicle eventually reverses away from the two agents, and the officer on the passenger side points his firearm at the vehicle. Villegas González then drives forward away from the agents, not towards them, and the agent on the passenger side aims his weapon at the back of the car. In a separate video, two gunshots can be heard. The second agent is not visible during the shooting, and it remains unclear which agent fired their weapon. Videos on social media show that the car crashed into a semitruck about 100 feet away from the initial traffic stop. The two agents then ran to the scene, apparently uninjured.
After two weeks of protests, young people in Nepal held an independent online election to choose their new real-world national leaders via a massive vote on the video game app Discord. In early September, widespread frustration with government corrupted was highlighted by the "nepo baby" online trend, wherein the youth of Nepal's rich and powerful families showed off their lavish lifestyles via social media. Growing anger among the population led to the government banning social media platforms. This triggered mass protests among young people, coordinated mainly via Discord. On September 8th, 51 people were killed in confrontations between protesters and police. The next day, protesters burned down every major government building including the Parliament, Congress, and Supreme Court buildings. and the homes of the prime minister and the president. The protesters also attacked prisons and set the prisoners free. Prime Minster K. P. Sharma Oli eventually stepped down, and Sushila Karki was appointed the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal by vote via Discord.
The Trump administration has responded to the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. On Thursday, President Trump chose to attend a memorial service for Kirk instead of a ceremony commemorating victims of 9 /11 and announced that he would be awarding Kirk with a Medal of Honor. Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau announced, "Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country. I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action. Please feel free to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention." At a press conference, FBI Director Kash Patel said about Kirk,"I'll see you in Valhalla. Valhalla is an afterlife in Norse mythology and is sometimes referenced by military veterans. Patel was raised Hindu and Kirk was a Christian and neither of them has served in the military. However, Norse imagery is often used by white supremacists. The white supremacist who killed 51 people in mosques in New Zealand in 2019 wrote in his suicide note, "I will see you all in Valhalla."
On Wednesday, Charlie Kirk, one of the largest right wing influencers on the Internet, was shot during his presentation at Utah Valley University. Video footage of the incident was captured live by official channels as well as individuals live-streaming the event via their phones. At the time of this writing it is unclear what his condition is and whether a suspect has been arrested, but it is known that the single bullet that hit him was shot from a building hundreds of yards from the stage where he was sitting. Kirk is the founder of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization that advocates for right wing politics on high school, college, and university campuses. He became famous for his controversial and divisive right wing commentary, and for his YouTube videos in which he debates progressive students on college campuses. Kirk is often credited with helping the Trump administration attract young voters. Regarding gun control, Kirk famously said "I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights."
Last week, the Trump administration bombed a boat in Venezuela, killing 11 people, and claimed without evidence that it was carrying drugs to the United States. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world. Its oil industry was controlled by American and European companies for most of the 20th century, until Hugo Chavez's "Bolivarian Revolution" nationalized it. In 2002, the US supported a coup of Hugo Chavez, and has been supporting regime change in Venezuela since. Headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Trump administration is justifying its current efforts by claiming that they are targeting drug cartels. Officials have provided no evidence that the boat that the US bombed had any ties to drug trafficking, and experts have noted that a small boat transporting drugs would not be carrying 11 people, since it would be a waste of valuable physical space that would need to be used to transporting as much contraband as possible. It is also unlikely that such a small boat would have enough fuel to reach Florida, the closest US territory to Venezuela.
The Department of Justice has released thousands of documents from what is known as The Epstein Files, related to deceased billionaire Jeffrey Epstein who trafficked children for sexual abuse among the richest and most powerful people in the world. During a private meeting between some of Epstein's victims and a House of Representatives committee, Republican Representative Nancy Mace was seen leaving the room in tears. Mace, who is also a victim of sexual assault, later stated on social media that testimony from the victims had caused her to have a panic attack. The Department of Justice has released 33,000 pages of Epstein documents, but Democratic lawmakers have claimed that 97% of those documents had been previously released. Last month, Epstein's collaborator Ghislane Maxwell, who is currently in prison, met with the Department of Justice and claims that Donald Trump, who was famously close friends with Epstein, had no involvement in any of Epstein's crimes, raising the question of whether Ghislane is making a deal for her release.
These are the KBBF news bulletin updates for September 1st. Flock, the company that has been contracted by thousands of cities in the US to install traffic cameras that automatically read license plate numbers, was secretly sharing information with federal immigration agencies. In Illinois, an investigation uncovered the contract between the company and the federal government, leading the city of Evanston to end its contract with Flock. The company then announced it would pause its operations with federal immigration agencies and reevaluate, stating that they "communicated poorly." In other news, the City of Los Angeles has mandated that the Los Angeles Port Police Force, which patrols the Los Angeles port and surrounding areas 24 hours a day, serve as a kind of legal observer of federal immigration officials. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to mandate that Port police officers "document and collect data on federal immigration enforcement activity in the Harbor Area, with the goal of presenting the data in court as proof of the violation of people's rights when necessary.
