  • "KISS In The 1970s"/Peter Gallagher [Episode 105]
Peter Gallagher is back on the podcast. Last time we had him on to talk about his book Warren Zevon: Every Album, Every Song. This time he’s here to talk about his latest book Kiss in the 1970s.

Peter takes us on a journey through KISS’s most eventful decade. In the early days, the band was just about done. Poor album reviews, some merited due to poor production, some underserved. With their record company against the wall and their manager’s money drained, KISS seemed destined to become one of the “lost” bands of the 70s. But, by the end of the decade, they were the biggest band in the world. Or, as they became famously known – "The Hottest Band In The World!"

The music, the costumes, the concerts, the merchandise, the comic books, the TV appearances and the so bad it’s good ’78 film Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Peter is here to tell us all about it in part one of a two-part interview. In part two we the 14 albums released during that original era of the band with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. That includes the studio albums, the live albums and the four solo albums. That episode is coming soon!

  • "Rock N Roll Will Only Break Your Heart"/Kenward Cooper [Episode 102]
Most music memoirs and autobiographies are about the artist paying their dues and then reaching the big time. In “Rock N Roll Will Only Break Your Heart”, there is no "big time" for the author. Instead, it's about getting from point A to point B while still trying to find point C. And you know what? The ride is just as colorful without the platinum records.

Kenward Cooper tells his story in a heartfelt way, while also finding humor in his struggles and misfortunes, tracing the time when he was at the cusp of the Las Vegas music scene, just before the success of the Killers, Panic! at the Disco, and Imagine Dragons, and the grief of his marriage ending after a romantic rivalry involving a member of one of the aforementioned bands.

From journalism to songwriting, performing, and screenwriting, Kenward takes on many endeavors - all with the same goal of trying to make his mark. He travels from coast to coast and internationally in a never-ending pursuit of dreams. Rock n roll will only break your heart. But it will put a smile on your face while it does it.

Kenward Cooper is a man of many passions. Music will always be number one. He’s been a ghostwriter on a hit song and has licensed his music for television. With an urge to tell stories in another creative form, he immersed himself in the craft of writing screenplays. “Rock N Roll Will Only Break Your Heart” is another extension of his writing and his first book.

  • "Anatomy of 55 More Songs: The Oral History of 55 Hits That Changed Rock, R&B, and Soul"/Marc Myers [Episode 100]
Following his 2016 smash hit “Anatomy of a Song”, acclaimed music journalist Marc Myers has collected fifty-five new oral histories of iconic songs from his popular Wall Street Journal column.

Songs that sell the most copies become hits, but some of those hits become something more—iconic recordings that not only inspire a generation but also change the direction of music. In “Anatomy of 55 More Songs”, based on his column for the Wall Street Journal, music journalist and historian Marc Myers tells the story behind fifty-five rock, pop, R&B, country, and soul-gospel hits through intimate interviews with the artists who wrote and recorded them.

Part oral history, part musical analysis, “Anatomy of 55 More Songs” ranges from Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising” to Dionne Warwick’s “Walk On By,” The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid.” Bernie Taupin recalls how he wrote the lyrics to Elton John’s “Rocket Man;” Joan Jett remembers channeling her rage against how she had been unfairly labeled and treated as a female rocker into “Bad Reputation;” and Ozzy Osbourne, Elvis Costello, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Alice Cooper, Roberta Flack, John Mellencamp, Keith Richards, Carly Simon, and many others reveal the emotions and technique behind their major works.

Through an absorbing chronological, song-by-song analysis of the most memorable post-war hits, “Anatomy of 55 More Songs” provides a sweeping look at the evolution of pop music between 1964 and today. This book will change how you listen to music and evaluate the artists who create it.

Marc Myers is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal, where he writes about music and the arts. He is the author of the critically acclaimed books “Anatomy of a Song”, “Why Jazz Happened”, and “Rock Concert”. You can hear Mark talk about that book in episode 31 of Booked On Rock. Marc also posts daily at JazzWax.com, a three-time winner of the Jazz Journalists Association’s award for Jazz Blog of the Year.

  • "The Jordanaires: The Story of the World's Greatest Backup Vocal Group"/Michael Kosser & Alan Stoker [Episode 99]
As told by the late great lead tenor Gordon Stoker, this is the story of the greatest backup group in the history of recorded music and that is undoubtedly the Jordanaires, a gospel group of mostly Tennessee boys, formed in the 1940s, that set the standard for studio vocal groups in the '50s, '60s, '70s, and beyond. In their sixty-five-year career, from 1948 through 2013, the recordings they sang on have sold an estimated eight billion copies. They sang on more than 200 of Elvis's recordings, including most of his biggest hits. They were in three of his best-known movies, appeared with him on most of his early nation-wide TV shows, and toured with him for many years.

Throughout Elvis's early career, the Jordanaires were his most trusted friends and probably his most positive influence. While the Jordanaires' bread and butter may have been Nashville's burgeoning recording industry, it seemed that there was always a plane waiting to take them cross country to the pop sessions in L.A. They sang on most of Ricky Nelson's biggest hits and over the years backed up Andy Williams, Fats Domino, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Dinah Shore, The Everly Brothers, Glen Campbell, Patti Page, Neil Young, Perry Como, Loretta Lynn, Ringo Starr, Tom Jones, Andy Griffith, Bobby Vinton, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Billy Ray Cyrus, Clyde McPhatter, and about 2,100 other recording acts.

Michael Kosser is a senior editor at American Songwriter magazine, where he has written a column on songwriting called "Street Smarts" for the past twenty years. Since 1979, Kosser's songs have been recorded by George Jones, Barbara Mandrell, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, and others. Many of his songs have appeared on the national country music charts. Kosser offers an in-depth, insider's view of Nashville during its ascendancy in his book “How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A.: Fifty Years of Music Row”.

Alan Stoker is the son of Gordon Stoker, of the Jordanaires quartet. He’s a Grammy-winning audio engineer, a musician, vocalist, and a music historian. As a musician/vocalist, he’s backed up beach music legend Clifford Curry and Sam Moore of the Stax Records duo Sam and Dave. He’s also recorded with prog-rock group McKendree Spring and E Street Band bassist Gary Tallent. He’s opened shows for Ray Charles and his orchestra, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon band, the Tams, Crystal Gayle, and others.

He’s the long-time legendary archivist for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN. He’s preserved some of the earliest recordings of the biggest names in music. Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash are just a few of the artists whose recordings Stoker has been involved with. His work is credited on close to one hundred commercially released products, including “Hank Williams Mother’s Best Flour Show”, “The Patsy Cline Collection”, “The Bristol Sessions: Historic Recordings from Bristol, Tennessee”, and the Grammy award–winning “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945–1970”.

Stoker has appeared in numerous documentaries as a music historian. He’s a twenty-year member of the National Recording Preservation Board at the Library of Congress.
