Last week, journalist Robert Inkalesh said Google deleted his account data including all his reporting documenting Israeli human rights abuses. He wrote on the X platform: "All my coverage of Israeli soldiers shooting civilians, including children, along with my entire account were deleted and then I was banned completely." In June, Drop Site News reported that Google had signed a $45 million contract with the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu. Videos from the Israeli government, pushed through the algorithm and shown to millions of users, deny Isareli genocide, starvation, and other human rights abuses. Accounts reporting on these abuses, in turn, are banned or have their content deleted. The contract is part of a three-part propaganda campaign by Israel. The first part involved Netanyahu being interview by popular YoutTubers and podcasters, and providing the interviewers with the questions to be asked. The second is the contracts with Google. The third part involves paying dozens of popular influencers on a paid propaganda trip to Israel.
The Trump administration has blocked States from issuing full food assistance benefits for the month of November. During the last few days of the longest government shutdown in history, the Trump administration has been a legal battle with States to prevent them from issuing food assistance from the SNAP program, because withholding benefits gives the Republican Party leverage in its negotiation in the government shutdown. As airports are unable to operate and people are going hungry due to the shutdown, The Trump administration has had success in publicly placing the blame on the Democrats, even as it sues the in courts to block the benefits. Previously, a federal judge in Rhode Island had issued an order to States to provide 65% of SNAP benefits, which is what the Trump administration said it could afford. But several States including Rhode Island have since defied the order and provided the full amount of food assistance. At the time of this writing on November 10th, the government shutdown is expected to end soon but is still being negotiated.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the Exxon oil company funded US-based organizations that sought to discredit climate science, assure the public that it was safe to burn fossil fuels, and block US participation in international climate treaties. The news organizations The Guardian and DeSmog have published an investigative report uncovering payments from Exxon to The Atlas Network, a group of 500 pro-capitalist think tanks that sabotaged support for international climate treaties across the Global South. These treaties would presumably result in limiting the consumption of fossil fuels and therefore affect profits of the oil company. The Atlas Network, funded by Exxon, published false research to try to convince poor countries that entering into treaties that slowed the effects of climate change would hurt those poor countries disproportionately. The opposite is true; statistics show that poor countries suffer the worst consequences of climate change. According to the report, Exxon and the Atlas Network took advantage of tensions between countries to raise economic fears that persist to this day.
ICE is considering hiring private investigators to locate immigrants across the country, according to a document procured by The Intercept. The government document solicits information from companies interested in applying for the contract. Companies hired by ICE will be given bundles of information on 10,000 immigrants at a time to locate, with further assignments provided in increments of 10,000 up to 1,000,000. ICE will provide incentive for the companies to receive monetary bonuses. For example, ICE says contractors might get paid a bonus for finding 90 percent of its targets within a set timeframe, or for identifying a person's correct address on their first try. ICE will provide information such as location data, social media profiles, and photos and documents showing where a person lives or works. With this in hand, contractors will surveil their target to confirm the accuracy of their home address and report back to ICE. The document says that the home of the person that the bounty hunters are looking for will be the priority of the investigation, but if needed, they will also surveil the person's workplace.
After faking her own suicide, the former top lawyer of the Israeli military has been arrested for her role in the leak of surveillance video that showed Israeli soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian prisoner. In July of 2024, nine Israeli soldiers were arrested for beating and raping a Palestinian detainee in Sde Teiman prison, the administration of which is known for its torture of prisoners. Israeli politicians incited a riot outside of the prison, protesting the fact that the soldiers were arrested. The following month, video footage of the incident was leaked to the media, resulting in 5 of the soldiers receiving jail time. An investigation was launched to determine who leaked the footage. In October, the Israeli military's top lawyer, Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, became a suspect in the leaking case, and resigned. On Sunday, Tomer-Yerushalmi went missing for several hours, leaving behind a suicide note. However, she was found the next day, and arrested on suspicion of attempting to fake her own suicide in order to destroy her phone and the incriminating evidence on it.
