The Arkansas  Senate advanced two identical bills that were amended today to reflect the federal "Religious Freedom Restoration Act."Gov. Asa Hutchinson, in a press conference this morning, called on legislative leaders to change the controversial HB 1228 to mirror the federal RFRA. President Obama recalled Edward M. Kennedy(the Lion of the Senate)’s powerful ability to forge compromise. Senator John McCain remembered arguing with him on the Senate floor, after which the Democrat warmly put his arm around him. And Elizabeth Warren spoke about her first meeting with the liberal lion, and how it changed her life.

Obama and a parade of other top officials, Democrat and Republican, descended on Dorchester Monday to dedicate the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. They paid tribute to Kennedy’s personal touch and ability to build coalitions in the chamber he loved, and they offered hope the future might be more like the past they fondly recalled.Boston Globe

Taking a page from the FBI’s COINTELPRO program of the 1960s, “intelligence analysts” from Mall of America in Bloomington, Minneapolis set up a fake Facebook account to identify and monitor local Black Lives Matter activists, who were later arrested and charged for a holiday protest at the mega mall.On December 11, as news of the planned Black Lives Matter protest began to spread, the “Nikki Larson” account was updated with a banner image of an (apocryphal) Martin Luther King Jr. quote: “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” At some point, the Larson account “liked” the Black Lives Matter Minneapolis Facebook group.Metadata from some of the documents lists the software that created them as belonging to “Sam Root” at the “Mall of America.” A Facebook account for a Sam Root lists his profession as “Intelligence Analyst at Mall of America.”  The Intercept

What Cruz offered in his announcement — what his candidacy is about — is a robust call to arms to tea partiers, evangelicals and people feeling cut out by the party establishments of both parties. Invoking God and the Constitution throughout his speech, he said, “I believe in you. I believe in the power of millions of courageous conservatives rising up to reignite the promise of America.”

In his relatively brief time as a national politician, Cruz has shown himself to be brainy, driven and ambitious. What he has yet to show is the ability to take his outsider message, convert it from criticism to optimism and expand his appeal beyond the true believers. He has made the argument about what his party needs. Now he must try to prove that he is the messenger conservatives want in 2016. Dan Balz WP
