CNN has published a list of President Trump's 25 biggest lies of the year. For example, In many speeches this year, Trump said that he had secured 17 trillion dollars in investments for the US. The White House's own website cites the number as being less than 10 trillion. Many of these investments are due to tariffs, which may cause more damage to the economy by raising prices on consumers, and some have been called bribes by experts. Trump claimed that he had bought down the prices of groceries and other products, which is false, but polls show that even his supporters do not believe this lie. Trump said that foreign countries pay his tariffs, which are paid either by the consumer or the company that ships the product. Trump contradicted himself by telling an interviewer that he was lowering the price that Americans pay for coffee by lowering his tariffs on coffee. Trump said repeatedly that "Portland was burning down," before sending federal agents to take over the city. The President seemed to be convinced that most of the city was actually on fire due to riots. In reality, there were no riots and nothing was on fire in Portland.
On Wednesday, a federal judge in San Francisco banned one of the Trump administration's most controversial deportation tactics: arresting people at immigration courthouses across Northern California. The ruling blocks ICE and the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review from lying in wait for asylum seekers and other noncitizens at routine hearings. The current decision only applies to ICE's San Francisco Area of Responsibility, a region encompassing all of Northern and Central California, as far south as Bakersfield. Before the Trump administration's current attack on immigrants, authorities have had restrictions on carrying out arrests at what they called "sensitive locations," such as hospitals, churches and schools. The Trump administration's reversal of that tradition has lead to a surge in arrests, and a significant drop in court appearances. The administration is likely to appeal the decision. Until further court proceedings it is unclear whether immigrants are safe at courthouses.
On Sunday, CBS News abruptly canceled a segment from an episode of 60 Minutes just three hours before broadcast. The segment centered on the stories of Venezuelan immigrants sent to El Salvador's brutal CECOT prison by the Trump administration. Earlier this year, President Trump sued CBS News for the way it edited an interview with Kamala Harris. The company settled for 16 million dollars plus millions more in ads, or, presumably, pro-Trump propaganda. During the course of the lawsuit, CBS News merged with Paramount, owned by David Ellison, son of right-wing multimillionaire and owner of Oracle corporation, Larry Ellison. As part of the deal, CBS News had to agree to a "bias monitor" who reports directly to the President. In the past, bias monitors have only been used to protect journalists from the influence of their corporate bosses. The cancelled segment did air in Canada, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said that every 60 Minutes producer should be fired.
A jury has acquitted a man who was arrested by ICE for towing an agent's vehicle because it was parked illegally. In Los Angeles, tow truck driver Bobby Nuñez faced 10 years in prison after being arrested by ICE for towing their vehicle during the chaotic arrest of TikTok influencer Tatiana Mafla-Martinez earlier this year. ICE had parked their vehicle in the driveway of an apartment complex in order to prevent Mafla-Martinez from leaving. When the agents were distracted, Nuñez towed the vehicle one block away to remove it from the driveway. The vehicle was returned to ICE within 13 minutes, but he was charged with theft of federal property. After the jury determined that Nuñez was not guilty, the government's prosecuting attorney Bill Essayli said via social media, "The jury may have acquitted him, but guess what Bobby wasn't doing the last few months while awaiting trial: obstructing our ICE agents. (…) We stand behind the charges and would file them again if he engages in the same conduct," implying that ICE would arrest and charge someone for doing something that they knew was not illegal.
The Guardian has revealed a US government document that is being presented to unaccompanied children who arrive at the border, which encourages the children to self-deport, even if going back to their country would make them unsafe. The document is read to children within the first few days of them entering the US while they are still in the custody of Customs and Border Protection, before they can see any relatives in the US. It says: "If you choose to seek a hearing with an immigration judge or indicate a fear of returning to your country you can expect the following: you will be detained in the custody of the US Government for a prolonged period of time." It also says that the child's sponsor may be arrested and deported if they do not have legal status, or prosecuted "or aiding the child's entry, and adds that if the child turns 18 in government custody they will be turned over to ICE for deportation. The document also tells the child that there will be "no administrative consequences" for self-deporting, and that they may be able to apply for a visa later if they do so. However, this is misleading, as a path to legal status after deportation is almost impossible.
