In a rare public disagreement, Republicans in congress are divided regarding the killing of survivors of a US bombing of a Venezuelan boat. Since September, the US has killed 87 people in 22 bombing strikes on fishing boats in the Caribbean, claiming that they are carrying drugs, but providing no evidence for the claims. A video from a strike on September 2nd shows that after 2 people survived and tried to stay afloat by hanging on to the boat's debris, the US military bombed the survivors, which constitutes a war crime. Last week, the Washington Post reported that War Secretary Peter Hegseth had said simply, "kill them all," when asked about what to do with the survivors. Republicans are united in their view that no evidence is needed to bomb fishing boats, and in that the appropriate response to a suspected drug dealer is to bomb them, but there is disagreement on the legality and ethics of the so-called 'double tap,' wherein the target is bombed twice, in order to kill survivors and first responders.
The News Movement has published a documentary about two White teenagers from Chicago who spend hours every day following and filming ICE agents. As the Trump administration prepares a new wave of attacks on communities, this time in New Orleans, hundreds of residents are preparing by attending legal observation trainings. The brothers, Ben and Sam Luhmann, who are homeschooled and are trained as legal observers, spend five hours every morning following and filming ICE agents, like many activists do. However, their privilege as White middle-class teenagers gives them a unique opportunity to document ICE agents with less concern for their own safety. The documentary shows that, because, many of the arrests that ICE makes are illegal, the agents often simply leave the scene as soon as the brothers begin filming them. When the agents do make an arrest, the brothers try to get information about the person being arrested so that a lawyer can try to ensure ICE does not disappear them. They are repeatedly verbally and physically threatened by the ICE agents, but they are never arrested.
In Germany, over 25,000 protesters blockaded streets and fought with police in order to interrupt a meeting of a White supremacist political party. The purpose of the conference, held on Saturday in Giessen, was for the Alternative for Germany Party, or AfD, to establish its new youth wing, called Generation Germany. AfD is a far right-wing, anti-immigrant party that received the second-most votes in the last national elections, and is endorsed by Elon Musk. Previously, the AfD's youth wing was called Young Alternative for Germany, and was partly autonomous and self-organized, but the party officially cut ties with the group after the government classified them as as an extremist organization. In an effort to establish a new youth wing fully under their control, the AtP leadership established Generation Germany at the conference in Giessen. 1,000 party leaders were expected to attend, but only about 300 were at the event, as thousands of protesters blocked roads and fought with police and AfD supporters.
More information has surfaced about 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who shot two National Guard members in Washington, DC, one of whom was killed. Lakanwal had been CIA agent in Afghanistan since 2011 and was given US residency ten years later to protect him from persecution from the Taliban, who took over the country after the US's failure to install any sort of stable authority in the region. Lakanwal passed several immigration background checks to maintain his status in the US, the most recent of which was carried out by the Trump administration in April of this year. However, this didn't stop President Trump from blaming former President Biden for the shootings. When asked about this in a press conference, Trump responded to the reporter, "Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person? Because they came in on a plane along with thousands of other people that shouldn't be here, and you're just asking questions because you're a stupid person." The Trump administration has ordered further crackdowns on immigration, and has sent 500 more National Guard soldiers to Washington D.C. since the shooting.
Last week, 86 Democrats and 199 Republicans in the House of Representatives voted yes on a resolution to condemn socialism because New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani was scheduled to meet with President Trump in the White House. Mamdani ran a campaign on the promise of making New York City more affordable for working class people, by imposing a 2% income tax on every millionaire in the city and using the money to support initiative such as free transportation and affordable housing. The House of Representatives resolution, written by Florida Republican Maria Elvira Salazar, whose parents were Cuban exiles, says that Socialism has "only delivered fear, censorship, poverty, and broken nations," and that "The Mamdani socialist agenda is seeping into our country like poison." Meanwhile, President Trump and Mamdani had an amicable meeting during which Trump seemed to praise Mamdani and agree that they have a common goal of making New York City affordable. 13 California Democrats voted in favor of the resolution.
