In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Vanessa Brantley-Newton, an illustrator, author and speaker specializing in children's books. Vanessa and I dive deep into her journey to entrepreneurship. We discuss the various challenges she has faced in life from the loss of a child, a parent, and jobs. She shares how those experiences have shaped her and play a role in the person she has now become. She also attest to the fact that you are never to old to fulfill your purpose. 

As an illustrator, she includes children of all ethnic backgrounds in her stories and artwork. She wants all children to see their unique experiences reflected in the books they read, so they can feel the same sense of empowerment and recognition she experienced as a young reader.

Vanessa celebrates self-love and acceptance of all cultures through her work, and hopes to inspire young readers to find their own voices. An artist swathed in retro chic, she loves all things vintage – especially books and clothes from the 40s through the 60’s – and it shines through in her designs, which run the gamut of fun and whimsical to stylish and sophisticated. She loves to add unique touches to her work, including mixed media accents, collage, and hand lettering.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Glenne De Gonzague of NUD Beauty. She shares her story of how she started her business while in college pursuing a law degree. We talk about her challenges as an entrepreneur and what she has learned along the way. Glenne De Gonzague is a licensed cosmetologist specializing in natural hair care.

She was born in St. Lucia and raised in the United States. After deciding what area, she wanted to pursue her career in, she discovered her interest in Cosmetology. NUD Beauty was founded in 2016 through Glenne's college experiences. She noticed that there was a prominent struggle for students to take care of themselves. She later noticed that it wasn't only students, but a majority of the world battled with what it really means to practice self-care.

With her philosophy on self-care and her beliefs of the healing properties using natural remedies, it was important to her that she provided a natural alternative to everyday essentials.

In this episode, my special guest Akida Gray aka (my husband) shares his experience as the husband of an entrepreneur. In 2019, I left my full-time job to pursue entrepreneurship full time. Things did not necessarily go as planned (a lot of things) lol. Akida shares how we managed and how he as a spouse felt during those difficult times. 

This is our first time having this conversation, so it gets interesting. LOL I ask him questions and he gives genuine answers. It isn't always easy and anyone that says that it is.... I need their number. lol There is a lot of juggling, listening, understanding, trusting, and choosing to show up in supportive, encouraging ways. 

We've made it through, but we have had our fair share of disconnects and doubts. We hope that this conversation will help other couples either trying to navigate these uncertain grounds.
