  • Where Have All the Libraries Gone?
According to a report by the American Library Association and the Center for Library and Information Innovation at the University of Maryland, more than 25 million Americans reported using their public library more than 20 times in 2008, up from 20.3 million Americans in 2006. Particularly in the wake of the economic downturn, more and more Americans are turning to public libraries for such things as job hunting or to seek government services and continuing education.Library and information science degree-holders bring in $57,600 mid-career, on average. Common jobs for them are school librarian, library director and reference librarian, and there are expected to be just 8.5% more of them by 2020.
Last year, state funding was either cut or held constant in 34 state libraries across the U.S. Average salaries fell for directors and rookie librarians alike. And in 2011, there were 173 fewer public libraries than in 2001. Mona Chalabi and Andrew Flowers

"This day will always be hard, it will never be easy to be close to that place where our lives broke apart. You are strong at this broken place. Compassion took hold of this city, and it was “a mighty force. Our support and love for you will never waver, promised the victims. We will never forget what this day means to you.”Former Mayor Thomas Menino
"The city’s recovery during the past year was “an enduring example of the power of the common cause, indeed, the power of love itself, That’s what community is . . . and I am so proud to be a part of this one.”Governor Deval Patrick

  • The Unthinkable in Kansas City
A 73-year-old southwest Missouri man with a long history of anti-Semitism is suspected of killing two people outside Overland Park’s Jewish Community Center and then a third at a nearby Jewish assisted living facility.
After officers arrested Frazier Glenn Cross — an Aurora, Mo., man better known as F. Glenn Miller — Sunday afternoon, authorities said he went on a rant inside the patrol car. Though Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass wouldn’t say what Cross hollered, a television crew captured him on video while he was handcuffed in the back of the car.
“Heil Hitler,” Miller yelled out, and then he bobbed his head up and down.Kansas City Star

Dr Al Shaprton, Yes, I’m on the phone. I’ve been doing TV because today’s the opening day of the National Action Network’s convention and the dealing with this fabricated controversy of a 31 year old story. But we expect that every time we have our convention they try to come up with something. Particularly this year since President Obama is speaking Friday and the Attorney General is speaking today, but let me say this, Tom, with all this informant story
Federico “Fritzy” Giovanelli suggested that a reporter look at “the good side” of Sharpton instead of plumbing the reverend’s past. “I feel sorry for him,” Giovanelli laughed. “Here’s a guy who lost a hundred pounds and along comes a Bastone wielding a bastone to ruin things.” In Italian, a “bastone” is a wooden cane.

The Braves returned to Atlanta, and on April 8, 1974, a crowd of 53,775 people showed up for the game—a Braves attendance record. The game was also broadcast nationally on NBC. In the fourth inning, Aaron hit home run number 715 off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing. Although Dodgers outfielder Bill Buckner nearly went over the outfield wall trying to catch it, the ball landed in the Braves' bullpen, where relief pitcher Tom House caught it.Wikimedia

  • The Science Comprehension Thesis
The leading theory, Kahan and his coauthors wrote, is the Science Comprehension Thesis, which says the problem is that the public doesn’t know enough about science to judge the debate. It’s a version of the More Information Hypothesis: a smarter, better educated citizenry wouldn’t have all these problems reading the science and accepting its clear conclusion on climate change.
But Kahan and his team had an alternative hypothesis. Perhaps people aren’t held back by a lack of knowledge. After all, they don’t typically doubt the findings of oceanographers or the existence of other galaxies. Perhaps there are some kinds of debates where people don’t want to find the right answer so much as they want to win the argument. Perhaps humans reason for purposes other than finding the truth — purposes like increasing their standing in their community, or ensuring they don’t piss off the leaders of their tribe. If this hypothesis proved true, then a smarter, better-educated citizenry wouldn’t put an end to these disagreements. It would just mean the participants are better equipped to argue for their own side.VOX
Jerry Pippin brings the hypothesis to main street America.