11-21-25 ICE, IMMIGRATION
This week, residents of various North Carolina cities resisted against harassment and kidnappings by federal agents, as the Trump administration aims its latest attacks at immigrant communities in that state. In a viral social media video from Charlotte, an elderly White woman notices two immigration agents getting out of their cars in front of her house and approaching her Latino workers. She then confronts them, carrying a gun, and the agents get back in their car and leave. In another video, protesters confront federal agents and, using a loudspeaker, play recorded audio of the screams of victims of ICE agents. In Raleigh, hundreds of protesters had organized marches within hours of ICE arriving in their city. In the middle of the night, activists slashed the tires of several ICE vehicles that were parked at a hotel. Thousands of young students have skipped school for several days and have been marching in protest. A grocery store, Compare Foods, announced it would be offering free delivery to keep people from having to leave their house while federal agents are in the city.
On Tuesday, after a week of avoiding journalists due to their questions about his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, President Trump threatened to revoke the broadcast license of ABC News because he didn't like the attitude of a reporter. During a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House, ABC News correspondent Mary Bruce asked Trump, "Mr President, why wait for Congress to release the Epstein files? Why not just do it now?" Trump replied, "You know, it's not the question that I mind. It's your attitude. I think you are a terrible reporter. It's the way you ask these questions. (…) I think the license should be taken away from ABC, because your news is so fake, and it's so wrong." In 2017, Dr. Bandy Lee, forensic psychiatrist at the Yale School of Medicine, compiled a book of essays from 27 mental health professionals warning of the dangers of Trump's mental state with respect to his role as a world leader. The World Mental Health Coalition has published several reports which have observed, although have not been able to diagnose, symptoms of pathological narcissism in Trump.
The Trump administration has expanded its federal attacks on Democrat-led cities to Charlotte, North Carolina, where agents arrested over 80 people. Governor Josh Stein said, "We've seen masked, heavily armed agents in paramilitary garb driving unmarked cars, targeting American citizens based on their skin color, racially profiling and picking up random people in parking lots and off of our sidewalks." Although the city has seen a 20% reduction in violent crime in the past year, Charlotte was targeted by the Trump administration due to its large immigrant population and democratic governor. It's also likely that Charlotte was targeted due to the killing of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year old Ukrainian immigrant who was killed by a homeless black man on a subway. Due to the backgrounds of the people involved, the incident became a propaganda tool for the far right. President Trump referred to the killer as an animal who should get the death penalty, and referred to Zarutska as a "beautiful young lady who came to America searching for peace and safety."
Earlier this week, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights released a report based on thousands of interviews with Palestinian detainees who have been released from Israeli prisons as a result of recent ceasefire negotiations. The report concludes that Israel is "operating an organized and systematic practice of sexual torture" against Palestinian prisoners from Gaza in its custody. The detainees gave accounts of rape, filming of abuse, and psychological humiliation. An 18-year-old released detainee said, "They violated our dignity and destroyed our spirits and our hope for life. I had wanted to continue my education; now I am lost after what happened to me." At least 1,000 Palestinians from Gaza are still being held under the same conditions, with many more in prisons and military camps sealed off from international monitors. Without another event that forces negotiations, these prisoners are likely to remain there for the rest of their lives with no contact to the outside world. A recent investigation by The Guardian found that one of these prisons is holding dozens of detainees in total isolation in an underground jail.
Last week, journalist Robert Inkalesh said Google deleted his account data including all his reporting documenting Israeli human rights abuses. He wrote on the X platform: "All my coverage of Israeli soldiers shooting civilians, including children, along with my entire account were deleted and then I was banned completely." In June, Drop Site News reported that Google had signed a $45 million contract with the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu. Videos from the Israeli government, pushed through the algorithm and shown to millions of users, deny Isareli genocide, starvation, and other human rights abuses. Accounts reporting on these abuses, in turn, are banned or have their content deleted. The contract is part of a three-part propaganda campaign by Israel. The first part involved Netanyahu being interview by popular YoutTubers and podcasters, and providing the interviewers with the questions to be asked. The second is the contracts with Google. The third part involves paying dozens of popular influencers on a paid propaganda trip to Israel.
