Atlas Shrugged (published 1957) is Ayn Rand's magnum opus, a 1,200-page novel which details her philosophy of objectivism using characters like a pirate who hates income tax, a railroad magnate who is turned on by rationality, a superhero banker who loves the gold standard, a playboy billionaire who shoots unionists and, most importantly, dollar-sign-branded cigarettes.

Want to find out where the word 'sadism' comes from? The Marquis de Sade was a French sex maniac who, in 1785 began work on The 120 Days of Sodom while imprisoned in the Bastille. The work remains unfinished, and only found a publisher in 1904, repeatedly rejected because of its graphic depictions of paedophilia, necrophilia, rape of every variety, torture and murder.

The Nation of Islam, despite its name, might not be the most Islamic organisation in the world. Elijah Muhammad, one of the Nation of Islam's leaders, collected the conversations he had with Fard Muhammad, the organisation's founder and self-proclaimed embodiment of Allah.
One of the fruits of his labour was Yakub: The Father of Mankind, published in 2002. The subject of this book? The origin of the white race. Turns out, black people are gods, Allah is only one in a long line of gods (and has probably died) and white people are the result of a centuries-long selective breeding program to make the most degenerated humans possible. Islam indeed!

Sun and Steel is the best metaphysical justification for bodybuilding. There's nothing else that comes close. Written by Yukio Mishima and published in 1968, it details Mishima's transition from a weak-bodied explorer of his own internal world, to a de-individuated beautiful body. Two years after publication, Mishima launched an abortive coup in his native Japan, committing seppuku upon its failure.

American Psycho: chances are, you've seen the film and know plenty of Patrick Bateman quotes. But have you read the book? Published in 1991 and written by Bret Easton Ellis, this novel is an extremely funny satire of modern consumerism, as well as being stomach-churningly disgusting in many places. Levi sat this episode out, and Ed stepped in to fill his shoes. As Ed has watched the American Psycho film at least 30 times, he was definitely in his element.

Alexander Dugin is a Russian political philosopher who may or may not have President Vladimir Putin's ear. A longtime advocate for invading Ukraine, Dugin's book 'The Fourth Political Theory' (2009) offers a Heideggerian framework for developing an alternative political theory to liberalism, one in which American global hegemony will be undermined, Dasein will become the historical subject, multilateralism will allow Russia an expanded sphere of influence and we will avoid the inevitable fate of liberals - becoming cyborgs (this is not a metaphor).