Videos on social media show masked federal agents pointing their phones at people who refuse to present an ID, implying that their phones have the capability of identifying the immigration status of people based on their face. In one video published by 404 Media, a Border Patrol agent confronts a teenager in Chicago and says, "Man, if you just tell me you were born here and give me an ID, you'll be good." The teenager says, "I was born here, but I don't got ID." The agent then says to another agent, "Can you do facial?" The second officer then approaches the boy, gets him to turn around to face the sun, and points his own phone camera directly at him, hovering it over the boy's face for a couple seconds. The officer then looks at his phone's screen and asks the boy to verify his name. It's not clear what app the agents are using. Previously, federal agents were known to have been using Mobile Fortify, an app built on a database of 200 million images, which can return the subject's name, date of birth, their so-called "alien number," and whether they've been given an order of deportation.
The Guardian has published a report exposing a secret and probably illegal agreement between Israel, Google, Amazon. Israel has one of the largest and most comprehensive intelligence and surveillance programs in the world. In 2021, Google and Amazon entered into a $2.1 billion contract with Israeli that would allow it to store its mass surveillance data, such as secretly recorded phone calls, on Google and Amazon's commercial computer servers. On Wednesday, The Guardian reported that the contract, called Project Nimbus, included a secret agreement between the three organizations that would inform Israel if a law enforcement agency, or international human rights agency, wanted information about Israel's surveillance programs. Google and Amazon routinely share information with investigative agencies when requested, and do not inform the target of the investigation. This newly exposed agreement uses codes to secretly inform Israel of who is requesting information about them. The codes are exact amounts of small money transfers to Israel, each amount signifying a different hidden message. Amazon and Google deny the accusations.
China has implemented a new law that requires social media users to have professional training or other credentials in order to speak about matters such as law, medicine, science, finance and education. Due to the problem of misinformation, the Cyberspace Administration of China will require social media platforms such as Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and Kuaishou to collect proof of the qualifications of users who speak about these types of issues, for example, those who give medical, financial or legal advice. Control of information is a priority for the Chinese government, which has outlawed American social media platforms out of fear that they will be used for espionage by the US government. In this US, social media platforms have become heavily censored in the past year, especially regarding information about Israel and its genocide in Gaza. Israel funds social media campaigns powered by artificial intelligence to spread Israeli propaganda and challenge, or attempt to remove, pro-Palestinian users from the platforms. The current manager of hate speech moderation for TikTok is a former Israeli soldier.
Many of the deceased Palestinian bodies that Israel has returned to Palestine as part of the ceasefire agreement show signs of torture and mutilation. Since October 14, the Gaza Health Ministry has received the bodies of over 195 deceased Palestinian prisoners. The majority of the bodies show clear signs of torture, the Ministry says, including bullet holes fired from point-blank range, bruises, and signs of mutilation. Several bodies were received with their hands tied behind their backs, and with blindfolds over their eyes. The Health Ministry also said that several bodies showed signs of strangulation from hangings, with ropes found tied around the bodies' necks, while others bore marks of tank tracks. Other bodies were found with missing organs. Families whose loved ones had been missing gathered at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis for any information about the identities of the bodies. They sat in a large room and watched as health authorities displayed pictures of the bodies, most of them disfigured and mutilated, trying to find any identifying features of their loved ones.
On Tuesday, ICE agents accidentally shot a deputy U.S. marshal while trying to shoot at a TikTok user. The federal officers used a targeted traffic stop to arrest Carlitos Ricardo Parias, known as Richard LA on TikTok, where he has over 100,000 followers and works as a citizen journalist documenting ICE operations. Similar to a recent shooting in Chicago, the arrest began with ICE agents using their vehicles to block the vehicle of the person they were looking for, a maneuver that is not part of standard procedure. The report from ICE claims that Parias then tried to use his vehicle as a weapon, which, also like the Chicago incident, is disputed by eye witnesses. The report claims that Parias tried to drive away, and the evidence provided for this is that the wheels of his car produced smoke. However, witnesses say that the smoke came from tear gas fired by the officers. The agent then broke the window of the vehicle and began shooting, striking Parias in the elbow. One of the bullets bounced off of a surface and struck a US Marshall in the hand. Parias has been charged with assault on a federal officer.