A set of bizarre coincidences, conspiracy theories, and mysterious circumstances surrounds one of the survivors of the mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia earlier this week. Arsen Ostrovsky, one of the most high-profile pro-Israeli human rights lawyers in the world, was one of the survivors of the attack. In what seems like an almost impossible coincidence, Ostrovsky was also a survivor of the October 7th, 2023 attacks against Israel. After a bullet grazed his head at Bondi Beach, Ostrovsky took time to post a photo of himself on social media. He also took time to do an interview with the media while covered in blood. To add to the mystery and confusion, a viral image on social media depicts Ostrovsky having fake blood applied to his head by an artist, implying that he was merely acting, but it was eventually determined that this image was generated by AI. In his actual photo he posted during the shooting, Ostrovsky is seen with blood covering his face and with a bandage on his head. Many medical professionals have pointed out that it is standard procedure to clean the blood from the patient before applying bandages.
In the past week, the mainstream media ignored several important stories. Common Dreams reported that Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of the Palantir corporation which provides mass surveillance and spying technology to the US government, said that society ought to return to "more masculine leadership," and called for "public hangings." Middle East Eye has revealed that Israel used Palantir for its 2024 pager attacks in Lebanon. The Guardian has revealed that the "VeriWatch" smartwatches that ICE forces detained immigrants to wear for surveillance purposes are causing dangerous delays in medical procedures, especially during births or c-sections when there must be no metal objects on the patient, and ICE refuses to remove the device. The Real News Network reports that CNN has partnered with Kalshi, a mobile app used for betting. CNN will display betting information during its coverage, allowing viewers to gamble on the outcome of world events, including issues like starvation in Gaza. Kalshi's two biggest investors, Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, are also investors in Israel.
Hundreds of people are in isolation or quarantine amid a rapidly spreading measles outbreak in South Carolina. The infections are concentrated in the northwestern Upstate region, which has lower rates of vaccination that the rest of the state. So far, 111 measles cases have been recorded, with 105 of them occuring in unvaccinated people. Arizona and Utah are also experiencing a significant measles outbreak. Nationally, there have been almost 2,000 measles cases recorded in the United States this year, causing at least three deaths. The U.S. declared measles eliminated in the year 2000, but the disease has returned after vaccination rates fell during the COVID pandemic. In South Carolina, officials say that schools, churches, and family gatherings during Thanksgiving all contributed to the outbreak. At least 16 cases were specifically traced back to the Way of Truth Church in Inman. Given the ongoing transmissions and the low vaccination rate, experts such as Linda Bell, state epidemiologist for the Department of Public Health, believe that the spread in South Carolina will continue for many more weeks.
A former high-level agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and a former CIA agent have been charged with conspiring to launder millions of dollars and obtain military-grade firearms and explosives for the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel. Prosecutors say that Paul Campo, who retired from the DEA in 2016 after a 25-year career, and Robert Sensi, an infamous ex-CIA agent charged with theft and fraud in the 1980s and 90s, were caught in a sting involving a police informant who posed as a member of the Jalisco Nueva Generación. Over the past year, Campo and Sensi, thinking they were dealing with the Cartel, agreed to launder $12 million in drug money, and paid for 220 kilograms of cocaine they were told would sell in the U.S. for $5 million. They said they would try to procure commercial drones, AR-15 rifles, M4 carbines, grenade launchers and rocket-propelled grenades for the cartel. In the past decade alone, dozens of DEA agents have been charged with federal crimes including child pornography, drug trafficking, leaking intelligence, and selling firearms to cartels.
On Thursday, immigrants in Boston who had finished the process of becoming US citizens, and who were moments away from being sworn, were told by immigration officials that their oath ceremony was cancelled due to President Trump's ban on immigrants from certain countries. US Citizenship and Immigration Services, or USCIS, has directed its employees to halt all immigration applications for people from the 19 mostly African and Asian countries that President Donald Trump has designated as "high-risk." Kristi Noem, Chief of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said, "I am recommending a full travel ban on every damn country that's been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies. Our forefathers built this nation on blood, sweat, and the unyielding love of freedom - not for foreign invaders." A DHS spokesperson said that they are "making every effort to ensure individuals becoming citizens are the best of the best. Citizenship is a privilege, not a right. We will take no chances when the future of our nation is at stake."
