  • Recovery Bottom Lines Defined; Turn Negatives Into Positives

One of the most frequent questions I’m asked and see online is, “What’s considered a relapse in recovery?” To me, it’s a personal choice. I believe that each person’s recovery is their own to define. What may be a bottom line to me may not be a bottom line to someone else. A great tool to use is The Three Circles and the accompanying worksheet.

Raise your hand if you struggle with negative thoughts and emotions. Don’t worry—you’re not alone. We all do from time to time, and if we’re in recovery or healing, those negative thoughts and emotions can be pretty persistent. We can rewire them toward positive thinking, feelings, and behaviors. The more we push our brains in that direction, the more they will go that way on their own. Learn how to use my Meet It, Greet It, and Transform It technique.

  • Steps to Take After A Setback in Sobriety

For most people, setbacks are a part of the addiction recovery journey. That doesn't mean every single person will experience them, but many will. When they happen, the important thing to do is pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and learn from them. The last thing we want is to wrap ourselves up in a blanket of shame. That’s why want to focus on the steps to take after a setback, versus the setback itself.

  • Addiction, Family of Origin & Lifestyle Choices

If our family and social circle cultivate closeness, trust, and warmth, we're more likely to do the same. If our FOO is isolated or gives us a sense of insecurity, we're more likely to keep others at a distance and arm's length.

Our family of origin can also shape our lifestyle choices. As children, we tend to mimic what we see around us. If our FOO tends to be active and socialize, we tend to do the same things as we get older. If our FOO smokes, drinks uses drugs, and isolates, we may gravitate towards that, too.

  • My Partner’s An Addict: Should I Stay?

I'll ask thought-provoking questions in this episode to help you think things through. Not all couples can make it through addiction, and that’s understandable. It’s no one’s fault. The critical thing to remember is to take care of yourself and your needs and only stay together if you’re both in a healthy recovery and can maintain hope that things can improve. It’s not fixed overnight or cured in a few months. It’s a lifetime of commitment for both of you. Only stay if you commit to that kind of recovery, healing, and understanding. That doesn’t mean addiction will consume every moment of your day. But, in the beginning, it feels all-consuming. But it won't stay that way.

  • Addiction: What Does A Healthy Recovery Look Like?

This insightful podcast is for those struggling and their loved ones. Learn the signs of a healthy recovery and a cool check-in tool. Recovery and healing are unique journeys, often marked by emotional and physical setbacks. They aren’t linear, with peaks and valleys that shape growth.

The person struggling defines what sobriety looks like for them. I described mine in the Three Circles post. It may change and evolve over time, but the only person who can define it is the person experiencing it.
